SSC CGL Skill Test


Skill Test, a part of Tier III of the recruitment process under the SSC CGL exam 2016 is
applicable for three of the thirty posts for which selection is being made under this
notification. Both the Skill Tests Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) and Computer
Proficiency Test (CPT) are of qualifying nature. This implies that the selected
candidates need to only clear a minimum standard for the test. Its marks are not included
in generating the final merit list, however, failing to qualify the Skill Test will lead to
your disqualification even if you have topped the merit list on the basis of marks in the
written exams Tier I and Tier II of the recruitment process. Thus, you should definitely
take this into account while making your post preference priority list. If you are
confident of clearing these, then you should place the relevant posts higher on the
priority, else lower. These tests are conducted by the Regional offices of SSC, for
candidates who clear the minimum cut offs on the basis of both Tier I and Tier II written
exam. The final merit list only comprises of candidates who manage to clear these Skill
Tests. Further details on these are as below:

Data Entry Speed Test (DEST)


Posts applicable for : Tax Assistant, Central Excise (CBEC), (Post code : @) and
Tax Assistant, (Income Tax) (CBDT), (Post code : Z). Both these are Group C
posts.
Minimum standard : You will need to make a minimum of 2000 (two thousand)
key depressions in 15 (fifteen) minutes to qualify.
Computers, including keyboard, will be provided by the Regional office at the
decided venue.
Exemptions : only OH candidates who have applied for the post of Tax Assistant
in CBDT (post code Z) are exempted for appearing in the DEST. Also, VH
candidates are allowed an extra time of 5 minutes over the 15 minute duration to
complete the DEST. And those VH candidates who applied for scribe in written
examination can be provided with a passage reader to aid them in DEST.

Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)


Posts applicable for : the CPT is only applicable for candidates applying to the
post of Assistant Section Officer in CSS (Central Secretariat Services), post code :
A. This is a Group B post.
Test syllabus : the CPT comprises of three modules Word processing or MS
Word, Spread Sheet or MS Excel, and Generation of Slides or MS Powerpoint.
Thus, this is a complete test on the MS Office stack of software.
Exemptions : None of the categories shall be provided an exemptions from CPT.
