Course Description
In this grammar course you will develop your knowledge of the form, meaning, and use of English
grammar structures at the intermediate level. These structures will help you understand and
communicate better in social and academic situations.

Course Objectives:


to learn and review verb tenses related to present, past, and future time frames


to master the grammatical uses and forms of nouns, pronouns, adverbs, articles, ,
comparisons, modals, questions, clauses and time markers


to learn and practice other grammar structures according to student needs
Attendance
Regular class attendance is required to be successful in this class. You are expected to attend all classes.
Absence from class for any reason will give you an absence for that day. There are no excused absences.
More than 5 absences in this course will lower the final grade by half a point for each additional
absence. For example, a student with 6 absences will have a B grade lowered to a C+. In addition, three
tardies (late arrivals) equal one absence! Be on time!
Homework
Homework is accepted only on or before the due date. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for
making arrangements to have your work handed in on time and to find out about the work you missed in
class, including any homework. An absence is not an excuse for not doing the work!
Cell Phone Use
Cell phones must be turned off during class. You may not answer or call on your cell phone in class.

Intermediate Grammar
Teaching Goals and Objectives
General Description
The role of the Grammar teacher is to increase students ability to communicate in English by:
Increasing awareness of the form, meaning, and usage of target structures
Providing practice which will help students internalize the grammar
Increasing students ability to monitor their own and others language use
Providing opportunities for spontaneous, communicative use of grammar structures
Goals
Students will engage in and practice activities that enable them:
1. to have control over intermediate-level structures (see Mastery Objectives) in spontaneous, communicative
speech and writing with some errors of form, meaning and use.
2. to have limited control over more difficult structures in spontaneous spoken and written activities. Students
might produce these grammar points in structured activities with accuracy but will continue to have
difficulty producing the forms in spontaneous, communicative speech and writing.
3. to recognize and understand the meaning of the most difficult structures, although they will be unlikely to
be able to produce them
The course textbook will generally guide the teacher, but the following structures should be addressed specifically.
Some of these structures will have been previously addressed at the elementary level.
Mastery Objectives
1. Simple present tense for future time in adverbial clauses of time
2. Prepositions used idiomatically after adjectives (happy about, interested in etc.)
3. Past and present participles as adjectives
4. Past and present passives with the direct object as subject
5. Present continuous forms of regular and irregular verbs
6. Negative questions
7. Simple present of verbs for a scheduled future action
8. The simple present of common verbs with WH-questions
9. Personal pronouns
10. Demonstrative Adjectives and pronouns
11. possessive adjectives and pronouns
12. It in subject position with reference to time, weather, people, and distance
13. Here and there used with pronouns and nouns and as a place substitute (I went there yesterday)
14. Group invitations and suggestions with an appropriate response (Lets)
15. The conjunctions (and, or, but) joining words and phrases
16. Modals in formulaic phrases (May I..)
