This revision of this Part of this British Standard was prepared under the
direction of the Power Electrical Engineering Standards Committee and
supersedes the 1973 edition which is now withdrawn.
The 1973 edition applied to rigid PVC conduit, fittings and components. It
specified the requirements for components not of tubular form, for example,
boxes, covers and reducers. Details were also given of the requirements for rigid
conduits other than those specified in Part 1, which gives the requirements for
conduit fittings of tubular form, using metric dimensions, comprising bends and
couplers, manufactured from PVC.
The title and contents of this edition of Part 5 have been revised to include
products made from any suitable insulating material. The requirements for
components not of tubular form, for example, circular fittings and covers, and
reducers, are specified and details are also given of the requirements for rigid
conduits other than those specified in Part 1.
The format of this edition follows that of those IEC Publications of similar content
except that it is in the form of a stand alone specification and includes standard
sheets giving dimensions (metric) of conduits, couplers, bends and other fittings.
As well as revising existing clauses in the 1973 edition a new clause has been
added covering insulating characteristics.
Other Parts of this standard are:
Part 1:1970 Rigid PVC conduits and conduit fittings. Metric units;
Part 2:1970 Rigid PVC conduits and conduit fittings. Imperial units;
Part 3:1971 Pliable corrugated, plain and reinforced conduits of self
extinguishing plastics material.

A further Part, Part 4, is under consideration.

1 Scope
This Part of this British Standard specifies requirements for components not of tubular form, for example
circular fittings and covers, and reducers. Details are also given of the requirements for rigid conduits other
than those specified in Part 1.

2 General requirements
2.1 Conduit, fittings and components shall be so designed and constructed that they ensure reliable
mechanical protection to the cables contained therein, and they shall withstand the stresses likely to occur
during transport, storage and installation.
Compliance with the requirements of the standard shall be checked by carrying out all the tests specified.
2.2 There are no requirements for dimensions of conduit fittings and components.
NOTE Preferred dimensions for different sizes of conduit fittings and components are given in the standard sheets as listed below.

3 General conditions for tests

NOTE The applicant, when submitting the first set of samples, may also submit the additional set of samples of fittings or
components that may be wanted should one sample fail. The testing station will then, without further request, test the additional
samples and will only reject if a further failure occurs. If the additional set of samples of conduit, fittings or components is not
submitted at the same time, a failure of one sample will entail a rejection by the testing station.

4 Classification

3.1 The tests shall be carried out at an ambient temperature of 20 5 C.


3.2 Each test shall be made on three fresh samples.
3.3 If more than one sample fails in any one of the tests, conduits, fittings and components shall be deemed
not to comply with the requirements of this standard. If one sample fails in a test, that test and those
preceding, which may have influenced the result of that test, shall be repeated on another set of samples
of the number specified in 3.2, all of which shall then satisfy the requirements of the repeated tests.

Rigid conduit and fittings complying with this standard are suitable for installation, storage or transport
at temperatures not normally below 5 C.
Fittings and components in accordance with standard sheets 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9 are suitable for use at a
temperature of up to 60 C and shall be classified according to their maximum working temperature.
Fittings in accordance with standard sheets 6, 7 and 10 shall be classified according to their maximum
working temperature and suspended load as assigned by the manufacturer.
NOTE Suggested classifications for test working levels are 3 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg at 60 C, 90 C and 120 C.

5 Marking
Conduit, fittings and components shall be marked with the makers name or trade mark.
Fittings in accordance with standard sheets 6, 7 and 10 shall also be marked with a classification code
giving the maximum working temperature in degrees Celsius, and the suspended load in kilograms.
Example, 60/3 kg shows that the fitting is suitable for a maximum working temperature of 60 C, and a
suspended load of 3 kg.
Marking shall be indelible and easily legible.

Marking shall be checked by inspection and by rubbing the marking by hand for 15 s with a piece of cloth
soaked with water and again for 15 s with a piece of cloth soaked in petroleum spirit.
NOTE 1 Marking may be applied by stamping, printing, paper stickers or water transfers.
NOTE 2 Except for fittings in accordance with standard sheets 6, 7,and 10, the marking may be applied to the inside or to the
outside of the fitting or component. Where marking of the fitting or component is not practicable, the marking may be applied to the
package.

