Why Conglomerate Business?

Mirza Salman Ispahani, managing director of the group, replied, "Different businesses
emerged because of different reasons we entered the travel and ISP sectors by spinning of
internal departments which were doing a good job. The foods segment was an attractive idea
14 | P a g e

considering the distribution synergies with the existing tea business". The name Ispahani
represents something of value to the average person today it stands for dependability and quality
product, a perception that has been possible only after years of consistent performance.

Challenges facing by Ispahani

Challenges facing this generation of Ispahanis are different from those handled by
predecessors. The overall market is now more competitive, quality and productivity are more
critical factors today than ever before. Management, however, considers the future to be
promising for both tea and textiles which is the primary revenue-generating sectors of the group.
Tea has increasingly become less vulnerable to volatility in international markets since 80
percent of local production is now consumed domestically. Forecasts for textiles are also
optimistic since competitiveness and short lead times in the future will have to mean local
sourcing. In that scenario, anyone offering quality products at competitive prices while managing
cost efficiencies, productivity, and up-to-date learning should be able to survive the post MFA
(multi fibre arrangement) challenges.
3.3 Comparative Assessment:
To start with a keen comparative assessment, it needs to be mentioned that both of the
companies secure a pioneering position in Conglomerate business in terms of product, operations
and strategies approaching in different industrial sector. Nasir Group of Industries which was
started back in 1970 as a small trader and now owns 10 different business units in different sector
including Float Glass, Melamine, Printing and Packages, Tobacco, Footwear, Glassware and
Tube, Energy Saving Lamp etc. Whereas Ispahani Group of Industries started their business long
years back then Nasir group in 1820 and now owns 8 to 9 subsidiaries including Tea, Consumer
food, Textile, Yarn, Jute, Shipping, Real estate etc.
Concentrating on product differentiation Nasir group is the biggest and first float glass
manufacturer in Bangladesh and they have a huge exporting market in 9 different countries
which helps to earn a lot of foreign currency thus improving our economic condition. They
always try to go for those products which are not available in Bangladesh mainly with an aim to
generate employment. On the other hand Ispahani group are well recognized for its vast Tea
15 | P a g e

manufacturing and Tea trading business activities as a result they own 50% market share of
national brand tea & 80% market share of branded tea bag. Unlike Nasir group, Ispahani Group
invests a huge amount in CSR activities. They have established a School, College and a hospital
named Islamia Eye Hospital in 1960. Beyond this they also act as a sponsor of various cricket,
football, tennis, golf etc.
In comparison of distribution strategy Ispahani group have strong distribution strategy
then Nasir group. They have a wide distribution network of 490 sales centers and 20 zonal
offices. Further more Ispahani group is involved in continuous investment in Infrastructure,
Human Resource training to ensure greater product quality. They also have competitive pricing
strategy which enables them in achieving economics of scale.

4.

Future Projections:

4.1

Nasir Group of Industries:

At Nasir group, they think of new projects, work out its cost-benefits, and visualize its

potentials and long term impact on the national economy taking full cognizance of its effects on
our environment. Innovativeness is one of their key issues. They have excelled in areas of
plastics, melamine, footwear, float glass, CFL lamps, etc. and now they are forging ahead for
entirely a new project i.e. very high grade glass tableware and glass tubing for fluorescent and
energy savings lamps, never made before in Bangladesh. New projects of Nasir Group in hands
are Float Glass line, maize, starch, corn oil and feeds etc. They strongly believe that they can
make more varieties of products of different designs compared to what they have currently
available in the market. They are determined to understand the customers of Bangladesh and
continuously release new products to move with the time to suit the changing tastes of the people
using best available raw materials procured from around the world and also using the best
available machinery leaving no scope of doubt.
The on-trial industry will not only serve our dining tables but will also add to the decor of
houses by providing the energy saving compact and non-compact fluorescent lamps. Most of
their industries are import substitute industry with high export to India, Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan,
Sri-Lanka, some European countries, USA etc. They provide not only direct employment of
16 | P a g e

about 10000 people but indirect employment of many folds over. The backward and forward
linkage industries arising out of their production lines add substantial economic benefits to the
nation and further more employment.
4.2 Ispahani Group
Future plans of the company include expansion of tea, textiles, ISP and poultry divisions
of the group. The group's financing strategies have remained outside of the public stock market
but the owners may consider it as an option for new businesses. Since their initial equity was
invested in 1934 which has grown manifolds over the years a public offering at this point of time
will result in huge capital gains tax however it is a plan for smaller and new investments. Since
the theme of the Bangladesh Business Awards is "Bringing Global Corporate Standards to
Bangladesh", they asked what global standards Ispahani has succeeded in implementing locally.
The director's response was, "Exposure to international benchmarks. We send managers from the
tea and textiles divisions abroad regularly to attend training sessions and trade fairs so that they
can keep abreast of what's happening in their fields". Today, after centuries of business in the
subcontinent, the House of Ispahani is still dedicated to its mission of excellence in providing
high quality goods and services, making a positive impact on the overall community, and
attaining leadership positions in all its operating sectors

5.

Conclusion:
Nasir Group is focused on creating a strong and sound future for accelerated growth

benefiting all. Nasir Group shall continue to act in the best interests of its customers, employees,
shareholders and of course, Bangladesh. The company is trying to supply export quality products
at a cheap rate than its competitors and imported glasses. So it is competing both on the basis of
quality and price. The company is also enhancing its promotional activities to raise its sales
volume and maximize profit. The company uses a short vertical distribution channel to distribute
its products. At a glance to compete in a competitive market, where both domestic and
international competition is present, Nasir group of industries can be considered as a successful
one.
Ispahani group as one of the largest conglomerate business in Bangladesh besides
pioneering in Tea manufacturing, they always endeavored to support worthwhile cause by
establishing school, college and hospital. They always initiated to create a social worth full life
17 | P a g e

by providing quality education to students thus enabling them to build their own identity in
society. They hold a good percentage of market shares in Bangladeshi Tea Manufacturing
Industry thus securing more than 300 corer annual turnover. As a competitive advantage they
have achieved price competitiveness compared to any other Tea manufacturing company in
Bangladesh. They have proactive strategies which enables them to respond according to market
changes.
