A ls o k n ow n a s sa n d wi c h mo l d i n g , t h i s proc e ss c a n
b e u s ed for t h e p ro d u c t i o n o f m u l t i -l a y e r pa r t s
(usually three layers) and involves separate injection
of th e s k in a n d c o re me l t s.
Th e tw o ou t e r s k i n s p ro v i d e t h e p a r t wit h a highquality surface finish, while the reinforcing materials
in th e cen t r a l c o re i m p ro v e t h e p a r t 's me c ha nic a l
and heat-resistant properties. The use of reclaim for
the core can help to reduce costs considerably, and
a foa m c ore re d u c e s we i g h t .

Th e rota r y t a b l e sy st e m i s t h e o n e m o st fre que nt ly
used with the Combimelt process. It is used for both
overmolding and sequential molding processes. The
m ovin g p la t e n o f t h e ma c h i n e i s e q u i ppe d w it h a
rot a r y m od u l e . T h e s t a t i o n a r y mo l d h alf ha s t w o
d iffe ren t m o l d c a v i t i e s , wh i l e t h e mo v i ng mold ha lf
h a s tw o id e n t i c a l c a v i t i e s . A f t e r t h e f i r st inje c t ion
operation in station 1, the rotary table tur ns through
a n an gle of 1 8 0 d e g re e s a n d t r a n sf e r s t he pre for m
to t h e s e c o n d , l a r g e r c a v i t y i n t h e st a t iona r y mold
half. The empty space between the preform and the
c a v ity w a ll i s n o w f i l l e d wi t h t h e s e c o nd ma t e r ia l.
Th e rota r y t a b l e i s r a t e d f o r a l t e r n a t i n g rot a t ion
through an angle of 180 degrees. A special rotary
c ou p lin g p e r m i t s t h e u n re st r i c t e d s u p ply of me dia
to the injection mold. As the rotary table is an integral
part of the injection molding machine, it can be used
for s eve r al m o l d s. R o t a r y t a b l e s a re a v a ila ble w it h
u p t o 4 in d e xi n g p o s i t i o n s .

An id e a l s olu tion f o r t h e p ro d u c t i o n o f l a r g e a nd
esp e c ia lly for long p a r t s, i s t h e u se o f t h e la r ge capacity ENGEL DUO (two platen) injection molding
machine. The machine is used in conjunction with a
rotary module, mounted on a sliding carriage inside
the clamping unit, and an injection unit mounted on
each p la te n .
F or s u c h ap p licat i o n s , t h e c o m b i n a t i o n o f t he
horizontal rotary module and the cube-shaped central
p art of th e in ject i o n mo l d m a k e s b e t t e r u s e of t he
available space between the tie-bars than is possible
w ith a rot a r y t a b l e sy st e m.
What is particularly advantageous about this system
is that t h e t w o in j e c t i o n u n i t s a re m o u n t e d on t he
two opposite platens. This permits a simple design
of th e c e n tr al, m o v i n g p a r t o f t h e mo l d a n d wa iv e s
the n e e d for a c o m p l i c a t e d h o t r u n n e r s y st e m.
Th is s y s t e m is p a r t i c u l a r l y su i t a b l e f o r l a r g e - a re a
p arts w it h in t e gr a l l y m o l d e d se a l s o r g a s k e t s ( e .g.
car w in d ow p a n e s).

tr an s fe r fu n c t i o n s a re i n t e g r a t e d i n t h e mold. This

m old h a lf) . To t h i s e n d , t h e p re f o r m , aft e r be ing
molded in station 1, must be transferred to station
2, ov e r m old e d o n o n e s i d e , ro t a t e d , a nd t he n
overmolded on the other. This is done by means of
a so-called index plate in the mold, which removes
the partially molded part from the cavity, rotates it
a n d re p la c e s i t .

This process is used primarily in cases of application
w h e re c om p os ite i n j e c t i o n m o l d i n g s h a v e t o be
com b in e d w ith aw k wa rd l y si z e d o r sh a p e d i nse r t s
or w h e re th e u s e o f a ro t a r y t a b l e o r i n d e x pla t e
system would necessitate the use of a disproportion ate ly lar ge clam p i n g u n i t .
The transfer system is also used instead of the index
p lat e s y s t e m w h e n t h e p re f o r m c a n n o t b e h eld by
an in d e x p la te b e c a u se o f i t s g e o m e t r y.

from cavity 1 to cavity 2. The transfer operation may
take place either in the same mold, without any need
fo r rot a tion , or b e t we e n t wo a d j a c e n t i n j e c t i on

Vertical injection units are mounted above the
s ta tion a r y p lat e n o n a mo v i n g c a r r i a g e . Whe n

vertical injection units can be readily converted
for co-injection. W ith this in mind, the rails for
the moving carriage are extended towards the
hor izon ta l u n it , p e r mi t t i n g c o n n e c t i o n o f t he
vertical unit with the horizontal unit by means
o f th e s p e c ia l c o -i n j e c t i o n n o z z l e . T h i s c o injection arrangement has proved ideal for use
o n s m a ll an d m e d i u m -si z e d ma c h i n e s .