6.1 Conduit, fittings and components shall be made of insulating material.


Compliance shall be checked by inspection and by the tests given in clauses 7, 8, 9 and 10.
6.2 The interior and ends of conduits, fittings and components shall be smooth and free from burrs.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection.
6.3 Conduit entries of fittings and components shall be so designed that a reliable joint can be made
between the appropriate circular conduit and the fitting or components.
6.4 Screws used for attaching components or covers to conduit fittings shall not cause damage to cable
insulation.
NOTE

Conformity with the details of the relevant standard sheets ensures compliance with the requirements of 6.3 and 6.4.

6.5 The lugs and fixing threads of fittings detailed in standard sheets 6, 7 and 10 shall have adequate
mechanical strength. Fixing threads of these fittings shall have a minimum threaded length of 8 mm in the
plastics material. Metal inserts, when provided, shall have sufficient thickness to allow a threaded
engagement of not less than three full threads.
Compliance shall be checked by the tests described in 7.2.

7 Mechanical properties of fittings and components


7.1 Requirement. The thread shall remain in serviceable condition. Compliance shall be checked by the
tests specified in 7.2 and 7.3.
7.2 Suspended load test. Place a rigid metal plate across the front of the fittings or components with a
clearance of 2.5 mm min between the entire top face of the lug and the rear of the plate. Insert an M4 screw
through the plate for the specified minimum engagement and tighten it, once only, with a minimum torque
of 0.4 N m.
Mount fittings specified in standard sheets 6, 7 and 10 in an oven using at least two screws. Assemble a
suitable plate, having dimensions equal to the outside dimensions of the fitting, to the front of the fitting.
Suspend a load of mass 3 kg centrally from the plate. Switch on the oven and maintain the temperature at
the classification temperature for a period of 48 h. At the end of this period there shall be no appreciable
distortion of the fitting.
Maintain the temperature of the oven at this value for a further 48 h.
At the end of this period, ensure that the load is still supported. Any distortion of the fitting shall be
ignored.
7.3 Safety on impact test
7.3.1 Test the fittings and components other than those of non-circular conduit using the apparatus shown
in Figure 1. The pendulum consists of a steel tube suspended in such a way that it swings only in a vertical
plane. A hammer of mass 0.15 kg is rigidly fixed to the lower end with its axis 1 m from the axis of
suspension. The striking element is a hemispherical face made of hard wood (hornbeam or European ash)
and having a radius of 10 mm. The design of the apparatus is such that a force between 1.9 N and 2.0 N
has to be applied to the face of the hammer to maintain the pendulum in a horizontal position.
7.3.2 The support for the sample is a sheet of plywood 8 mm thick and 240 mm square without any metallic
backplate. The apparatus is fixed to a solid wall of brick, stone, concrete or the like.
7.3.3 The support of the sample is such that the sample can be placed so that the point of impact lies in the
vertical plane containing the suspension axis of the pendulum. The sample can be turned about an axis
perpendicular to the support and also about a vertical axis; the sample can be moved horizontally and
vertically.
7.3.4 Mount the fittings and components on the support which is described in 7.3.2.

6 Construction

7.3.5 Place the sample so that the point of impact lies in the vertical plane containing the suspension axis
of the pendulum. For all tests, drop the hammer from a height of 150 mm measured vertically between the
point of impact on the sample and the face of the hammer at the point of release.
Apply ten blows to points evenly distributed over the sample. For circular fittings ensure that none of the
blows are applied within 5 mm of any knockout.
7.3.6 A sample shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of this test even though, during the test,
cracks may appear and small pieces may become detached, provided that:
a) for circular fittings and inspection fittings, the detachment of such pieces does not permit any access
to the interior of the fitting and the cover can be removed and replaced;
b) for couplers and reducers, the protection of the cable is not impaired.

