Vol. XL, No. 2, Spring, 1995

Dear friends,

''The Great Hanshin Earthquake killed more than 5,300, injured nearly 27,000
3rid left 300,000 home less." Japan Times Weekly, Mar. 27- April 2nd. We are so
thankful to report that none of the seven Christian churches nor Osaka Bible

Seminary suffered much damage to their buildings. Nor were any of their members

killed or seriously injured. However nineteen families were affected by either

the loss of jobs or by losing their homes. Generous offerings were given from
all over Japan and other countries. Volunteers also came from all over Japan
and from abroad. TIM TURNER, along with other Tokyo preachers went to serve on
two different occasions. Our granddaughter, KARIS, and two ladies from the Sannobara Church went for four days. Karis assisted at Megumi Church in Takarasuka
by preparing the temporary bath at the entrance of the church. NATSUKI and her
AUNT YUKIE led community children to the amusement park each day. Their even
ings were spent in preparing hot meals for all in need.
Rumor has it that the road which is planned for behind the Machida Church

building will not be built until 1996 or 1997. However, Tim tells us that bal
last and fill dirt are being hauled in and dumped in the low places at thie
time. Since the Japanese government economists have been speaking of 'recession'
for some time, my guess is that the earthquake in Kobe will cause an additional
slowdown in new road construction and other projects.

The new college year in Japan begins in early April.

Greetings from the Faui Pratt and Tim Turner tanitiies of Central Japan
Christian Mission.

Because Central Japan Christian Mission is one Mission

dedicated to spreading the Gospel in Japan, the laembers ol CJCM have

decided to begin printing a joint quarterly newsletter so that all ol our
friends and supporters can know what Is going on as a whole.
Up until now,
the Pratt family and the Turner family have
been printing separate news
letters and sending them to their respective friends and supporters. Prom
now on we want everyone to know of both families and the work that they are
doing.

Paul and Kathleen Pratt and family arrived in Japan in 1958 to begin
full-time work in Japan.
They were involved in Church planting, student

evangelism, and literature distributing. The last 27 years of their

ministry were spent in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, working with the
Sannobara Church and with student evangelism.
They recently "retired" from
the field

in 1993 due to health concerns.

Both are

tine now and involved

in promoting the work in Japan as well as recruiting future workers for

mission service to Japan.
They presently live in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tim and Lisa Turner and family began mission work in Japan in 1969 and

settled in Machida City, Tokyo, where the Mark Pratt family had established
a Church in 1981.
The Turner family is involved with the Machida Church of
Christ, where Tim preaches, and a campus ministry with Gbirin University.
They also teach at American Christian College and work with children.

Ve hope that through these combined newsletters that you will be able
to be more informed of the families involved in Central Japan
Christian
Mission as well as the work of the mission.
We also hope that you will be

able to pray more specifically for the needs of the work and the mission,
it is our prayer that through these newsletters that you will become more
interested in missions and that
you will become personally involved in

spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world. May God bless
you all.

TURNERS AND PRATTS TO EXCHANGE PLACES

In December, 1995, the Turner family is planning to take a short

furlough back to the U.S.
In order that this can be done, the Pratts have
decided to take their place while they are gone.
The Pratts will arrive in
Japan the end of November and the Turner family will leave the first part

of December.

Tim will return to Japan in the middle of March, 199b j^hiie

the Pratts will return to Ohio around that time.

Please be in prayer for
both families as they travel and as they make the necessary preparations
and adjustments.
The Turner family will make their home in Georgia/Florida

while they are back.

If you are interested in hearing about the work in
Japan, please contact Paul Pratt or Tim Turner at the addresses above.

Campus Ministry

April is the beginning of the sch|Ool year in Japan and with it our
classes at the schools that we teach at began. Tim and Dave Cole Ca
Christian Church missionary) started up a new year at Obirin Junior
College
They each teach 3 English Bible classes a week.
Tim teaches one

on Tuesday and two on Wednesday.

