1. What is sociolinguistics the study of ?


Answer : Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society, and how
language is used in multilingual speech communities. Sociolinguistics has become an increasingly
important and popular field of study around the world expand their communication base and
intergroup and interpersonal relations take on escalating significance.
2. Why is it necessary to study the role of language in society ?
Answer : Because, language and society are related. The relationship between language and society
affects a wide range of encounters from broadly based international relations to narrowly defined
interpersonal relationships. So, when we study the role of language in society, we will know how we
organize our social relationships within a particular community.
3. Language attitude may become one worthwhile concern of sociolinguistic investigation.
Give an example !
Answer : For example, sociolinguistic might investigate language attitudes among large populations
on a national level, such as those exhibited in the US with respect to the English only amandement
the legislative proposal to make English the official language of the US. Similarly, we might study the
status of French and English in Canada or the status of national and vernacular languages in the
developing nations of the world as symbols of fundamental social relations among cultures and
nationalities.
4. Acording to your understanding of the text, what will happen if people from mutually
unintelligitable language groups meet ?
Answer :
Pidgin
: a simple form of a language with a limited number of
words that are used together with words from a local language.
Creole
: a language formed from a mixture of a European language
with a local language.
Code-Switching : a word used to a respect from others group and others group
will be more understand .
Lexical borrowing : a word used because of lack of vocabulary.

5. In what way(s) does language use affects social relationships in a particular community ?
Answer : Language uses affect social relationships in a particular community in some following
ways 1. Based on the cultural value
2. Based on the norms of politeness

3. Based on the difference and status.


6. In what way(s) do social relationships affect language use ?
Answer : The way do social relationships affect language use through social structure, it
influences or determines behavior of society. For example :
Age- grading
Phenomenon, whereby young children speak differently from older children.
