AgeofTyrantsisa6mmscaletabletopwargameinwhichyoufightbattleswith
companiesofsoldiersandvehicles.Forthoseofyouwhoarenewtothissortofthing,
inatabletopwargameyouandyouropponentuseminiaturestorepresentyourarmies,
onaplayingareathatissetupwithmodelterrain.Youtakeitinturnstomoveyour
modelsusingatapemeasureorruler,andattackyouropponentsmodelsbyrolling
dicetogeneratecombatresults.

AgeofTyrantsisagameaboutcombinedarmswarfare.Thatmeanspulling
togethertheabilitiesofdifferentpartsofyourarmytocarryout
orders
and
achieveresults.Therearemanydifferentordersinthegame,eachwithitsown
setofrulesthattellyourminiatureshowtoact.Forexample,fight,move,
carryoutrepairs,etc.It'suptoyoutodecidewhatthebestorderwillbeinany
givensituation

Whentheorderiscomplete,playpassestotheotherplayer

Asthegameprogresses,basesthatsufferdamageandcasualties(knownas

)becomemoredifficulttoissueordersto,andleadersmaybe
destroyedreducingthenumberofordersyoucangiveinaround.
Thereforeyoumaynotbeabletoissueorderstoallbasesduringaround

TheCombinedArmsDoctrine
InAgeofTyrantsyoufightwith
companies
and
platoons
.Inbattleacompanyand
thebasesthatfallwithinitschainofcommandacttogether,carryingoutordersin
whichsomebasesstrikeattheenemywhileotherssupporttheirefforts.Forexample
aninfantrybaseassaultsanenemyposition,whileatthesametimeanotherinfantry
basepoursinsupportfireandanartillerybasepoundsit.

Youandyouropponentshouldagreeonapointslimitforyourcompaniesbeforethe
gamestarts.

Youcanplaywithmorethanonecompanyasideifyouwish,butwe
recommendstartingwithone

thecaptainisaseparatebasenotattachedtoanyplatoon
Eachbaseinthecompanyhasapointsvaluedetermininghoweffectiveitisin

AtypicalmixedplatoonofInfantryandvehicleswillbe3040points
Atypicalheavyplatoonofallarmourwillbe40+points

BaseCards
Eachbasehasaprofilecardonwhichyouwillfindasetofvaluesandspecialrules.It
istheinteractionsofthesevaluesandrulesthatdeterminecombatoutcomeby
comparingthemtoprofilesofbasestheyarefighting,orothersituationsthatarisein
battle.
Takeallofthecardsthatcorrespondtothebasesinyourarmyandseparatetheminto
pilesbasedontheplatoonthey'rein(remember,captainsaren'tpartofanyplatoon,so
placethemseparately).Laytheseoutnexttotheplayingareaintheirplatoon
groupingsforhandyreferenceduringplay.

Eachbasehasapointsvaluethatdetermineshoweffectiveitisin
battlerelativetootherbases.Whenyouplayagame,eachsidehasalimit

(oftenthesameforbothsides,buttheymaybedifferentdependingonthetype
ofencounter)whichthetotalpointsvalueofyourbasesmustnotexceed.
Ranges:
CombatiscarriedoutwithinseveraldefinedrangebandsinAgeof
Tyrants.Thevaluesshownhereareininches:

CombatValues:
Eachrangeentryhasasetofvaluesthatdeterminehowwell
thebaseperformsincombatatthatrange.Thehigherthevaluethemore
effectivethebaseis,andifit's0,thebasecannotengagetheenemyatthat
rangeband.Thesevaluesare:

Thissectionlistsanyspecialadvantagesordisadvantagesthe

SettingupthePlayingArea
Thefirstthingtodoisputdownterrainontheplayingarea.Aplayingareaof4'x4'is
sufficientforabattlefeaturingamediumsizedcompanyoneachside.

Asaruleofthumb,foreverytwocompaniesinplay(includingyourandyour
opponent'sarmy),haveone4'x4'sectionofplayingarea

Terrain
Therearetwobroadcategoriesofterrain,areasandobjects,whicharedefinedthus:

