BERNARD AMOO

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Pursuing a MSc Environmental Sustainability and Management degree at the
Wisconsin International University College is a principal area in my life which Im
ready to be fully committed to. After researching the program, I know I will not only
gain new knowledge and experience in my field, but I will be attending one of the best
environmental science programs in the country.
The rapid growth of the human population and the phenomenal industrial and
technological developments of human society over the past two centuries have placed
an exceptional demand on Earth's natural resources. As a result of these pressures, we
have witnessed an accelerated loss of biodiversity and a dramatic alteration of
ecological patterns (e.g., habitat loss and fragmentation) and processes (e.g., global
climate change).
I believe that these changes have potentially devastating consequences to mankind in
the long term if left unchecked. I am committed to seeking new and innovative ways to
manage natural resources in a manner that is ecologically sustainable and yet
economically viable and socially acceptable.
I am also motivated by understanding the ever-changing reality of the technological
world and the need to boost my own proficiency and professional aptitude.
I possess Bachelors Degree in Information Technology from the Methodist University
College Ghana and attained first class honors, and a Higher National Diploma
Mechanical Engineering from Kumasi Polytechnic.
My desire to further my education is also based on my own varied working experience.
For the past 11 years I have worked for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Korle
Lagoon Ecological Restoration Project (KLERP) department as a Mechanical Engineer
and subsequently the project supervisor. The KLERP is a multi-disciplinary project
that aims to improve the ecological and environmental aspects of the Korle Lagoon
through a programme of Dredging, Wastewater drainage and evacuation, Solid waste
relocation and dump site remediation (isolation), Flood alleviation and conveyance
improvements.
My current role as a project supervisor involves working on strategic planning for the
operation of the KLERP pump station to restore the Korle Lagoon to its former state in
which marine live was abundant and to offer substantial improvements to the citys
drainage and flooding problems by way of ensuring good flood water conveyance to
the sea.

Over the past two years I have been an Executive Member for James Town
Community Climate Change Club, a club sponsored by RIPS- University of Ghana.
I am applying to the MSc. Environmental Sustainability and Management because the
interdisciplinary nature of the degree is highly relevant to my current work. I feel the
opportunity to expand my understanding of different perspectives and challenge my
own view of environmental issues will benefit my current work.
My short term goal is to acquire my Masters degree in Environmental Sustainability
and Management in the next few years. This major accomplishment will furnish me
with the direction, ingenious energy and intellectual inspiration to work on the
forefront of effective environmental management.
My long-standing goals include acquiring a PhD, becoming a lecturer, accomplished
expert in Environmental issues, and a consultant.
It is apparent from above statement that, I am extremely motivated and determined to
undertake my masters program in Environmental Sustainability and Management at
the Wisconsin International University College.
By pursuing the Environmental Sustainability and Management masters program, I
hope to extend my vision and future expectations. This program will make it possible
for me to realize the objectives I have set for myself and I also look forward to have a
prolonged career in this field.
To this end, I anticipate to append to the general development of my countrys
economy, and hope to contribute extensively to the human society by enhancing the
attribute of life and living standards.
The MSc. Environmental Sustainability and Management will provide the opportunity
to meet and learn from other students who are working or planning to work in the
environmental field and will strengthen opportunities for networking.
Thank you very much for taking the time to evaluate my application. I am excited
about the possibility of graduate study at Wisconsin International University college
and look forward to contributing to the cutting edge work in science, management,
law, economics, and policy concerning the environment.
