Introduction
Twenty three (23) soot blowers are being provided for the recovery boiler. These soot blowers are provided with
a single motor for both rotary and traverse motions. These soot blowers can be controlled from the following
locations:

Soot Blower (Operation from DCS)

Local Pushbutton Stations (LPBS)

Control from DCS

Provision shall be made for Individual Manual Operation as well as Automatic Sequence Control (ASC) with
provision for bypassing any blower. (Local/Remote selection shall be in DCS). Location of Blowers, indications
/ controls and interlocks will be shown in the MIMICS for soot blower operation in DCS.
Control from Local Pushbutton Stations (LPBS)
Provision shall be made for Individual Manual Operation
Operation from DCS
Pre-start Permissive:
For Soot Blowers:

No Trip Condition Exist for Forward Operation (from MCC overload relay)

No Trip Condition Exist for Reverse Operation (from MCC overload relay)

Remote Operation Selected (from DCS)

For Soot Blowing Steam Isolation Control Valve (HV-5469-M)

No Trip Condition Exist (from MCC overload relay)

Remote Operation Selected (from DCS)

Blowers in Home Position:

All blowers must be in Home Position for carrying out the sequence operation.
Manual Operation:

All blowers must be in Home Position for carrying out the manual operation.

Before starting up the blowing operation the Steam Isolation Valve (542-HV-5469M) should be closed.

Close the steam Isolation Valve (542-HV-5469M) and then open Vaccum Breaker Valve (542-HV5472). After 1 minute time interval, open the Drain Control Valve (542-HV-5461M) for Sootblowers 1 to 12 (Boiler Bank & Economiser Areas) & (542-HV-5475M) for Sootblowers - 13 to 23 (superheater
Areas) and close the Vaccum Breaker Valve (542-HV-5472).

542-PIC-5471 controller shall be set to auto mode and the set point shall be assigned to 40kg/cm 2.If the
pressure exceeds 41kg/cm2 and persist for 5 seconds (tentative) then the pressure controller output will
be set to zero, then will be closed.

Open the Steam Isolation valve (542-HV-5469M) slowly. After 1 minute time interval if the condensate
drain temperature is more than the preset value (480C) then close the condensate drain Valve. Else
reset the process and start again.

Then if steam pressure (542-PSL-5474) is not low, start the seal air fan and operate the soot blowers
individually.

After the completion of blowing operation, open the Drain Control Valve (542-HV-5461M) & (542HV-5475M) & the Vacuum Breaker Valve (542-HV-5472) for draining.

Sequence Operation:
Sequence of Operation includes
Predefined Sequence:

In predefined sequence opening of condensate drain control valve, closing of condensate drain control
valve after ensuring adequate condensate drain temperature and insertion and retrieval of all the soot
blowers that are selected for sequence operation shall be carried out in a sequential manner. In
predefined sequence all the soot blowers will operate one by one.

Soot blowers can be retracted to home position automatically once getting an signal from the
corresponding End position limit switch or the forced retract timer contact (from MCC).

User defined Sequence:

In user defined sequence operation opening of condensate drain control valve, closing of condensate
drain control valve and after ensuring adequate condensate drain temperature and insertion and
retrieval of soot blowers that are selected for sequence operation shall be carried out in a sequential
manner. By selecting the soot blowers in the user defined sequence (from DCS), the operator can
decide which blowers to be included in sequence and which are to be bypassed .Operator can also
select the sootblowers based on the areas as
Sootblowers 1 to 12 in Boiler Bank & Economiser Area.
Sootblowers 13 to 23 in Superheater Area.

Soot blowers can be retracted to home position automatically once getting an signal from the
corresponding End position Limit switch or Timer contact (from MCC).

Fault Monitoring:

The opening and closing operation of steam isolation valve, opening and closing of condensate drain
control valve, forward and retract operations of all the blowers shall be monitored and appropriate
indication/alarms shall be generated to notify the operator the success or failure of each operation.

If there is a fault during retract operation of any of the blowers, provision shall be made to
automatically force retract the blower to home position.

The sequence operation shall be stopped after the affected blower is brought to home position. The
operator can then proceed the sequence further by pressing reset PB (from DCS).

Failure of auto retract operation shall also be annunciated so that the operator can take appropriate
action to manually bring the blower to home position.