Areas:
Areascover,well,areasofthetabletop(e.g.asteamingalienswamp,
frozentaiga,orademilitarizedurbanwarzone).Therearefulllistsofareasby
faction,intheFactionssectionneartheendofthecorerules.Areashave
characteristicsthatdeterminehowabaseisaffectedwhenitmovesintothat
terrain
o Ifyouhaveourareaoverlaysandbattlematsyoucanusethose.
Alternativelyyoucanrepresentareasonthetabletopbyplacingan
irregularpieceoffabricandthenpositioningterrainobjects
representativeoftheareaontopofit(e.g.clumpsofreedsandalien

treesforaforestedswamp,orfactoriesandwarehousesforan
industrialfacility)
o Whenmovingbasesonaterrainarea,youmaymovetheindividual
terrainpiecesasidetoplacemodels(solongasthelimitsofthearea
remainclear)
Objects:
Objectsareindividualfeaturesthatareusuallysmallerornarrower
thanareas(e.g.lakes,ravines,rivers,aninterplanetarycommunicationsrelay,
etc.).Aswithareas,therearelistsbyfactionintheappropriatesectionofthe
rules.Youcantmoveyourbasesontothem,youhavetogoaroundthem,
climboverthemorusedesignatedcrossingpointsthatallowyoutotraverse
them
o Objectsarenevermovedasidetomakewayforbases,soiftheyre
impassable,thebasemustgoaroundoruseacrossingpoint

TerrainCharacteristics
Theterraincharacteristicsofareasandobjectsareusedintherulestoworkoutthings
likemovementpenalties,defensiveproperties,concealment,andsoforth.Thelistof

PlacingTerrain
Youandyouropponentcanagreeonyourownmethodofplacingterrain(youmay
evenhavefixedbattleboardswithalltheterrainalreadyonthem),oryoucanuseour
methodbelow.Ifyou'reinvolvedincompetitionplay,we'drecommendthelatter.
Oneplayergetstoplacealltheterrain,thisplayerisknownasthe
defender
.Itis
usualfortheterrainplacedbythedefendertobetakenfromtheirfaction'sterrain
selection(seelater).

Linearfeatures(i.e.longthinones),ifyou'regoingtohavethem,suchas
riversandravinesareplacedfirst.Linearfeaturescountas

CommandPoints
Eachleaderhasanumberofcommandpointsforissuingorders(usually4,Syntha
Commandersget3).Commandpointsareexpressedasaspecialruleontheleader's
profilecardandtheyworkasfollows:

Suppressionreducesthenumberofcommandpointsaleaderhas(unless
they'reSyntha).Aleader'scommandpointstotalisequaltotheirCommand
valueSP(

).Suppressionpointsarelikeaccumulated

Suppression
Suppressionaffectsordersadversely,andoccurswhenfatigue,shellshockand
casualtiestaketheirtollonbases,causingthechainofcommandtobreakdown.In
AgeofTyrantsthisistrackedby
suppressionpoints
,whicharecounters

placedwith
thebase.Suppressionisaddedprimarilybybadoutcomesinbattle,thoughthereare
othercircumstancesinwhichitcanbepickedup(e.g.bombardedbyartillery):

Ouraccessoriespackscontaincounterfortrackingsuppression.Ifyoudon't
useourpacks,you'llneedasuitablealternativeforrecordingsuppression

Abasethatsuffersenoughsuppressiontotakeitbeyondtwosuppression
pointsisdestroyed.Infantrybasesareremovedfromtheplayingarea,vehicles
areleftwheretheyareandgeta

TerrainandMovement
Thecharacteristicsofbattlefieldterrainhavedifferenteffectsonbasesdependingon
theirprimarymeansoflocomotion,forexampletrackedvehiclesmaygetbogged
downinswamps.

Whenbasesmovefromoneterraintypetoanother,theycontinuetheirmove
accordingtotherulesforthenewterraintype
E.g.anOctorisFalxbasewithMove8moves4''intoajunglethatis
difficultgoing.Theremainderofitsmoveishalvedwhileinthejungle,so

consistsofthreePersephoneTransports,oneofwhichisaBetaandaDemeter
Transport.ThePersephoneTransportisanotherSPOMMcontrolledgravliftvehicle
thatcaneffectivelytransportthreefireteamsandactasafirebase.Itisequippedwith
aturretcontainingtwinlinkedheavypulserifles,effectiveagainstalltargetsat
midrange.TheDemeterTransportisthesistervehicleofthePersephone,andwhileit
sharesthetroopcarryingabilityofitscounterpart,theDemeterisequippedformuch
shorterrangewarfare.Initsturret,theDemeterTransporthousesaplasmaprojector
unitthatisparticularlydeadlytoarmouratcloserange.

