Introduction
1. INTRODUCTION
The City Mall is protected with the following Fire Protection System.
An Automatic Sprinkler installation is a device contrived for the detection and by the application of water,
extinguisher a fore in its initial stages. It is designed to carry out those functions automatically and its operation
simultaneously causes an alarm bell to sound.
The method of its application is by the action of the Sprinkler head inserted into the system of pipework fitted
throughout the building.
At normal temperatures, the sprinkler glass bulb contains the fluid in both liquid and gaseous phase. As heat is
applied, the liquid expands forcing it to push out against the bulb, causing the glass to shatter, opening the water way
and allowing the deflector to distribute the discharging water.
Hose Reel provides one of the most effective non-automatic means of extinguishing a fire in its early stage or
containing a large fire pending the arrival of the the fire brigade. It is able to scope with larger fire than portable
extinguisher, and is simple and convenient to handle. The floor distance coverage using Hose Reel usually ranging
from 100 ft. The water pressure is 30 psi at which pressure of 30 ft. jet is produced. In principle, Hose Reel are
strategically located in a building. They are normally housed in cabinets with a graphic board symbol 'HOSE REEL'
conspicuously displayed.
Portable Fire Extinguishers is useful when initial Fire-Fighting is called. Various type of Fire Extinguishers are
available for different purposes. Among all Dry Powder extinguisher is commonly used as it is effective for class A
(carbonaceous), B (flammable liquid) and C (flammable gas ) fires. CO2 Fire Extinguishers are used to kill fires
involving flammable liquids and gases. It is non-conductive and therefore particularly effective against fires in
electrical plant and equipment.

(NEW DRAFT TITLE CL.015580355) AT JALAN LINTAS, KOTA KINABALU FPS O&M CITY MALL version 1.0
Introduction
This system mainly consists of detectors, control panel battery and charger. Audible and visual alarm and electrical
power supply which will automatically raise an alarm in the event of the fire, and simultaneously transmit an alarm
signal to the fire control station.
Generally the location of the breakglass manual call point together with 6" Alarm Bell are installed at the passage
way leading to lobby and corridor of the building. The Smoke Detectors are located in the lift lobby area, lift motor
room and air handling unit room. Heat Detectors are normally installed in places where Smoke Detectors are
discouraged e.g. Diesel Generator room and workshop.
This system consists of a Master Handset in the main panel control room which is linked to other remote handsets
located at every floor of the building. The purpose of this system is to enable the Fireman to communicate at
different floor level and control station while fighting a fire within the building.
CO2 (carbon dioxide) is an odourless and colourless gas. The particular characteristics of this gas make it the
cleanest fire extinguishing method known to date. Carbon dioxide is electrically non-conductive. It is neither caustic,
corrosive nor contaminating. It evaporates without any chemical influence and leaves no residues. The extinguishing
effect is based on the fact that the oxygen content of the air is reduced, thus, choking the fire. This system is installed
in the substation.

(NEW DRAFT TITLE CL.015580355) AT JALAN LINTAS, KOTA KINABALU FPS O&M CITY MALL version 1.0
Description &Operation
This system has been installed, tested and commissioned according to the specification of the Local Fire Authorities.
The Hose Reel system covers the whole building and is installed along the sideway of the building.
1. HOSE REEL
The Hose Reel is of the swing type. Each Reel is complete with 1" x 50 ft. long non-link rubber hose. The
Hose Reel is finished in black colour which can be easily identified.
2. SHUT-OFF NOZZLE
The shut-off nozzle assembly is constructed from a non-corrosive resistant material conforming to BS336.
3. SYSTEM OPERATION
Opening of any of the Hose Reel nozzle results in a pressure drop in the system. This, in turn, starts the
electric duty pumpset. Should the duty pumpset fails to start, a further pressure drop will operate the
standby pumpset.
Care should be taken to ensure that no Hose Reel can be permitted to be operated for any other purposes. Should the
Hose Reel be used freely, the duty electric pumpset will start and stop frequently thereby increasing maintenance
costs, not to mention the frequent false alarms.

