Pro-feminist

men
accept that these
issues are caused
by a system that
privileges men,
which needs to be
addressed in order
to help solve these
problems.

Pro-feminist mens
movement building:
reaches out to male
allies willing to end sexism
and homophobia, both of
which teach that
manhood should be
nothing like womanhood,
leading men to seek
refuge in a macho,
heterosexual ideal despite
the stigma, shame and
fears of harm it creates
among men who dont
measure up, regardless of
their sexuality. (Hosein

Pro-feminism sets
men and boys
free

An action brought to you by

students of GEND2013.

Held Thursday 7th April at

the University of the West
Indies, St. Augustine

Who we are:

Our message?

We are a pro-feminist
group of students who
want to show that anyone
can take steps towards
social change.
Why pro-feminist?
As stated by bell hooks (2000):

Feminist masculinity
aims to foster a vision of
masculinity where selfesteem and self-love of
one's unique being
forms the basis of
identity.
Patriarchy teaches men
that masculinity is
affirmed through the
ability to dominate
others.
This means that
hegemonic masculine
ideals are enforced for
men; these ideals, due to
factors such as class, race,
or age are impossible for
all men to access at all
times.

What does it take to be a

pro-feminist man?

Pro-feminism
sets boys and
men free.

Pro-feminist men
understand that women, as
a group, overwhelmingly
suffer from inequality and
injustice based on their
gender.
Pro-feminist men also
accept their institutional
privilege and that the
dominant model of ideal
masculinity is harmful to
both men and women.

According to Michael Flood

(2009):
So, what makes a man profeminist?
Men who actively support
gender justice and equality
are pro-feminist.

Does pro-feminist mean antimale?

No, but it does mean
that they are against
sexism and patriarchy.

What do pro-feminist men do?

Some take part in activism, like
building or joining pro-feminist
mens movements, and some
simply attempt to be more
egalitarian within their own
lives.

How does being pro-feminist

help men?
Pro-feminist men
accept that there are
many legitimate areas
of concern for men,
such as bullying, the
stigma attached to male
rape victims and mens
health and education.
