TIDE MODELING

DEWA
10.1a

Method
1. Using graphing software. Plot the graph of time against height. Describe the
result.

It shows a wave looking figure that goes up and down in a constant motion.

2. Use your knowledge of functions to develop a function that models the behavior
noted in the graph. Describe any variables, parameters, or constraints for the
model. Explain clearly how you established the value of any parameters.
a. The formula as given
b. Max = maximum height of the graph
c. Min = minimum height of the graph
d. A (amplitude) =
e. The Period =
f. D (vertical shift) =
g.
h. A = = 5.8
i. B = the period in this figure is 12 hours [12 = ]  [B = ]  [B = ]
j. D = = 6.5
k. C = 12

To find the C, we can use the formula by inputting A, which is the amplitude in the result
of the graph:

After inputting the amplitude, we can find the results of C by counting the number of dots
below the horizontal line until the dots above the horizontal line.

To insert the function hand written, it is written

To insert the function in the Graphmatic software it is written

3. Draw a graph of your functions on the same axes as the graph in step 1. How well
does the function fit the data?
The above graph is the graph that has been modeled using the function found. The
functions did not match with the dots.

4. Modify the function to create a better fit. Describe the issues you had to consider.
a. The modification that I made:

b. To find the new function, all I did was trial and error. By doing trial and
error, it is easier to find the new function.
5. Use a resource (GDC or other graphical software) to justify your findings and
explain it.
a. Using the option “curve fit”, we can find that the function now match
almost to perfection with the dots or plots. When not using the curve fit
option, it results in a moderate accuracy, not as perfect as using the option.
Above is the graph that has been applied with the curve fit option.

6. Good sailors will launch their boats on an outgoing tide (that is when the tide is
going out). Use your model to determine the times between which a good sailor
would have launched a boat on 27 December 2003.
a. A good sailor would only set sail for the sea when the tide is in a favorable
height. If the tide was too low, they wouldn’t be able to set sail because
they might hit a coral reef on the bottom and making their boats broke.
Based on the time and tide of the Bay of Fundy, those good sailors would
launch their boat at between 15:00 P.M. when the height of the tide is at
12.3 meters until 05:00 P.M where the tide is at 8.9 meters. During the
night, tides tend to rise, the gravity of the moon also make tides tend to
rise. Meanwhile, during the afternoon, where the moon is gone, the tide
goes down. Also, during the night, the wind is blowing towards the sea
from the land, which could help them cross the sea easier, during the day,
the wind blows towards the land from the sea and this is the reason why
sailors would launch their boats after the afternoon, which is at night till
dawn.
b. Good sailor will launch their boats after the afternoon, so evening till night
till dawn. When the set sail during the night, they would come back to
shore at around 05:00 A.M. during this time, the level of tide is at the
considerable height, which is at 6.5 meters. Also the wind at that time
blows from the sea to land, helping the sailors made it to shore safely and
faster.
7. Find another sample of real life problems where this mathematic modeling might
be used and how it can link to the mathematical modeling.
a. Another example where this mathematical modeling can be applied is the
speed of Internet at dorm. It’s also move dynamically up and down.
Usually the internet is going up or fast around 07.00 A.M until 04.00 PM
because in that time no one is using the internet at dorm, it makes the
internet fast, meanwhile the internet going down or slow is around 5.00
P.M until 10.00 P.M, because in that time all of the people is using the
internet that make the speed of the internet is going slow.
8. The table below lists the tide heights for 28 December 2003. Does your function
fit these data? What modifications are needed? Confirm that your modified model
fits the data.

The above graph is the results of the plotting of the data of 28 December 2003
The above graph shows how the function of has been
applied to the graph. In the graph shown, the function did not fit the data given in
question number eight.

Now, the above graph shows a more accurate function, comparing to the graph shown

before hand, with the applied. The modification I

made to the function is changing all the variables of the function. Thus the function used

above is

9. Explain why you think your method is correct and suggest of any improvement(s)
you might need to complete this work.
a. My method is correct because when using the software, it is easier to
manipulate the graph, and the software makes little mistakes. The software
is accurate in calculating all the equations and values of the data. I also
compared by work to some of my friends. Most of them has the same
answer as mine, although not exactly the same, since I’m using trial and
error to calculate the data, while they use the formula and function.
b. What I need to improve in creating this data and product is to managing
and concentrating my time on it.