8 Resistance to heat

8.1 Requirement. Conduits, fittings and components shall be resistant to heat. Compliance shall be
checked by the ball pressure test specified in 8.2. The diameter of the impression made by the steel ball
shall not exceed 2 mm.
8.2 Ball-pressure test. Use the apparatus shown in Figure 2. Prepare a suitable sample from three like
fittings or components. Place one sample so prepared in the horizontal position on a steel support, as shown
in Figure 2, the support and the sample being placed in a heating cabinet at a temperature equal to the
classification temperature.
As soon as the support and the sample have attained the temperature specified, press a steel ball of 5 mm
diameter against the inner surface of the sample by a force of 20 N.
After 1 h, remove the ball and take the sample out of the heating cabinet. When the sample has attained
room temperature, measure the diameter of the impression made by the ball.

9 Resistance to burning
9.1 Requirement. Conduits, fittings and components shall be self-extinguishing. Compliance shall be
checked by the test specified in 9.2. If the sample burns, it shall do so slowly and the burning shall not
spread appreciably; any flame shall have died out in less than 30 s after removal of the burner.
9.2 Test
9.2.1 General. The test shall be made on three samples in still air with a Bunsen burner, having a nozzle
with an internal diameter of 9 mm. The gas used for the test shall be such that with the dimension of the
flame specified in 9.2.2, the energy produced by the burner is 900 30 W.
9.2.2 Procedure. While the burner is in the vertical position, adjust the flame so that its overall length
is 100 mm and the length of the inner blue cone is 50 mm. Then support the burner so that its axis is at an
angle of 45 to the vertical.
Hold the sample vertically in such a position that the tip of the inner cone of the flame touches the surface
of the sample at a distance of approximately 100 mm from its lower end.
Hold the sample in the flame for 1 min.

10 Insulating characteristics
10.1 Requirements. Conduit and fittings shall have an adequate electrical insulating strength and
insulation resistance. Compliance shall be checked for the conduit by the tests specified in 10.2 and 10.3,
and for the fittings by the tests specified in 10.4 and 10.5. No breakdown shall occur during the tests.
After the tests of 10.3 and 10.5 the insulation resistance of fittings shall be not less than 100 M7.
10.2 Electrical insulating strength test for conduit.
NOTE

The ends of the samples are provided with at least 10 mm of conductive coating.

Bend and immerse the samples over a length of 1 m in water at a temperature of 20 5 C, keeping a
length of approximately 100 mm at each end above the water level. Pour water into the sample until the
levels inside and outside are approximately the same, and immerse an electrode in water inside the sample,
and also in the water outside. The test arrangement is illustrated in Figure 3.
After 24 h apply a voltage of 2 000 V, of substantially sine-wave form and having a frequency of 50 Hz,
for 15 min between the electrodes.

10.3 Insulation resistance test for conduit. After carrying out the test specified in 10.2 immerse the
samples, as described in 10.2, in water maintained at a temperature of 60 2 C and again place the
electrodes in position.
After 2h determine the insulation resistance of each sample by applying a d.c. voltage of
approximately 500 V between the electrodes, the conductive coatings being also connected to the voltage
source but not included in the measuring circuit. Make the measurement 1 min after application of the
voltage.
10.4 Electrical insulating strength test for fittings. Fit all covers in the manner prescribed by the
manufacturer, except that the screws shall be of insulating material.
Close all conduit entries except one with a plug of an insulating material. One of the plugs shall allow two
separate cables to penetrate 25 mm inside the sample, 12.5 mm of the cables within the sample being
without insulation, the ends of the cables being spread so that there is a distance of 12.5 mm between them.
Fill the inside of the sample with spheroidal metal objects of a maximum size of 2.5 mm, and close the
remaining entry.
Place the sample in a container completely enclosing it by spheroidal metal objects of a maximum size
of 2.5 mm.
Check the conductivity of the metal objects within the sample by measuring the resistance between the two
cables which have penetrated the sample, and measure it by applying a d.c. voltage of approximately 500 V
from a current limited device (maximum current 10 mA) between them. Ensure that resistance measured
is less than 10 7.
Immerse an electrode in the metal objects external to the sample, and apply a voltage of 2 500 V, of
substantially sine-wave form and having a frequency of 50 Hz, for 15 min between the electrode and the
cables.
10.5 Insulation resistance test for fittings. Measure the insulation resistance of each sample at the
classification temperature by applying a d.c. voltage of approximately 500 V between the electrode and the
cables.
Make the measurement 1 min after the application of the voltage.
