Escape from Freedom, known as The Fear of Freedom Erich Fromm
Dialectic of Enlightenment Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno One of the core texts of Critical
Theory, Dialectic of Enlightenment explores the socio-psychological status quo that had been
responsible for what the Frankfurt School considered the failure of the Age of Enlightenment. Together
with The Authoritarian Personality (1950; also co-authored by Adorno) and Frankfurt School
member Herbert Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man (1964), it has had a major effect on 20th century
philosophy, sociology, culture, and politics, inspiring especially the New Left of the 1960s and 1970s.
Minima Moralia: Reflections From Damaged Life Theodor Adorno
Eros and Civilization: A Philosophical Inquiry into Freud Herbert Marcuse is a 1955 book by the
German philosopher and social critic Herbert Marcuse, in which he proposes a non-repressive society
and attempts a synthesis of the theories of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud; it has been suggested that
the work also reveals the influence of Martin Heidegger. The title of Eros and Civilization alludes to
Freud'sCivilization and Its Discontents (1930). One of Marcuse's best known works, Eros and
Civilization has been compared to Norman O. Brown's Life Against Death (1959), among other books. A
new edition, with an added "political preface", was published in 1966.
One-Dimensional Man: Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society is a 1964 book by
philosopher Herbert Marcuse.
Negative Dialectics (German: Negative Dialektik) is a 1966 book by Theodor W. Adorno.
The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere: An Inquiry into a Category of Bourgeois
Society Jurgen Habermas
The Theory of Communicative Action Jurgen Habermas
We must love all nations as we love our own, writes Russian philosopher
Vladimir Sergeevich Solovyov in his 1897 book The Justification of the Good.
The greatness and value of nationality, he claims, lies not in itself taken in
the abstract, but in something universal, supernational Nations live and act
not for their own sake but for the sake of what can be of service to all.
The Justification of the Good is one of three books which the Kremlin sent out
this January to regional governors and senior members of the ruling United
Russia party. The other two are Nikolai Berdyaevs Philosophy of
Inequality(written in 1919) and Ivan Ilyins Our Tasks (penned in exile after the
Second World War). As the West seeks to understand what motivates Russia
and its president, Vladimir Putin, these books perhaps provide a useful start. As
15
Colin Freeman of The Daily Telegraph commented on March 26, to find out
where Mr Putin thinks Russia has gone wrong in the past, read the works of Ivan
Ilyin.
