1. Getting Started
About the Roland-PrintServer
The Roland-PrintServer makes it possible to connect printers and other devices from Roland DG Corp.
via Ethernet and use them in a network environment. There are two types: one built in to the printer or the
like, and an external type. It is compatible with 100Base TX and 10Base T (switched automatically).
* The usable features of the Roland-PrintServer are dependent on the printer it is combined with. Not all functions may be available for use.

Ethernet Cable Connection

Use Category 5 twisted-pair Ethernet cable. For connection to a hub, use straight cable.

1. Getting Started

Overview of Settings
The software RIP packed with a printer uses the TCP/IP.
Setup Sequence
Step 1
Enable the TCP/IP protocol for Windows or Macintosh, and make the settings for the IP
address and the like.

Step 2
Set the IP address and the like for the Roland-PrintServer.

Step 3
Set the output port and the like for the software RIP.

Refer to the following for specific setup procedures.

Windows 2000/XP
Macintosh (MacOS X)

See p.4 "2. Making the Settings for Windows 2000/XP"

See p.8 "3. Making the Settings for MacOS X"

For the Network Administrator

To make the settings for Roland-PrintServer in step 2, you use either "Net Tool" or "Mac Tool." You
can run these in the following operating environments.
Net Tool
Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP
Mac Tool
MacOS X
MacOS 9.x (CarbonLib extensions version 1.2.5 or later required)

2. Making the Settings for Windows 2000/XP

Important! The explanations in this section assume a small-scale network using a single hub.
In a large network, unsuitable settings may have a major impact on the functioning of
the entire network. Decide on setting values only after careful discussion with the
network's administrator.

Step 1: Settings for Windows 2000/XP

Log on to Windows as a member of the

"Administrators" group.

For Windows XP:

From the [Start] menu, click [Control
Panel]. Click [Network and Internet Connections], then click [Network Connections].
For Windows 2000:
From the [Start] menu, click [Settings], then
click [Network and Dial-up Connections].

Double-click the [Local Area Connections] icon. Click [Properties].

Select [Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)], then

click [Properties].
If the check box for [Internet Protocol (TCP/
IP)] is unselected, then click the check box
to select it.

Select [Use the following IP address].

Enter the information as shown below,
then click [OK].
[IP Address]: 192.168.0.XXX
[Subnet Mask]: 255.255.255.0
* Here, "XXX" may be any number you want
from 1 to 254. However, be sure to specify a
number that does not duplicate a number used
for another computer or device.

Close the [Local Area Connections] window.

Click [Installation], then [IP wizard].

When the screen for selecting manual
or automatic setup appears here, choose
[Manual TCP/IP configuration], then
click [Next]. (This screen does not appear when you're making the settings for
the first time.)

Enter the information as shown below, then click [Next].

[IP Address]: 192.168.0.XXX
[Subnet Mask]: 255.255.255.0
* Here, "XXX" may be any number you
want from 2 to 254. However, be sure to
specify a number that does not duplicate
the setting you made in Step 1.

Make sure the setting is correct, then

click [Finish]. Click [OK].
(Continued on the next page.)

2. Making the Settings for Windows 2000/XP

When the icon in the list changes to

a printer and the IP address you set
appears, the wizard ends. Quit Net
Tool.
If the icon remains unchanged (" "),
the IP address or another setting is unsuitable. Redo the settings.
The " " icon does not indicate a problem. It indicates that the printer is not
on line.

For the Network Administrator

In procedure 5 on the previous page, clicking [Actions], then [Properties] displays an advanced setting screen for administrators.
* Usable features depend on the printer using in combination. Not all functions may be available for use.

Step 3: Port Settings for the Software RIP

Make the settings for the software RIP. For the output destination, specify the IP address for the RolandPrintServer you set in Step 2. For information about how to make the settings, refer to the documentation
for the software RIP.

3. Making the Settings for MacOS X

Important! The explanations in this section assume a small-scale network using a single hub.
In a large network, unsuitable settings may have a major impact on the functioning of
the entire network. Decide on setting values only after careful discussion with the
network's administrator.

Step 1: Settings for Macintosh

If a number of users are registered in MacOS X, log in using a user name with administrator rights.

From the Apple menu, open [System

preferences]. Click [Network].

For detailed information about the features of the Roland-PrintServer, refer to the "Roland-PrintServer
User Manual" on the Roland-PrintServer CD-ROM. This is a manual in electronic format (PDF format).
To view it, install and set up Adobe Acrobat Reader.

For Windows: [Acrobat] - [English] - [Ar405eng.exe]

For Macintosh: [Acrobat] - [English] - [Reader Installer]

What to do if...
Printing over the network is not possible.
Make sure both green lights on the Roland-PrintServer are illuminated.
* If you're using a built-in type, the green lights are next to the Ethernet connector.

If one green light is dark, switch off the power to the printer (the main power) or the Roland-PrintServer.
Again switch on the power and check the green lights.
If one green light remains dark even after you reset the power, it means the Ethernet cable connection is
not suitable. Make sure it is securely inserted all the way, as far as it will go. Also, try replacing the cable
with a new one. Make sure that the crossover and straight cables are used correctly. (If the connection is
made through a hub, use straight cables.)
If one green light is flashing, it means the Roland-PrintServer settings are not suitable. Try making the
settings for the IP address and the like again. If this does not correct the problem, reset the RolandPrintServer and make the settings again. The resetting method is described on the next page in this document.
Both green lights are illuminated, but printing is not possible.
Make sure the settings for the IP address and the like are appropriate. The network connection will not be
made if the appropriate settings are not made both on the computer and on the Roland-PrintServer. Try
making the settings again as you check for duplicate IP addresses and typing errors.
Check the port setting for the software RIP. In the software RIP, specify the IP address assigned to the
Roland-PrintServer.
Make sure the network routing is suitable. Try connecting the computer and the Roland-PrintServer to
the same hub, or connecting then directly using a crossover cable. If this makes it possible to perform
printing, it means the problem is in the network itself.

4. Appendix

I can't tell what IP address is assigned to the Roland-PrintServer.

Follow the same procedures for making settings described in this document and use Net Tool or Mac Tool
to search for the Roland-PrintServer. This displays the IP address that has been set.

The Roland-PrintServer is no longer visible.

If searching with Net Tool or Mac Tool fails to display the Roland-PrintServer, it is possible that unsuitable settings were made for the Roland-PrintServer. Reset the Roland-PrintServer and make the settings
for the IP address and the like again. The resetting method is described later in this document.

Resetting the Roland-PrintServer

Follow the steps below to clear all settings and return them to the factory defaults.
1. Switch the printer's main power off (or Roland-PrintServer).
2. Keep the small blue button pressed.
* If you're using a built-in type, the blue button is next to the Ethernet connector.
3. Switch the printer's main power on (or Roland-PrintServer).
The green and yellow lights are blinking rapidly.
4. Release the button within five seconds.
The green and yellow lights flash in alternation.
5. Press the button again.
The parameters are reset and both lights blink three times. The yellow light then blinks regularly.
6. Switch the printer's main power off (or Roland-PrintServer).
