Electronic Paper

For a thin and bendable display, Fabric PCs will rely on a cutting-edge technology called e-paper, or electronic paper. The
technology behind e-paper was pioneered in the 1970s by Nick Sheridan at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and has
continued to evolve since that time. Today there are several different implementations of the basic e-paper concept.

example of e-paper technology is called E ink, made

by the E ink Corporation. We'll very briefly touch
here on how E Ink technology works, but to learn
much more about it, read How Electronic Ink Works.
Basically, this form of e-paper is created by
sandwiching millions of tiny plastic wells between two
sheets of flexible plastic. Each well contains both white
black particles, suspended within a clear fluid. The key
technology is that the white and black particles have
charges, so when an electric voltage is applied to
individual wells -- through circuitry embedded underneath
black and white particles can be separated to opposite

functions as a separate pixel on the E ink display.

E-paper, based
on this type of design, can be curled or even folded like a sheet of
laminated paper, and because of its light weight and flexibility it's also much less fragile than traditional displays. Fujitsu's
Fabric PC concept designs take full advantage of these characteristics by incorporating large displays that can fold up to
fit within a Fabric PC's case when it is closed. The power requirements for e-paper displays are also much lower than for
traditional displays. For Fabric PC's, this will translate into longer battery life and/or smaller batteries.
Keep in mind that the Fabric PC is currently just a concept design and that even working prototypes have yet to be
developed. One of the factors that Fabric PC development will depend upon is continued progress in e-paper technology.
As exciting as e-paper is, it's important to stress that e-paper technology is still a work in progress, too. There are
considerable technical challenges that must be overcome before low-cost e-paper displays will be available. For example,
just one of those challenges will be the ability to display a full range of colors that can also update quickly enough to
accommodate video output. Bringing the cost of e-paper displays down to an affordable level will be especially important
as well.
What other technologies similar to the Fabric PC concept are in store for the near future? Keep reading to find out.
E-PAPER ON THE MARKET

Though e-paper is still a developing technology, you've probably already seen it in products available on the market today.
For example, many cell phones currently use e-paper display

Smart Light Bulb Saves Energy as It Learns

Weve seen basic LED bulbs and smart bulbs that can change hue and brightness through a smartphone app. Both kinds
save energy but even the smart bulbs require human intervention in order to change their appearance. Now theres a
bulb that saves energy, adjusts its light intensity based on ambient room light, and adapts itself to your lifestyle. Stack
Lighting, a new company that includes engineers from NASA, Tesla, HP, and Google, recently entered the LED bulb
market with the Alba:
Alba is priced to compete with the Philips Hue, selling for $60 per bulb. An Alba starter kit with two bulbs and a hub sells
for $150. Unlike the Hue, the Alba is capable of making automatic adjustments based on time of day, ambient room light,
and a users programmed preferences.

Color Temperatures (Hues)

White light (also called cool or natural light) improves productivity and alertness. Its great for work and for reading.
Warm light (sometimes called soft light), which is closer to the yellow end of the spectrum, helps create a relaxing
ambience. Both have an effect on a persons circadian rhythms, sleep patterns, productivity, and overall well being. Alba
can adjust its hue based on the time of day and the users preferences.
The Alba doesnt provide the multi-colored disco light feature that the Hue offers; its strictly a cool-to-warm spectrum. I
think thats a pretty good tradeoff; they added more intelligence to the bulb, which of course costs more money, and to
offset that cost they eliminated a feature thats more for show than for regular use. (Having grown up in the 70s, I can
certainly live without disco lights.)

Adaptable Plug-and-Play
Alba works right out of the box with a set of default settings for light levels, hues, and times. Using its app, a user can then
make adjustments according to ones lifestyle. At any time, the app can override default or programmed settings. Like
the Nest thermostat, the bulb can learn by tracking the users manual adjustments over time. In fact, Stack sees a future
where devices like the Alba and the Nest communicate with each other to create the perfect environment while saving
energy. That future has no light switches - just smart lights and apps. Im not sure Id want my entire house controlled
exclusively by a smartphone app; I think a centrally-located wall-mounted controller would be a good option.

A Day in the Light

First thing in the morning, Albas default settings will turn the lights on to a cool hue that gradually brightens. This helps
wake the user without being too abrupt. As the day gets naturally brighter, the bulb will dim itself in order to save energy
while maintaining a constant brightness. If it senses that the room is empty, it turns off the lights. When a person enters
the room the lights automatically turn on to the optimal level and hue.
In the evening the Alba slowly adjusts to a warm setting, creating more of a mood lighting effect. And as the night
progresses, it continues to dim the lights, reminding you (or the annoying guest that just wont leave) that its approaching
bedtime. If it senses movement in the middle of the night, Alba will turn the light on to a dim, warm setting, providing just
enough light to help a person reach their destination without eliciting a full wakeful state.

Motion Sensors and Smart Controls

Stack claims that sophisticated lighting controls for commercial locations can cost $100,000 or more. Each Alba comes
with an array of embedded occupancy sensors and light sensors, eliminating the additional wiring, circuitry, and expense
of adding the sensors and controls separately. Adding intelligence to the lights themselves, as opposed to using a separate
control system, ensures that the lights and controls are fully compatible.

