Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

Scope
Automotive Industry:
This project gave me an idea on how assembly work in automotive industry a little bit.
As we all knew the assembly in automotive industry is quite complicated in real
situation, so this simulation will give an overview on how the manufacturing processes of rim are
going on. Automotive industry is an industry which is involves in the design, manufacturing and
also selling motor vehicles. It is also known as one of the important economic sectors that can
help every country in the world. That is why to reduce lead time in assembly motor vehicle, I
need to design a proper layout.
Scope of my project was to manufacture rims for cars. In this project, I produced two
types of rims that will undergo casting, drilling, heat treatment, finishing, inspection and lastly
packaging before sending it to vendors.

Objective

To understand on how the manufacturing processes of car rims for cars in automotive
industry

To explore the more on the Delmia Quest software in developing the layout simulation.

Achievement of Project
From this project, I am able to create my own layout for the production of car rims. Using
Delmia Quest software, I did generate and analyzed the data of the layout. This project showed
the important of virtual layout in real automotive industry. From this project, I am able to explore
more about Delmia Quest.

INTRODUCTION
What is Quest?
Delmia Quest is the digital manufacturing platform subsystem of Dassault Company
based on discrete events. It provides simulation environment based on the delivery of materials,
processing and storage. It contains material element for rapid modeling such as machine tool,
buffer, treatment process, failure rate, maintenance, operator, path and material export, which can
help users simulate and analyze the process flow in 3D factory environment. Quest provides
three-dimensional simulation environment for the analysis of production process flow and
production efficiency. The Quest model must be established before simulation and analysis. The
following three steps are basic steps to establish a Quest model. Firstly, three-dimensional
geometrical model of production resources object such as processing equipment, logistics
equipment and operator must be established, making production line in virtual environment
similar to real production line. Quest contains initial model of common production equipment
and logistics equipment, such as processing equipment, buffer station, feed station, AGV, crane,
conveyor, labor and so on. Geometric model should be placed in three-dimensional space
according to workshop layout, which achieves virtual physical modeling of the entire workshop.
Secondly, object behavior, technological process and system operation rules of production
resources should be defined. The object behavior refers to the loading, processing, and unloading
behaves of the processing equipment. Logical order of work piece is defined by technological
process of manufacturing system, making independent device in the system connected into a
whole process logical. System operation rules can ensure the normal operation of the simulation
model and avoid conflict in the system. Finally, production line is simulated based its model,
real-time utilization and average utilization of the key equipment and labors can be obtained. The
data of logistics production beat and stacking situation can also be seen clearly. According to
these data, the bottlenecks in the production line can be found and then the layout of the
production line and logistics scheme can be optimized.

Industry Selected & Assignment Requirement

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

In this project, the industry that I selected is automotive industry. The rims will undergo
casting, drilling, heat treatment, finishing, inspection and lastly packaging. My layout consists of
6 machines, 2 conveyors, 1 source, 1 sink, 1 labor, 1 power and free system, 1 sub-resource and
1 AGV system.

PROCESS MODEL

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

Element used in the model

Machine is an element where it will do

any process that had been assigned to it.
From this case, the machine is assign to
do the assembly process.

Fig 1: machine

AGV is an element that uses to carry

parts from one place to another. AGV is
used to send the boxes containing
finished rims to the sink

Fig 2: AGV

Used to be temporary stores to

keep parts that will be assembled
to main body.

Fig 3: Buffer

Sink is where the end of product

will go at the end of its process.
The sink will be a location where
is a final product gathered.

Fig 4: Sink

Sub-resource is an element that represent a part that going

to be assemble. It means that the sub-resource act as the
final destination of the other parts. Several stack point will
be assign to the sub-resource in order to indicate the
position of the other parts.

Fig 5: Sub-resources

Parts are elements that use to

represent the product. There is two
parts in this model.

Fig 6: Parts

Source is an element that will

create part. The part is creates can
be determined and the user can
choose on which parts to come out
from which source.

Labor is used to do the process that

occurs in the model. In this layout,
the labor transferred the rim with
the attached fixture from machine
2 to machine 3.

AGV Controller is an element that

functions to control the AGV
element.

Power and free take the parts from

the machine and carry it along its
pathway and transport the parts to
another machine

system

The main function of the conveyor

is to transport parts into another
element. Conveyor may lead to a
junction or a two-way path.

Problems Encounter and Problem Solve

There are a few problems that encounter in doing this project. Here will be explaining on what
problem that encounters and how to solve it.
No.

Problem encounter

How we overcome the problem

Learning new function and

features

There are several function and features that need to

be learned in order to complete the simulation such as
sub-resource and power and free system. In order to
know more about the features, a lot of test had been
done.

Cannot import the CAD file

into Delmia Quest

I did try and error many times in order for the parts to
become the rim we draw in the CAD. I still did not
found what the cause of the problem is even though I
already follow the steps of converting the CAD file
into the format .stl which can be read in Delmia
Quest.

Labor did not pick up the parts

at machine 2 to transfer the rim

I did not set the labor requirement at the buffer near

to machine 3.

to machine 2.

EXTRA INFORMATION
Information on the new functions we learn on Delmia Quest
Sub-resource

Information on the sub-resource

First I create the sub-resource controller

and placed the controller on the shop floor

14

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

The rack was actually a buffer. I changed

the display of the buffer to rack on the
buffer options. We placed the tools and
fixtures on the buffer.

In the sub-resource options, I create the

tools and fixtures that will be placed on
the buffer.

15

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

I set up the processes for both tools and

fixtures and set up the quantity released
from the buffer to each machine.

I set up the process of tools and fixtures

on each machine so that each machine
will assign with either tools or fixture
depending on the requirement needed on
the machine.
16

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

Power and Free system

I create the path system for power and

free system

17

Computer Integrated Manufacturing MEM562

I then set up the decision point in the path

system. The carrier will pick up or drop
the rim at the decision points placed on
the path system.

I create the carrier that will pick up and

move the rim from one decision point to
another decision point.

Conclusion
In order to complete this project, I need to master or understand all the features and functions in
Delmia Quest Software. It takes a lot of time to complete this task in short period. I learn and try
to understand only features related to my projects. In the beginning of the project it was quite
difficult to learn something new without any guidance so I searched every source that can be
useful to complete my project. I can conclude that I managed to finish the project even though
there are a lot of problems that I had faced during the period in completing this project. I can say
that using Delmia Quest could result in improvements of the factory floor organization and
workers safety. Eventually it would be a benefit for domestic industries and help manufacturing
enterprises to stay competitive with overseas companies.
