BS 5000-50:1982

This British Standard, which has been prepared under the direction of the Power
Electrical Engineering Standards Committee, forms a Part of BS 5000 which,
together with BS 4999 General requirements for rotating electrical machines,
will eventually contain a comprehensive series of British Standards for rotating
electrical machines.
This Part of BS 5000 is identical with IEC Publication 681-1:1980 Dimensions of
small power motors for definite purpose application. Part 1 Oil burner motors,
published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
A list of the contents of BS 5000 showing all the Parts envisaged in the
foreseeable future is given in the general introduction and index which will be
brought up to date as new Parts are published. The contents of BS 4999 are given
in a separate index and introduction to that standard.
Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has
been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without
deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those
used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following.
The comma has been used as a decimal marker in Table II, Table III and
Table IV. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the
baseline as the decimal marker.

BS 4500 ISO limits and fits

Part 1:1969 General, tolerances and deviations
(Technically equivalent)

The Technical Committee has reviewed the provisions of ISO 273, to which
reference is made in the text, and has decided that they are acceptable for use in
conjunction with this standard; BS 4186:1967 is a related British Standard.
NOTE Textual error. In Table II, in the subheading to the final column, mimimum should be read
as minimum.

A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.

Summary of pages
This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii,
pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover.
This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had
amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the
inside front cover.

1 Scope
This standard is applicable to a.c. induction type
small power oil burner motors for voltages up
to 500 V, 50 Hz and 60 Hz. These motors are
primarily designed for single-phase supplies but
motors for three-phase supplies are also covered by
this standard.
Shaft dimensions listed in this standard are for
single-shaft extension at the flange end of the
motor.
NOTE No standard dimensions have yet been specified for a
possible opposite end-shaft extension for driving the pump from
that end.

2 Object
To specify dimensions for small power motors
intended for driving oil burners.

3 Types of mounting
Two types of mounting are defined, each with two
different possibilities:
a) two-lug mounting:
Group A: applies to inch (NEMA M and N)
flanges and one metric flange with normal
location of the flange face (see Figure 1,
page 5).
Group B: applies to inch (NEMA M) flange
and metric flange with the mounting face set
back from the end of the shaft to give a shorter
projection of the motor (see Figure 2, page 5).
b) four-hole flange mounting:
Group C: applies to two metric flanges with
normal location of the mounting face
(see Figure 3, page 6).
Group D: as for group C but with the
mounting face set back from the end of the
shaft to give a shorter projection of the motor
(see Figure 4, page 6).
Alternative shaft extension lengths are specified in
each group A, B, C and D, to allow for the pump to
be driven at the same end as the fan or at the
opposite end of the motor.

Thickness of fixing flange for groups C

and D motors.
M
Pitch circle diameter of fixing holes.
N
Diameter of spigot.
P
Maximum diametral dimension of flange
(over lugs for two-lug mounting, where
applicable).
PA
Outside diameter of the circular outline
of flange (lugs not included) for two-lug
mounting.
R
Distance from mounting face of flange to
the inner end of the useful length of shaft
extension.
E + R Distance from mounting face of flange to
end of shaft extension.
S
Diameter of clearance holes in flange.
T
Depth of spigot.
X
Maximum projection of motor end shield
from face of mounting flange.
Y
Maximum diameter of projection of motor
end shield beyond face of mounting flange.

BS 5000-50:1982

5 Designation of motors
Motors manufactured in accordance with this
standard shall bear the appropriate flange number
denoting the pitch circle diameter of the fixing holes,
in millimetres, preceded by the letters:
S: denoting the small power series for motors, and
FF: denoting a flange with clearance holes.
This designation shall also include a suffix letter
followed by two digits, in accordance with the
following:
The suffix letter denotes the type of flange and
the flange face location (see Clause 3):
letter A or B for two-lug mounting,
letter C or D for four-hole flange mounting.
The first digit denotes the shaft diameter and
the second the distance from the shaft end to the
flange face, in accordance with the indications
given in Table I.

NOTE The millimetre/inch alternatives shown at four places

in this table are interchangeable in practice although the
equivalence is not exact.

Example: a group A motor with M

diameter 184 mm (7.25 in) with a shaft 12.7 mm
dia. (0.5 in) and dimension E + R equal
to 57 mm (2.25 in) shall be designated: SFF184A16.

6 Position of lead outlet

6.1 For two-lug mounting motors, the lead outlet
shall be on the centre line and on the left-hand side
facing the drive end (see Figure 1, page 5):
a) at the non-drive end (as the preferred position)
or
b) at the drive end, as an alternative.
6.2 For four-hole flange mounting motors, no
requirement is specified.

7 Standard dimensions

7.1.1 Table II shows three sets of dimensions in inch

units. Two for two different flange diameters called
group A, both with alternative shaft extension
lengths:
a) in line with American practice, and
b) in line with European practice, and a third
with a flange similar to the smaller of the group
A units, but with a type b) shaft extension and
also larger E + R dimension, called group B.
7.1.2 Table III shows five sets of fixing dimensions
divided into two basic groups A and B in metric
dimensions, each set with alternative shaft
extension lengths:
c) for driving both fan and pump,
d) for driving fan only.
Group A shows three different flange diameters
with an alternative shaft diameter for the smallest
flange.
In each c) or d) design, there is a fixed E + R
dimension for all three where a common shaft
diameter occurs.
Group B shows the two smaller flange diameters as
in group A but with larger E + R dimensions for a
given shaft diameter.
7.2 Standard dimensions for four-hole flange
mounting oil burner motors are shown in Table IV,
page 4.
Table IV shows four sets of dimensions divided into
two basic groups C and D, in metric dimensions,
each set with alternative shaft extension lengths:
c) for driving both fan and pump,
d) for driving fan only.
Group C shows two different flange diameters each
with a common E + R dimension for a given shaft
diameter.
Group D shows the same two flange diameters each
with a larger E + R dimension for a given shaft
diameter than in group C.

7.1 The standard dimensions for two-lug mounted

oil burner motors are shown in Table II and
Table III, page 3.