The bulbs communicate through a Zigbee wireless mesh network. One hub is sufficient for 50,000 bulbs; the hub can talk
directly to the nearest bulbs, which can then relay information to other bulbs in the network. While 50,000 is overkill for a
home user, Stack has its eyes on the commercial market too.

Energy Savings and Analytics

Lighting accounts for 25% of the electricity used today. Based on case studies at pilot commercial locations, Stack
estimates that an array of Alba bulbs can reduce energy consumption by up to 80% when compared to other LED bulbs.
Commercial enterprises are always looking to save money, and lighting efficiency is a hot topic among building managers
today. Stack is developing analytic software to help businesses determine lighting needs and energy savings. The company
plans to roll out the analytics at the same time that they release their bulbs for commercial applications. For now theyre
cutting their teeth on the residential market.

Calling All Engineers

Stack Lightings CEO and founder, Neil Joseph, was working at his desk at Tesla Motors when he noticed all the bright
sunlight coming into his office and wondered why the lights were on at full intensity. Thats when he decided to leave Tesla
and start his own company. I often tell my students that in todays market, the job you get might be the job you create for
yourself. If youre not ready to go out on your own but want to be part of a young upstart company, Stack is looking for
electronic, mechanical, and software engineers to help develop its product line and software analytics. Ah, if I were 20
years younger...

Coming Soon
Stack Lighting plans to ship the first wave of Albas early in 2015. Alba is designed as a screw-in replacement BR30 flood
light, but the company is also working on bulbs for recessed lighting, A19 (round) bulbs, tubes to replace fluorescent
lights, and more.
Other smart lighting companies have come and gone. Philips has the advantage of being an established corporation with
deep pockets for R&D and marketing. Itll be interesting to see how well the Alba and its siblingsstack up against the
competition. I have a feeling that regardless of whether Stack Lighting survives as a company, its ideas will surely change
the lighting market.

Home with a Skin Wins 2014 Solar Decathlon

The 2014 Solar Decathlon in Europe asked university teams to design and construct a house built for sustainability. This
years winner, Delft Universitys Prt--Loger, realized that reusing is more sustainable than rebuilding, so the team
designed a retrofit skin that turns an existing house into a net-zero energy home.

The skin consists of passive and active solar elements, including a steel and glass three season porch whose windows can
be closed in the winter to create a greenhouse effect and opened in the summer to allow natural ventilation. The skin
makes year-round gardening a possibility in any climate. The steel skeleton is pretty much self-supporting, so the house
doesnt need to bear unreasonable structural loads. On the active side, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) produce
enough electricity to meet or exceed the homes requirements.

Photovoltaics
The BIPV system is a trade-off between letting in natural light and capturing enough sunlight to generate an adequate
amount of electricity. A combination of roof and window mounted monocrystalline PV panels provides up to 4.875 kW
while letting 35% of the sunlight into the interior. A PVSyst simulation estimates that the system will produce about 3.8
MWh each year. Of course, those estimates depend on the orientation of the original house as well as local shading effects.
My ballpark calculations suggest that the PVSyst estimate is based on an unshaded south-facing location, so the reported
numbers represent a best-case scenario.

Lighting and Electricity

All electrical lights are energy-efficient LED bulbs, and solar tubes provide additional natural daylighting. An innovative
plug-and-play cabling design allows the lighting to be reconfigured and expanded easily, and a radio frequency control
system lets the user adjust the lighting wirelessly, further simplifying the wiring installation. All electrical appliances are
chosen primarily based on their energy-efficiency ratings. Small motors control the glasshouse windows and shading, and
ventilation fans and a heat recovery unit (a heat exchanger) provide fresh air and climate control.

Water
Almost one-third of all domestic water use goes right down the toilet - literally. To eliminate this waste, the house
incorporates a rainwater collection system thats used for toilet flushing. Low-flow faucets and showerheads also
contribute to water conservation.

Water is heated by a solar-thermal system thats installed under the PV panels, serving a dual purpose of cooling the
panels (increasing their efficiency) and heating water. The solar water heating meets up to 90% of the hot water
requirements; an air-sourced heat pump supplements the system in the winter.

Heating and Cooling

The skin consists of a warm (south-east) side and a cool (north-west) side. Passive heating and cooling techniques are
used as much as possible. The warm side includes controllable shades to reduce incoming sunlight in the summer but
allow it in the winter. The cool side adds a thick layer of insulation.

One of the basics of passive heating and cooling is the use of a large thermal mass. This is difficult to do in a retrofit since
the structure already exists, so the designers included an under-the-floor box filled with a phase change material (PCM) to
store excess heat during the day and radiate it at night. In the summer, the excess heat can be ventilated through the
chimney, bypassing the heat exchanger.

11 Robot Robot Tercanggih Di Dunia

Technology Terbit May 21, 2013 pukul 12:25 pm
