Electronic Paper
For a thin and bendable display, Fabric PCs will rely on a cutting-edge technology called e-paper, or electronic paper. The
technology behind e-paper was pioneered in the 1970s by Nick Sheridan at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and has
continued to evolve since that time. Today there are several different implementations of the basic e-paper concept.

E-paper, based
on this type of design, can be curled or even folded like a sheet of
laminated paper, and because of its light weight and flexibility it's also much less fragile than traditional displays. Fujitsu's
Fabric PC concept designs take full advantage of these characteristics by incorporating large displays that can fold up to
fit within a Fabric PC's case when it is closed. The power requirements for e-paper displays are also much lower than for
traditional displays. For Fabric PC's, this will translate into longer battery life and/or smaller batteries.
Keep in mind that the Fabric PC is currently just a concept design and that even working prototypes have yet to be
developed. One of the factors that Fabric PC development will depend upon is continued progress in e-paper technology.
As exciting as e-paper is, it's important to stress that e-paper technology is still a work in progress, too. There are
considerable technical challenges that must be overcome before low-cost e-paper displays will be available. For example,
just one of those challenges will be the ability to display a full range of colors that can also update quickly enough to
accommodate video output. Bringing the cost of e-paper displays down to an affordable level will be especially important
as well.
What other technologies similar to the Fabric PC concept are in store for the near future? Keep reading to find out.
E-PAPER ON THE MARKET
Though e-paper is still a developing technology, you've probably already seen it in products available on the market today.
For example, many cell phones currently use e-paper display

Weve seen basic LED bulbs and smart bulbs that can change hue and brightness through a smartphone app. Both kinds
save energy but even the smart bulbs require human intervention in order to change their appearance. Now theres a
bulb that saves energy, adjusts its light intensity based on ambient room light, and adapts itself to your lifestyle. Stack
Lighting, a new company that includes engineers from NASA, Tesla, HP, and Google, recently entered the LED bulb
market with the Alba:
Alba is priced to compete with the Philips Hue, selling for $60 per bulb. An Alba starter kit with two bulbs and a hub sells
for $150. Unlike the Hue, the Alba is capable of making automatic adjustments based on time of day, ambient room light,
and a users programmed preferences.
Adaptable Plug-and-Play
Alba works right out of the box with a set of default settings for light levels, hues, and times. Using its app, a user can then
make adjustments according to ones lifestyle. At any time, the app can override default or programmed settings. Like
the Nest thermostat, the bulb can learn by tracking the users manual adjustments over time. In fact, Stack sees a future
where devices like the Alba and the Nest communicate with each other to create the perfect environment while saving
energy. That future has no light switches - just smart lights and apps. Im not sure Id want my entire house controlled
exclusively by a smartphone app; I think a centrally-located wall-mounted controller would be a good option.
The bulbs communicate through a Zigbee wireless mesh network. One hub is sufficient for 50,000 bulbs; the hub can talk
directly to the nearest bulbs, which can then relay information to other bulbs in the network. While 50,000 is overkill for a
home user, Stack has its eyes on the commercial market too.
Coming Soon
Stack Lighting plans to ship the first wave of Albas early in 2015. Alba is designed as a screw-in replacement BR30 flood
light, but the company is also working on bulbs for recessed lighting, A19 (round) bulbs, tubes to replace fluorescent
lights, and more.
Other smart lighting companies have come and gone. Philips has the advantage of being an established corporation with
deep pockets for R&D and marketing. Itll be interesting to see how well the Alba and its siblingsstack up against the
competition. I have a feeling that regardless of whether Stack Lighting survives as a company, its ideas will surely change
the lighting market.
The skin consists of passive and active solar elements, including a steel and glass three season porch whose windows can
be closed in the winter to create a greenhouse effect and opened in the summer to allow natural ventilation. The skin
makes year-round gardening a possibility in any climate. The steel skeleton is pretty much self-supporting, so the house
doesnt need to bear unreasonable structural loads. On the active side, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) produce
enough electricity to meet or exceed the homes requirements.
Photovoltaics
The BIPV system is a trade-off between letting in natural light and capturing enough sunlight to generate an adequate
amount of electricity. A combination of roof and window mounted monocrystalline PV panels provides up to 4.875 kW
while letting 35% of the sunlight into the interior. A PVSyst simulation estimates that the system will produce about 3.8
MWh each year. Of course, those estimates depend on the orientation of the original house as well as local shading effects.
My ballpark calculations suggest that the PVSyst estimate is based on an unshaded south-facing location, so the reported
numbers represent a best-case scenario.
Water
Almost one-third of all domestic water use goes right down the toilet - literally. To eliminate this waste, the house
incorporates a rainwater collection system thats used for toilet flushing. Low-flow faucets and showerheads also
contribute to water conservation.
Water is heated by a solar-thermal system thats installed under the PV panels, serving a dual purpose of cooling the
panels (increasing their efficiency) and heating water. The solar water heating meets up to 90% of the hot water
requirements; an air-sourced heat pump supplements the system in the winter.
One of the basics of passive heating and cooling is the use of a large thermal mass. This is difficult to do in a retrofit since
the structure already exists, so the designers included an under-the-floor box filled with a phase change material (PCM) to
store excess heat during the day and radiate it at night. In the summer, the excess heat can be ventilated through the
chimney, bypassing the heat exchanger.
1. Yume Neko Smile: the robo-cat
Seneng kucing tapi alergi sama bulu kucing ? Segatoys punya solusinya. The Yume Neko Smile (Senyum Kucing
The Yume Neko Smile tingginya 13 inci dan berat
4,5 pound.
& Intelligent Systems, BITS Pilani, India. AcYut artinya abadi atau
tak akan pernah gagal dalam bahasa sansekerta. Desain robot ini
memenangi medali perunggu untuk kategori Humanoid kelas menengah
pada perhelatan 2009 RoboGames di San Fransisco. Robot ini memiliki
keseimbangan yang luar biasa dan suka kungfu.
Mungkin keliatan sedikit menjijikkan, tapi robot-robot kecil ini ternyata bisa menarik kecoak-kecoak lainnya, berkumpul
tanpa terdeteksi bohongnya.
seperti kecoak sungguhan.
mengenali wajah (hingga 10 wajah).
mengikuti kesuksesan mainan AIBO sebelumnya. QRIO tingginya sekitar 60 cm dengan berat 7,3 kg. QRIO mampu
berlari. Generasi keempatnya memiliki baterai yang mampu bertahan hingga 1 jam. Programmernya membutuhkan
waktu tiga minggu untuk memprogram koreografinya.
