Course Description
This course addresses the critical role of purchasing in supply chain management. The course
begins with a review of the basic components of purchasing followed by a discussion of the role
of purchasing in the supply chain and how it contributes to the strategy and profitability of the
enterprise. The course also addresses the legal aspects of purchasing and the relationship
between purchasing and inventory management, materials management, just-in-time
manufacturing, and manufacturing resource planning. Global sourcing and the role of supply
chain partnerships are also addressed, along with how to evaluate, bargain, and negotiate with
suppliers. Other topics include the relationship between purchasing and quality assurance;
different pricing methods; the use of different pricing strategies for different transportation
modes; and the role of purchasing in evaluating capital investments as well as professional
services.

Goals
This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the role and
responsibilities of purchasing in supply chain management. Case studies, exercises, projects
and presentations are used to provide students with the opportunity to apply concepts learned in
the classroom to solve real supply chain-related purchasing problems facing managers in
private or public institutions.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the role of purchasing in contributing to the profitability of the enterprise. (PO1
and PO3)
2. Explain the strategic planning process for purchasing, the basic components of
purchasing strategy, and the role of purchasing in corporate strategy. (PO1)
3. List the advantages and disadvantages of centralized purchasing and alternative
organizational structures for the purchasing function. (PO1 and PO2)
4. Define the legal aspects of purchasing, requirements for a contract, different types of
contracts, and the role and importance of electronic contracts and electronic signatures.

5. Explain the relationship between purchasing and materials management, inventory
management, JIT management, and MRP. (PO3 and PO4)
6. Analyze inventory using ABC analysis; determine the economic order quantity and cost
using the EOQ model; and analyze the impact of quantity discounts on purchasing. (PO3

7. List the steps in the conventional purchasing cycle and main activities of a typical
purchasing department. (PO1)
8. Describe the qualifications of a good supplier, supplier selection techniques, and the
potential benefits of supply chain partnerships. (PO1 and PO2)
9. Explain the role of purchasing in global sourcing and critically analyze various global
sourcing alternatives. (PO1 and PO2)
10. Explain purchasings role in quality assurance. (PO1 and PO3)
11. Analyze the relationship between cost and price and demonstrate a working knowledge

Activity 1.6 - Term Paper: Topic Submission/Approval: During Module 1, you must
submit your term paper topic to your instructor for approval via Blackboard email. Details
are provided in the activity.
Activity 3.5 - Term Paper: Outline Submission: During Module 3, you must submit
your term paper outline to your instructor for any instructor feedback. Details are
provided in the activity.
Activity 6.5 - Term Paper: Rough Draft Submission: During Module 6, you must
submit your term paper rough draft to your instructor for any instructor feedback. Details

Activity Descriptions
Content Presentation
Course content is presented through textbook readings and presentations, along with some
journal articles and other resources. It is critical that students keep up with assigned readings
and other content presentation activities according to the course schedule. All content is
subject to graded assessment through discussion participation, written assignments, the course
term paper, and exams.
Focus Discussions
Students are expected to routinely participate in Discussion Board activities. Superior
participation grades will be given to active students who exchange ideas in a thoughtful manner
while respecting the courtesies due others. All discussions require one primary original posting
to the topic and a minimum of two replies to peers, unless otherwise specified. Your discussion
board postings and responses contribute 15% toward your final course grade. Each discussion
activity will be evaluated according to a maximum possible 100 points based on the following
grading criteria:

Demonstrating relevance to the discussion topic (24 points)


Ensuring scholarship through the inclusion of substantiated evidence and following
correct APA formatting rules for any citations and references (18 points)
Following proper communication rules (18 points)

Your primary response is worth 60 points, graded according to the above listed criteria. Your
two required peer replies are worth 20 points each. The discussion participation evaluation
rubric, along with a helpful Discussion Board guide and participation checklist, is posted in
Module 1.

