OF

ST PAUL

TO THE

HEBREWS 4 : 14 5 : 6

Our Merciful High Priest & Qualification for the Eternal, Holy Priesthood

Brethren: ... seeing then that we have a Great High Priest Who has passed
through the Heavens Jesus, the Son of God let us hold fast our
Confession.
For we do not have a High Priest Who cannot sympathise with our
weaknesses, but Who was - in all points - tempted as we are yet
without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly to the Throne of Grace, so that we may obtain
Mercy and find Grace to help in the time of need.
For every High Priest taken from among men is appointed for mankind in
things pertaining to God, that he may offer both Gifts and Sacrifices for
sins.
He can have Compassion for those who are ignorant and going astray
since he himself is also subject to weakness, and because of this, he is
required as for the people, so also for himself to offer Sacrifices for
sins.
And no man takes this honour to himself, but he who is Called by God just
as Aaron was - so also Christ did not Glorify Himself to become High
Priest, but it was He Who said to Him: Thou art My Son: today I have
Begotten Thee.
As He also said in another place: Thou art a Priest forever according to
the Order of Melchizedek.
THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING
OUR LORDS DIVINE TEACHING

OF

ST MARK 8 : 34 9

ETERNAL LIFE &

GOOD, FAITHFUL DISCIPLES

At that time, when our Lord Jesus had called the people to Himself, with His
Disciples also, He said to them: Whoever desires to come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up his Cross, and follow Me. For whoever
desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My
sake and the Gospels will Save it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his
own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For
whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He
comes in the Glory of His Father with the Holy Angels.
And He said to them: Truly, I say to you: there are some standing here
who will not taste death until they see the Kingdom of God present
with Power.

THE

3RD SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT

VENERATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

On the Third Sunday of Great and Holy Lent, the Eastern Orthodox Church
Commemorates the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christ.
Services include a special Veneration of the Cross, which prepares the Faithful for
the Commemoration of the Crucifixion during Holy Week
The Commemoration and Ceremonies of the Third Sunday of Great Lent are closely
parallel to the Feasts of the Veneration of the Cross (14 September) and the
Procession of the Cross (1 August).
Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare us for Commemoration of the
Crucifixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Great Lent is a period when
we are crucified with Christ (through our self-examination of our soul and our
personal Repentance-Confession.)
As we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires and will have mortified
ourselves during these Forty Days of the Fast, the Precious and Life-Giving Cross
is now placed before us to Refresh our soul and to Encourage, Comfort and Heal
those of us who may be filled with a sense of bitterness, resentment, and
depression. (GALATIANS 5:24)
The Holy Cross reminds us of the Passion of our Lord, and by presenting to us His
Example, it encourages us to follow Him in our own Spiritual and physical
struggles and sacrifices, being refreshed, assured, and comforted.
In other words, we must experience what our Lord Jesus Christ experienced during
His Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner.
The Holy Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall see the
fulfilment of our Hopes - the Heavenly Inheritance and Eternal Glory.
Like those who walk on a long and difficult path being bowed down by fatigue
and who find great relief and revitalisation in the cool shade of a leafy tree, so
do we find comfort, refreshment, and rejuvenation under the Life-Giving Cross,
which our Holy Church Fathers planted on this Third Sunday of Great Lent.
Thus, we are fortified and refreshed, and able to continue our Lenten Journey with
a light step, having been rested and encouraged.
Or, as before the arrival of a Great and Powerful King, His Royal Standards,
Trophies, and Emblems of Victory went in procession before him, after which the
King Himself appears in a Triumphant Parade, Jubilant and Rejoicing in His
Victory and filling those under Him with Great Joy, so does the Feast of the Holy
Cross precede the Coming of our Eternal King, Jesus Christ.
The Holy Cross announces to us that He is about to proclaim His Victory over Death
and Appear to us in the Glory of the Resurrection.
His Life-Giving Cross is His Royal Sceptre, and by venerating it we are filled with Joy,
rendering Him all Glory, Honour and Worship.
Consequently, we are Spiritually Prepared to welcome our Great, Eternal King, who
shall manifestly Triumph over the powers of darkness.
The present Feast has been placed in the middle of Great Lent for another reason.
The Lenten Fast can be likened to the spring of Marah, whose bitter waters the
Children of Israel encountered in the Wilderness.
Although its water was undrinkable due to its bitterness it became sweet when the
Holy Prophet of God, St Moses, dipped the wood of a certain tree into its depths.
Likewise, the Wood of the Holy Cross of Christ sweetens the days of the Great Lentent
Fast, which are bitter and often grievous due to our tears of contrition.

T O N E 3 4 4 T H A P - 7 T H T R I O D I O N - 3 R D L E N T - H O L Y C R O S S 3 A P R I L 2 0 1 6 3.

Yet Christ Comforts, Strengthens and Encourages us during our course through the
desert of the Fast, Guiding and leading us to the Spiritual Jerusalem on High by
the Power of His Glorious Resurrection.
Moreover, as the Holy Cross of Christ is the Tree of Life, It is placed in the middle of
the Great Lenten Fast, as the ancient Tree of Life was placed in the middle of
Paradise the Garden of Eden.
By doing so, our Holy Church Fathers have reminded us of the consequences of
Adams disobedience and gluttony as well as the fact that through this Tree of
Life our Ancestral Condemnation been abolished.
Therefore, if we bind ourselves to the Holy Cross of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Christ, we shall never encounter Death we shall never again be kept captive
and alienated from God by Death but by Divine Grace and the Love of Almighty
God we shall inherit Life Eternal.

Hriste O Theos.

God, guard us against the wanton

assaults of the evil one, and make us
worthy to worship Thy Divine
Passion
and
Life-bringing
Resurrection, to finish the Course of
the Forty Day Fast with ease, and
have Mercy on us, as Thou alone art
Good and Love mankind.
OF THE

1 Of old the Divine Moses

foreshadowed Thy Cross, passing
Israel across the Red Sea when he
struck the moist element with his
rod, singing to Thee, O Christ God, a
Song of Exodus.

HOLY CROSS - TONE 1

O Christ Master, establish me by

Thy Cross on the Rock of Faith, lest
my heart be shaken by the impacts
of the arrogant enemy; for Thou
alone art Holy.
4 When the greater Luminary
beheld Thee suspended on the
Cross, O Mighty One, he trembled
and,
drawing in his rays, hid
them. And the whole of Creation
praised Thy long-suffering; for the
earth was filled with Thy Praise.

ODE

To Thee, O Saviour of the world,

do we travel early, praising Thee,
having found safety in Thy Cross,
through
which
Thou
renewed
mankind and led us to the neversetting Light.
