AfterLIFE Communication Plan

LIFE European Environmental Program “Collaborative Environmental Regeneration of

Ports – Cities: Elefsina Bay 2020” aimed to promote joint actions between the different
stakeholders of the region (industries, local community, local authorities, NGOs and
academic community) for the socio-economical and environmental regeneration of the
area, and to set an example, demonstrating that regeneration of such degraded regions is
possible through a dedicated investment in “participatory planning processes”.

Under the framework of a collaborative approach and deliberation method, there have
been a number of workshops, seminars and meetings, where on the area’s environmental
degradation, leading to possible proposals of solution, based on a Shared Vision for the
future development of Elefsina. The suggestions where all gathered in an Action Plan,
which can be the basis for future interventions in the area. After the conclusion of the
project, all partners will pursue the implementation of some of the actions dictated in the
Action Plan.

Elefsina Port Authority S.A.:

 EPA’s Division of Environment will keep operating promoting environmentally

sustainable practices and regulating EPA’s environmental footprint.

 The NTUA implemented a static study for the Old American Pier and declared that it
can be renovated into a public walkway for the citizens of Elefsina. Although not a direct
priority, EPA will further study the matter and seek certification by a public body in order
to guarantee secure passage and proceed with the works.

 AIS was installed in 2006 under the framework of this LIFE project and will keep
operating and recording vessel traffic in Elefsina Bay.

 There is going to be a third competition for the refloating of certain shipwrecks in

the Bay of Elefsina.

 Various actions are being taken by EPA’s management for the transfer of the
commercial port in a different coastal location, outside the urban area of Elefsina.

 EPA has managed to obtain the EMAS certificate putting into enforcement the LIFE-
ECOPORT guidelines. Now the company is planning to promote its environmental

management system practices and the experiences gained to other ports in Greece and
other countries.

MEDITERRANEAN SOS Network:

 The two Committees (Neighborhood Committee-Bay of Elefsina 2020 and Bay of

Elefsina 2020 Committee) will keep meeting after the conclusion of the program, in order
to retain and strengthen all bonds that have already been developed between stakeholders
through the collaborative processes, and to promote the further implementation of
suggestions included in the Action Plan.

 MEDSOS will continue supporting environmental sensitization/education activities

in the Cultural and Environmental Information Center of Elefsina (CEICE) and in schools of
Elefsina, utilizing the special educational package produced for the purposes of this LIFE
project, as well.

Elefsina Municipality:

 Fulltime operation of the CEICE. Organization of educational seminars for educators

and students, meetings and workshops for student environmental groups as well as
citizens, and other events.

 Transformation of the CEICE into a “green building”, by establishing proper

infrastructure, reducing energy loses (insulation) and implementing renewable energy
practices. A board will show the lower need in energy and calculate the reduction in the
“Carbon Footprint”.

 ELMUN has already proceeded with the implementation of a program for the
reduction and sustainable management of solid waste (LIFE+ Environment Policy and
Governance “The development of ‘Pay As You Throw’ systems in Hellas, Estonia and
Cyprus”).

Urban Environment Laboratory (NTUA):

 Since 2002, urban planning as well as matters of urban design in the city of Elefsina
have been and will continue to be subjects of study for the scientific team of the
laboratory.