VASA
VASAretainsitsroleastheProtectorate,abodyseparatefromtheotherTripartite
PowersofViridia,SynthaandJunkers.Thebodyischargedwithenforcingthe
alliance,brokeringsettlementsindisputes,andpolicingthegravwellsuponwhichall
tradeandcolonisationeffortsdepend.Tocarryouttheseduties,VASAhasamasseda
hugefleetandsecurityforce,financedbychargingexcisedutiesontradethroughthe
gravwells.VASAisessentiallyamassivegalacticpeacekeepingforce,whichhas
increasinglycomeintoconflictwithitsmemberfactionsastheAgeofTyrantserodes
oldalliancesandtreaties.

VASAgrewbyincrementsoutoftheViridianspaceprogram,andwhilethefaction
neverbrokefreeofViridiainawar,liketheSynthaorJunkers,itdidusethose

secessionistconflictsasameansofestablishingitsindependence.Thefoundersofthe
VASAfactionwerescientistsworkingongravshuntingtechnology,basedon
Vacillus.VacillusisadistanticeplanetorbitingthedeadstarLeviathan,andassuch
ithadtobeselfsufficient.Inlateryearsthiscolony,seenbyallassufficiently
removedfromViridianinfluencetobeneutral,brokeredpeacedealsbetweenViridia
andtheotherpowersintheSecessionWars.Formalisingitsroleasapeacekeeper,
VASAadoptedthenameProtectorateandbuiltamassivemilitaryshipyardon
VacillusmoonKothon.

ThethirdcoreinfantryunitfieldedbyVASAistheDisperserTeam.Itismadeupof

DisperserTeam.TheSARTpatrolsconsistoftheusualmakeup,andtheDisperser
Teamisaheavyweaponcrewwhocarryandoperateheavydutymicrowaversfor
shortrangesupport.OneoftheSARTpatrolscontainsaLieutenanttocommandthe
platoon.

BlackLegion
TheBlackLegionareVASAsfearedelitejumptroopers.Asquadronofthem
consistsoffourBlackLegionpatrols.Theyareonlydeployedinmilitarysituations
andconstituteahighlyeffectivemobilestrikeelementonthebattlefield.Theyare
equippedwithjumpcapablepowerarmour,andweaponscalledionlancesthatare
deadlyinmidrangefirefightsanddoubleupasasortofenergyweaponpolearmin
closecombat.

MotorisedSquadron
MotorisedSquadronsprovidetrooptransportunderfirefortheProtectorate's
Suppressors.TheMotorisedSquadronconsistsofthreeBMD9Bears,oneofwhich
istheLieutenant,andaBMD11Eagle.TheBMD9BearisVASAsstandard
armouredtroopcarrier.Itiseffectiveasafirebaseformediumrangeengagements,
withitsturretmountedchainguns,andcantransportuptothreefireteamsofinfantry
(usuallysuppressors).TheBMD11EagleisusedinasupportroleinMotorised
Squadrons.IthasthesamechassisdesignastheBMD9andcanalsotransportupto
threefireteamsofinfantry.However,itsturretweaponisabeltfedgrenadelauncher.

ArtilleryBattery
ThecoreArtilleryBatterydeployedbyVASAconsistsoftwoTriglavs,anAlkonost,
andaLieutenantinaBMD9Bear.TriglavisthenamegiventoVASAsstandard
longrangeartillerypiece,whichisnormallyusedforcrowdcontrol.TheTriglav
consistsofawheeledchassiswithasonicweaponmountedonit.Likethemicrowave

weapons,thiscanbecalibratedfordifferenteffectsrangingfromirritanttodisperse
crowds,tocreatingalethalpulseofsoundthatcanburstorgansandshakestructures
topieces.TheAlkonostisamobilemortarthatusesadeadly,antipersonnelbeehive
round,whichfillsthetargetareawithastormofmetalflechettes.

IkonSquadron
IkonSquadronsconsistoffourKV18Ikontanks,oneofwhichhastheLieutenant
amongitscrew.TheIkonisVASAsmainbattletank,servingasthestandardvehicle
inarmouredcompaniesandinorganicsupportrolesforothertypesofcompany.The
iconsportsaturretmountedIonCannoneffectiveagainstalltargetsatmidrange,and
thehullisprotectedbymicrowavedispersalpods.

RedHammerSquadron
RedHammerSquadronsconsistoffourKV90RedHammertanks,oneofwhichhas
theLieutenantamongitscrew.TheRedHammerprovideslongrangesupportin
VASAarmouredcompanies.IncommonwiththetheIkonithasachassisprotected
withslopedarmourandmicrowavedispersalpods.Themainturretweaponisan
MLRS,whichlauncheslongrangemissilesthatbreakupinflighttorain
independentlytargetingmicromissilesonthetargetarea.
