Dasabdanayane Karya Ganana Vyutkramat Same || Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra Verse 46.156

The above shloka means that every group of three signs counted from Mesha is alternatively called
Vimsapada (Odd footed) and Samapada (Even footed) Rasi. Caution This should not be confused with
odd and even signs of Rasi.
To understand the above shloka, look at the picture above.

The first group (of 3) comprises of Mesha, Vrishabha and Mithuna are Vimsapada (Odd footed).
The next group (of 3) comprises of Karka, Simha and Kumari are Samapada (even footed).
The next group (of 3) comprise of Thula, Ali and Dhanus are Vimsapada (Odd Footed)
The next group (of 3) comprise of Nakra, Kumbha and Meena are Samapada (Even footed)

Dasa Period

Hora sastra 46.155 and Jaimini Sutra 1.1.28
Narayana dasa is a Rasi based dasa, unlike vimsottari which is a nakshatra based dasa system. The
shloka teaches us that the dasa period of a Rasi in years, is usually the number of signs gained from it to
its lord counted zodiacally or anti zodiacally depending on the Rasi being Vimsapada (odd footed) or
Samapada (Even footed) respectively.
For example, if the dasa period of Karka is to be calculated, we first determine that Karka is a Samapada
Rasi (Even footed) and hence the count is anti-zodiacally. If Chandra is placed in Dhanus, we calculate
from Karka to Dhanus in reverse to get 8. This 8 is further reduced by 1 to obtain the Dasa period of
Karka, which is equal to 7 years. (n=n-1). Some scholars are of the opinion that this deduction of 1 is not
needed. This is an ongoing debate and we for now will use the deduction.

Exceptions
Shloka Na Kwachit Jaimini Sutra 1.1.27
This are a few exceptions to the rule explained earlier (refer to Dasa period). The exceptions are as
listed below
1. If the lord of the sign is exalted, its dasa period is increased by 1 year and if the lord of the sign is
debilitated, then its dasa is reduced by 1 year. For example for Simha Dasa, with Surya in
Mesha, we get 5 years. (Simha to Mesha in reverse = 5. Applying N = N-1, we get 5-1=4. Now
since Surya is exalted, we add 1 more year to get Leo dasa duration of 5 years. Similarly, lets
calculate the dasa period of Vrishabha with Sukra in Kumari. From Vrishabha to Kumari we get 5
(zodiacal count as Vrishabha is Vimsapada Rasi). N=N-1, we get 4. Since Sukra is Debilitated we
reduce 1 year to get Vrishabha dasa period as 4 years.
2. The maximum period of a sign can be for 12 years. For example Budha in is Virgo, the dasa
period is always 12 years but we DO NOT increase by 1 year. Hence in this case the dasa period
is 12 years.

Dual Lordships
I have already taught you that Ali and Kumbha have dual lordships and hence we need a clear set of
rules to determine the dasa periods of these Rasis. I will list below a few possibilities that can occur in
charts
1. If both the lords are placed in the same sign, then the dasa of the sign is 12 years. Thus if Shani
and Rahu are placed in Kumbha, then Kumbha dasa period will be for 12 years. Same logic
applies for Mangala and Ketu.
2. If both the lords are together in another sign, count from the dasa Rasi to the sign occupied by
them and calculate the dasa period as taught in previous rule. (Refer to section Dasa period
earlier in this article)
3. If one of the lords is placed in the sign and the other is placed elsewhere, the dasa period is
calculated from the lord placed in the other sign. For example, If Mangala is placed in Ali, while
ketu is placed in Vrishabha; the dasa period is calculated by counting from Ali to the sign
occupied by the other lord i.e. Vrishabha, the Dasa period equals 6 years
4. If both the lords are placed in different signs, the stronger of the two will furnish the dasa
period. For this, we shall consider Jaiminis source of strength rules. ( Please see the source of
strength rules in the section Appendix - Source of strength at the end of this document.
5. If the signs occupied by the lords are of the equal strength, then the one contributing higher
dasa period should be considered. (Apply rule 5 only if the result of rule 4 has given you both
lords are of equal strength.)

Second Cycle of Narayana Dasa

In some case, the total dasa periods of the 12 Rasis can compute to a number that is less than the
longevity of the person. Hence Parasara talks about the second cycle of the dasa. For example let us
say that Lagna is Mithuna and Budha is placed in Thula. The first cycle of the Mithuna Rasi will come to
4 years. The total dasa Rasi cannot exceed 12 years. Hence the second cycle of Mithuna Rasi will be 124=8 years. (Assuming that Mithuna was the starting dasa sign).

Appendix - Source of Strength

1. The sign with a Graha (or more Grahas) is considered stronger than a sign without a Graha (or
with lesser number of Grahas)
2. The sign which is aspected by Budha, Guru or its lord is stronger. (Rasi Dristi only)
3. If the signs have equal number of grahas, then the status of the grahas like exaltation,
Moolatrikona, own house etc. should be considered to decide the stronger sign.
4. If they are still equal in strength, or without Grahas, then the natural sign strengths have to be
considered. Parasara teaches that Dual signs are stronger than fixed signs and fixed signs are
stronger than movable signs.
5. If both signs are of equal strength after applying rules so far, then the degrees of their lords
need to be evaluated. The lord with higher longitude (within the sign) shall make the sign
stronger
6. If both the lords have the same longitude, then for an even sign, the placement of lord in a male
sign, or for an odd sign, the placement of the lord in female sign is the source of strength. Male
signs are odd signs and even signs are female signs Caution The reference of odd and even
signs here is NOT ODD-FOOTED AND EVEN FOOTED.
7. If the two lords are still equal in strength, then the sign that gives a higher dasa period is
stronger.
Please note The above rules are exclusive of each other. This means that if the stronger lord has been
determined in one of the steps, we DO NOT apply subsequent rules.

Note This is the first part of the document and I have limited the scope to calculation of the dasa
periods. Once the assignments are all submitted and evaluated, I will post the second part that deals
with order of Narayana Dasa.
