ModesofAssessment
Thestudentswillcompleteapreassessmentweeksbeforethestartoftheunittoallow
timetoreflecttheirabilitiesintheinstructionalplanning.Withintheunitstudentswillhavetwo
majorsummativeassessments.Thefirstisascreencastprojectthatemphasizestheimportanceof
theirdeepunderstandingoftheadditionrule.Thesecondassessmentisatraditionaltest.
Throughouttheunittherewillbecontinualevaluationofstudentsprogressthroughobservation,
homeworks,andthroughformativeassessment.Studentswillthereforebeassessedthrough
performancetasks,observations,writtentasks(homework),selfassessment,games,and
cooperativelearningactivities.
ScoringProcedures
Studentshomeworkwillberecordingasahabitsofwork(HOW)grade.Studentsare
awareofthisconvention.Itisalsoconventionthatthegradesstudentsreceiveforthisunitwill
notallbecontainedwithintheunit.Thestandardevaluationprocessbeginswithasummative
assessmentattheendoftheunit,withfurtherassessmentsplacedaftertheendoftheunitto
promotelongtermretention.Withinthisunit,studentswillhavetwosummativeassessments
thescreencastproject,andtheendofunittest.Studentswillbeawarethatthescreencast
projectwillbeweightedlessthantheunittestbecauseitaddresseslesscomponentsoftheunit
rubric.Theunitrubricwillclearlydescribewhatskillsstudentswillneedtodemonstratemastery
oftoreceiveaspecificscore.Thescreencastprojectwillbeaccompaniedbyachecklistand
rubric,makingexpectationsclear.
SelfAssessment
Studentswillselfassesstheirwork,promotingreflection,duringtheirscreencastproject.
Studentswillberequiredtoexaminetheirscreencastscripttoensureallthecomponentsthey
wishtoincludeareintheirscript.Atthatpoint,studentswillbeabletoeasilydeterminewhat
gradetheirscriptshouldreceive.Studentswillalsoselfassesstowardstheendoftheunitwhen
wetakeapracticetest.Thepracticetestiscreatedwiththeexplicitpurposeofstudents
identifyingtheirstrengthsandweaknessestoidentifysomethingtheyshouldfocusonin
preparationforthetest.