Chapter Discussion Questions


Chapter discussion question assignments are critical in meeting module learning objectives and
course outcomes. They are subject to assessment on the exams. Discussion questions should
be submitted in a word processed document and will be evaluated based on the following
criteria:

Chapter Discussion Questions are graded on a 100 point scale and combined are worth 20% of
your final grade. The Chapter Discussion Questions Rubric is posted in each Chapter
Discussion Questions Activity.
Case Analyses
Two case analyses are required. The purpose of case analysis is for the student to understand
and apply the material learned. Students will be assigned a Case Study during the Midterm and
Final Exams and will provide a report of the alternatives in 3-5 pages.
The report will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Each case is graded on a 100 point scale and combined are worth 10% of your final grade. The
Case Analysis Evaluation Rubric is located in each Case Analysis Activity.
Term Paper
Each student must prepare a formal 15-20 (min-max) page research report paper on a topic of
your choice related to purchasing or supply management. Specific topics must be approved by
your instructor in advance during Module 1 of the course. The final Term Paper will be
evaluated according to the following criteria:

Demonstrating quality and depth of content (60 points)


Organizing the report properly (10 points)
Following overall formatting requirements: Times New Roman font, 12-pt, double-spaced,
use of page numbers, title page, table of contents, appropriate labels on figures and tables
(10 points)
Demonstrating correct grammar and evidence of proof-reading, i.e., no spelling errors (10
points)
Including a variety and documentation of references used; format for references must follow
APA guidelines (10 points).

Your final paper will be submitted in Module 8 and is graded on a 100 point scale and is worth
15% of your final course grade. The term paper will be submitted using SafeAssign, an antiplagarism tool. More details on this assignment are given in Module 1. The Term paper Rubric
used for evaluating the final paper is located within each Term Paper Activity.

Exams
The Midterm and Final Exams assess your learning of the course content and the learning
objectives from Modules 1-4 and 6-8 respectively. Each exam contains 10 randomly-chosen
multiple-choice questions, worth 5 points each. In addition, there are 5 randomly-chosen short
essay (two to three paragraphs) items worth 10 points each. You will have 2 and 1/2 hours to
complete the exam. You will have only one opportunity to take the exam and you must fully
complete and submit the exam the first time you access it.
Assignment of Case Studies is chosen at random and will be presented during each exam so be
sure to record which Case Analysis you have been assigned!
Each of the exams is worth 100 points and each contributes 20% toward your course grade
(40% total).
Assignment Due Dates
All assignments are due by Day 7 of the corresponding module in which they are assigned or
stated to be due. Scheduled module dates are published alongside module titles on the
Modules menu page. Failure to meet submission dates will result in points being deducted
unless coordinated in advance with your instructor!

Course Policies
Academic Integrity
Embry-Riddle is committed to maintaining and upholding intellectual integrity. All students,

Online Learning
This course is offered through ERAU Worldwide Online (Blackboard) and runs nine (9) weeks.
The first week begins the first day of the term and ends at midnight EDT/EST (as applicable)
seven days later. Success in this course requires in-depth study of each module as assigned,
timely completion of assignments, and regular participation in forum discussions.
Late work should be the exception and not the rule and may be downgraded at the discretion of
the Instructor, if accepted at all. Unless all work is submitted, the student could receive a failing

grade for the course. Extensions may be granted for extenuating circumstances at the
discretion of the Instructor and only for the length of time the Instructor deems appropriate. The
most important element of success in an online course is to communicate with your Instructor
throughout the term.
Conventions of online etiquette, which include courtesy to all users, will be observed.
Students should use the Send Email function in Blackboard for private messages to the
Instructor and other students. The class Discussion Board forums are for public messages.
It is highly recommended that students keep electronic copies of all materials submitted as
assignments, discussion board posts and emails, until after the end of the term and a final grade
is received. When posting responses in a discussion forum, please confirm that the responses
have actually been posted after you submit them.
