1.

A fisherman casts her fisihing line a distance off 80 metres, during which the reel spins for
1.8 seconds. The reel has a diameter of 4 cm. Find in radians/second the rate of rotation of
the reel, stating any assumptions made in your calculation.

a. How many terms of the series 2 + 5+ 8 + are required to make a sum of 13872?
2.

b. If the sixth term of a geometric series is -32 and the eleventh term is 1, find the first term,
the common ratio and the sum to infinity.

a. The function f(x) is defined by f(x) = (3 + 4x)5.

i. Expand f(x) in ascending powers of x up to the term in x2.
ii. Using the series, obtain an appropriate value for 3.055.
iii. By evaluating the term in x3 in the expansion, find the appropriate error in the estimate
obtained in (ii).
3.

b. A survery is conducted among families of six children.

It can be assumed that the probability that a boy is born is 0.55, and that multiple births
(eg. twins, tiplets etc) are very rare.
Find the probability that in a family of six children:
i
all 6 children are boys;
ii
at least one of the children is a girl;
iii
both girls and boys are present.

a. Differentiate the following with respect to x:

i ( ) =
3+ sin

4.

ii

() = (2 + )5.

b. Using derivatives, find the turning points of the curve y = x3 3x. Draw a sketch of this
curve showing the turning points where the curve cuts the coordinate axes.

a. Evaluate to four places of decimals the integral:

1
0 ( + 2 ) .
b. A physical problem is modelled with the differential equation

5.

= cos .

Initially, when t = 0, x(0) = 1.

Using separation of variables, solve this differential equation to obatina x(t) in terms of t.
Draw a sketch of x(t) as a function of t over the range 0 t 4.
6.

Solve the following set of two simultaneous equations:

log 2 (x 5y + 4) = 0
log 2 (x + 1) 2 log 2 y = 1
The first, second and third terms of an arithmetic progression are u, v, u2 respectively,
where u < 0. The first, second and third terms of a geometric progression are u, u2, v
respectively.

7.

Show that u = 2 and find the value of v.

ii

Find the ninth term of the arithmetic progression.

iii Find the sum to infinity of the geometric progression.

A function f(x) is given by f(x) = x3 + bx2 + cx + d.
i

Differenciate f(x) twice to obtain the second derivative f(x).

ii

When f(x) is divided by (x 1), the remainder is 3. The term (x + 2) is a factor of f(x),
and x is a factor f(x). Find the values of the real constants b, c and d.

Solve the equation sin (sin cos ) = 0, for in the range 0 180o.

ii

Solve the equation cos 3 = 2 , for in the range 0 180o.

8.

9.

The matrix A represents an anticlockwise rotation through 3/2 radians, whilst the matrix B
represents a reflection in the line y = x.
10.

Write down the matrices A and B.

ii

Find AB and BA.

iii Interpret the matrices obtained in (ii) geometrically.