Description &Operation
Generally, the hose reel serves as an initial general fire fighting aid. In order for the user to operate the system
efficiently, the following instructions should be followed :
GENERAL INFORMATION
The basic function of the Fire Pump Starter Panel for electric motor driven fire pumpsets is to automatically start &
run the motor upon a drop in pressure in the water line.
When water pressure drops below a level which is preset on the internal pressure switch. the pressure switch will
open. The preset pressure switch will trigger the starter panel to start the duty pumpset. Should the duty pumpset
fails to start, a further pressure drop will operate the standby pump. At any time, only one pumpset shall operate. To
stop the pumpset, place the selector switch to 'OFF' position and press the red button 'STOP'. Therefore, the selector
switch must always be restored to 'AUTO' position.
FUNCTION
Note : The standby Hose Reel pump will operate automatically only when the duty pump is 'OFF' or fail to start.

(NEW DRAFT TITLE CL.015580355) AT JALAN LINTAS, KOTA KINABALU FPS O&M CITY MALL version 1.0
Description &Operation
This extinguisher is free flowing powder with a composition based on ammonium phosphate and
ammonium sulphates with special additive to improve fluidity and storage.
When discharge, the heat from the fire is greatly reduced. Firstly, because a cloud of powder provides an
effective heat-shield. Secondly, there is an immediately knockdown of the flames. Hence, the flames are
suffocated and any embers are extinguished by a layer of melted powder.
Carbon Dioxide gas is an efficient Fire Extinguishing agent which offers unique properties to user. The
colourless and odourless gas is heavier than air and works by smothering the flames and reducing the
oxygen content of the air around the fire.
Carbon Dioxide is the ideal agent for use on Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (flammable gas) fire.
It is non-conductive and therefore particularly effective against fires in electrical plant and equipment.
Carbon Dioxide Extinguisher are used throughout industry as a protection against complex industrial fires
where dangerous chemicals and gases are involved. Carbon Dioxide does not deteriorate with storage or
freeze in the container.
After use carbon dioxide disperses without leaving any contamination or corrosive residue but if used in a
confined area normal ventilation procedure should be followed.
Statistic proves that more and more fire are being detected too late for the fire fighting action to be innate in
time. It is the function of the fire alarm system to detect a fire, if possible in its incipient stage and
automatically alert an emergency service to isolate the source of a fire by means of fire protection and local
extinguishing facility.
Quick and reliable automatic alerting depends on the detection element of the automatic fire detectors. To
ensure the proper functioning of fire detectors, the response criterion must be based on the expected
characteristic of an incipient fire.

Description &Operation
Minimum Maintenance required. It is a closed supervisory type of system. Therefore, whenever fault occurred
automatic self detection will sound the buzzer with light indication.
The Genset Room, MSB Room, Transformer Room & Switchgear Room are protected with CO2 Extinguishing
System.
The extinguishing
effect is based on the fact that the oxygen content of the air is reduced, thus choking the fire. The liquified gas is
stored in high pressure gas cylinder. This cylinder is equipped with an electrical Solenoid actuator control from CO2
control panel. This actuator open the cylinder valve and the CO2 is discharge into the common manifold as well as
into the control piping from which the desired number of follow-up cylinders are pneumatically opened. The CO2
nozzles are open at all times.

