From PI's Desk

Dear Readers,
Welcome to the first official COE-CNDS newsletter. The issue highlights the goals,
resources and ongoing research activities at the COE-CNDS, VJTI, Mumbai. The
motivation behind releasing a regular and completely community driven newsletter is to
provide a communication channel between the research group at the COE-CNDS and the
academic world, other research groups and laboratories, industries and the researchers of
the future.
This issue contains information on the multidisciplinary span of the research goals,
dedicated laboratory facilities and equipment available with the COE-CNDS. The industryinstitute interaction reserves prime importance for us. We as a group are very much
involved with the industry oriented projects, beneficial for both the development of our
students as well as keeping us at par with the latest research activities happening across
the globe.
In Indian context, giving opportunities to budding engineers and inspiring them to pursue
their careers in engineering and sciences by working on contemporary research problems
is one of the prime goal of COE-CNDS.
We, the COE-CNDS community present to you this issue with utmost gratitude.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Faruk A. S. Kazi
(PI & Coordinator, CoE-CNDS),

engineering branches. Main areas and application domains include
complex power grid/smart grid modeled as cyber physical system
(CPS), nonlinear dynamics & transient stability of electrical pulse
power & plasma systems, hybrid energy management systems for
clean renewable energy & nonlinear vibration analysis.
The proposed CoE is aimed at developing a rigorous and
unified framework for both theoretical and applied research in the area
of complex and nonlinear dynamical systems by interconnecting
scattered groups to create critical mass and complementarity.
Following are the key objectives:
i. To foster in both ways fundamental studies and applications by
collaborative research.
ii. To develop a basis for a unified framework harnessing complex and
nonlinear systems.
iii. To motivate and integrate multi-disciplinary approaches to complex
problems.
iv. To contribute in nation's growth - technologically & socially by
synthesising the obtained results and methodologies into unified
strategies, criteria and procedures for design of new devices and
processes.
v. Facilitate the interchange of scientific results and ideas between
various institutes, industries and research organizations within and
outside India.
vi. Promote use of open-source software in fundamental research
areas.

Introduction to Geometric
Nonlinear Control Theory and
Applications
8 March to 13 March 2014

Objectives:
Exposure to nonlinear dynamics.
Understand geometric aspects of
nonlinear control.
Understand the role of energy
and the interconnections
between subsystems.
Understand modeling issues in
complex systems and cyberphysical systems.
Covered the concepts of
controllability, observability,
decoupling and equivalence in
the context of nonlinear control
system.
It introduced Geometric tools
like Lie Brackets, Distributions
and Codistribution, Integral
Manifolds and Frobenius
Theorem.
No t o ptimiz e d f o r high quality printing o r digital distributio n

The aim of the mini-course was two-fold. In

the first part we introduced basic notions,
tools, and results of geometric control theory.
We discussed the concepts of controllability,
observability, decoupling, and equivalence in
the context of nonlinear control systems. We
recalled and/or introduced geometric tools on
which the theory was based (Lie brackets,
distributions and co-distributions, integral
manifolds, Frobenius theorem etc.). We also
presented more recent results concerning
equivalence of control systems under statespace equivalence, feedback equivalence, and
dynamic equivalence. In particular, we
discussed feedback linearization, equivalence
of control-linear systems to the chained forms
(and their applications to nonholonomic
systems), flatness, and describe control
systems that admit a mechanical structure.
Throughout the mini-course we emphasized
the geometric character of nonlinear control
theory and its applications to various control
synthesis problems (stabilization, tracking,
nonlinear observers). We illustrated the course
by physical, mainly mechanical, examples.
