1. (a) Explain about main design considerations for touch tone signaling?
(b) If the signal input to an amplifier is 0 dBm, what is the power output in Mw
if the gain of the amplifier is 20dB. [10+6]
2. (a) Obtain blocking probability of a three stage space division switching network?
(b) Given that MTBF = 2000hrs and MTTR= 4hrs, calculate the availability and
unavailability figures for single and dual processor systems? [8+8]
3. (a) What are the major components of telecommunication network? Explain in
detail about subscriber loop systems.
(b) An exchange uses a -40 V battery to derive subscriber lines. A resistance
of 250Ω is placed in series with the battery to protect it from short circuits.
The subscribers are required to use a standard telephone set which offers a
d.c. resistance of 50Ω. The microphone requires 23mA for proper functioning.
Determine the farthest distance from the exchange at which a subscriber can
be located if 26 AWG conductor is used. [8+8]
4. (a) Describe typical telephone traffic pattern on a working day?
(b) An exchange serves 2000 subscribers. If the average BHCA is 10,000 and the
CCR is 60�, Calculate the busy hour calling rate. [8+8]

4. (a) Compare inchannel and common channel signaling schemes.
(b) A PCM system uses a multiframe structure with 18 frames. One time slot is
Dedicated for signaling and synchronisation in each frame comprising 32 time
Slots. Four bits are dedicated for frame synchronization in each frame and four
bits are used for multiframe synchronization in frames 1 and 10. Determine
the signaling rate and the size of the signaling repertoire in this system if every
multiframe is to carry atleast one signal for each voice channel. [8+8]

circuit.