Description &Operation
A. DESIGN SPECIFICATION
1. The installation is designed for extinguishing of fire involving electrical / electronic equipment
hazards and complied to the requirements of Malaysian Fire Protection Association.
2. The quantity of extinguishing agent is carefully predetermined to ensure the fastest possible
extinction of any fire in the protected area.
3. The protected area is provided with normally 50% @ 70 °F concentration of agent in the space of
protected area.
4. Normally a time delay of 25-30 seconds is set for discharge of gas after both two detector zones
receive alarm.
5. The system comprises the following features : -
a) CO2 containers charged with the required quantity of gas.
b) Automatic electric solenoid actuator, manual keyswitch box and manual pull box.
c) Automatic detectors, Alarm bells, Flashing lights & by pass switch.
d) CO2 control panel with 24V Dry Cell batteries and charger.
e) Discharge nozzles, piping and conduit wiring.
f) Discharge warning signboard.
6. The system is installed with 2.27 KG pilot cylinder used to activate all the slave cylinder when the
pilot cylinder is actuated.
B. SYSTEM OPERATION
The installation is operated from automatic mode using smoke/heat detectors under dual mode operation
and manual mode using electric keyswitch. The system is operated by an input voltage of 240V AC 50Hz
supplied to a power charger module within the panel. The AC voltage is transformed and rectified to 24V
DC. A set of Dry Cell batteries is provided as secondary supply in case of AC failure. These batteries will
automatically and instantaneously be switched into use as soon as the mains supply fails. Such a failure is
shown both visually and audibly at the panel. The batteries is trickled charged during normal operating
conditions. The hazard area is protected by two detectors i.e. one smoke and one heat detector. When one of
these detectors receive an alarm condition, a visual and audible warning bell will be given at the control
panel. In order to discharge the extinguishing agent automatically, both detectors must receive alarm
condition. This mode of operation is called 'Double Knock' system with a time delay of 30 seconds preset in
the control panel to discharge the extinguishing agent. This obviates the possibility of false discharge due to
one detector operating.
The facility to discharge the CO2 agent manually is also been provided via manual keyswitch. Also, in the
event of total failure of the control panel, the CO2 agent can still be discharged through mechanical manual
pull station by double action breakglass and follow by pulling the level. The detectors are continuously
supervised by zone supervisory module of the panel for line fault. Any break of wires, the module will both
visually and audibly inform by a fault lamp and buzzer.

This automatic sprinkler system is designed / installed in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Uniform
Building By-Laws 1976, Rules of the loss Prevention Council for Automatic Sprinkler Installation BS 5306 Part 2
1990 and subsequents and Jabatan Perkhidmatan Bomba Malaysia.
This automatic sprinkler system is using a deluge system with wet pilot actuation utilizes the deluge valve in
conjunction with open sprinkler nozzles. The system piping contains no water under normal conditions. Water is
held back by the deluge valve. With "wet pilot” actuation, a network of ½” or ¾" piping with closed ½" orifice
sprinklers is spaced throughout the area of coverage. This "pilot" piping is under water pressure and is connected to
the "wet pilot" (basic) trim of the deluge valve. When the "wet pilot” piping is pressurized / filled with water, the
diaphragm chamber of the deluge valve is also pressurized. This pressure in the diaphragm chamber is exerted to a
piston which forces the clapper lever against the clapper, holding it closed. When a fire activates a pilot sprinkler
detector, water pressure is released through the pilot sprinkler faster than it can be restored due to the restricted
orifice located at the inlet of the diaphragm chamber. This drop in pressure in the diaphragm chamber releases the
lever, allowing the valve to trip. Water enters the system piping and discharges from all of the sprinklers.
It is possible to isolate the sprinkler system via the insolation Rate value.

The C02 cylinder to be installed is calculated to cover the volume of the protected space. The room is under
surveillance of the Heat/Smoke Detection devices which work on a double knob basic.
Only with the activation of the two zones, would the CO2 gas be discharged.
If only zone one activates, 'ALARM' would be indicated and the bell will ring. When zone two activates the
CO2 agent will be discharged after 25-30 seconds (preset timing) through the balanced distribution piping
and nozzles.
In the case when the Heat/Smoke detectors is not functioning, use the manual electric keyswitch which is
enclosed in the metal box installed below the CO2 panel to actuate the CO2 gas or through mechanical
manual pull station by double action breakglass and followed by pulling the level to discharge CO2 agent.