Davej teaches 3 on Wednesday.

Although

the classes are elective classes, they teach close to 170 students with
very few being Christians or even knowing much about Christianity.
It is
an exciting opportunity to share for the first time what Christianity is

about and who Jesus Christ is.

This year, Tim was asked to help begin an English chapel service once
a week.
They have chapel services in Japanese but none in English and with
the increase of
exchange students and Japanese interested in English it
seemed a good opportunity.
The first iterra has had a small start with only

about 20 in attendance, but we hope to| continue

increase

attendance

it through the fall and

and involvement.

Tim is also the sponsor of the Obirin

group that meets together on campus.

Christian

Club, a Christian

Two freshman have joined the club and

several others are coming to the Bible studies.

A new year at American Christian bollege also started up in April.

Tim goes downtown Tokyo to teach once a week on Mondays.

Three new
students entered the school in April and the total is at 6 now.
Tim taught
a listening/speaking class,

a writing class,

a Christian literature class,

and the letters of the New Testament cjlass during the spring term.

Lisa continues to teach English at Obirin Kindergarten and Eunike

(Eunice) Preschool.

She goes to Eunike on Wednesdays for an hour and then

to Obirin on Fridays for an hour.

She is free to use the Bible at both of

these schools and teaches some English! Bible songs.

Tim and Lisa also teach some Engilish classes during the week to some

women and men.

Although they have not made much headway in evangelism with
these classes, several have shown interest and ask questions about the
Bible and about

life.

Children's Engilah/Blble Classes

Until the end of March, Karis directed the children's classes and did

a super job organizing and leading them. They stopped for a while during
April and May because Lisa and Tim were busy and they knew that Karis would
be leaving soon. After thinking about It, we decided to start the classes

back up because we wanted to teach the Bible to children at a young age and
we also wanted to minister to the parents. So at the end of May we started
back up but this time only one day a week and only two classes.

Ve have 30

kids from 1st grade to 6th grade and it is very enjoyable.

Machida

Church

of

Christ

The Machida Church of Christ has continued to see growth this year.
1994 had an average Sunday attendance of 26 while this year so far has seen
average attendance of 30.

Last year we

baptism, Akemi Sorimachi, a young

mother, and one transfer of membership, a
college graduate. This year tne Church
has had 4 transfers and several who are at

point where they are ready to make

decisions for Jesus.
Ve praise God for tne
additions that have

been made and for tne

^'^cLi'tiohs that God will provide.

Tim continues to preach on Sundays, lead
a Sunday morning Bible study, and a i'hursday
morning ladies Bible study.
The Church
continues to see visitors on ;3unday and
people who are interested in what Jesus can

offer.

The Japanese people are searching

for meaning and we need to offer them tne

true life that only Jesus can give.

holds Bazaar

As a way of introducing the Church to the people in the community ana

a way to raise some money for the victims of the Kobe earthquake, the
ladies of the Church decided to hold a Bazaar/Flea Market (.May 2V J and
invite the community. One of the ladies helped to organize everything and
members donated things to sell. We couldn't get an accurate count but
close to lOU people entered the building. We put a letter from the church
and a tract in every bag and pray that the people will see that we are nere
and that we are interested in helping people. Through the bazaar, tne
church raised over SbOO to send to Kobe.
Church Calls Associate MTnister

Because of the recent growth in the Church, Tim has been discussing
with some of the Church members about calling a Japanese minister to help
with the work.
In the spring we learned about a senior at Usaka Bible
Seminary, Shingo Tsuda. who will graduate in March of 1996 and who is

looking to serve somewhere. He grew up in the Mejirodai Church wnere

Harold Sims ministers and was a leader in the youth activities here in
Tokyo during his high school and university days. Tim talked to him. he
came and visited the Church two times, and in June we invitea him to come

as Associate Minister next year. He graciously accepted the invitation and

we are looking forward to his coming and expecting great things for xhe
Churcn in the years to come.
