Hydroponics
Hydroponics is derived from the Latin (hydro = water; ponos = work) is a method of
farming without the use of soil media, but by using a solution of mineral nutrient or other
substance containing nutrients such as coconut fiber, mineral fiber, sand, crushed stone brick,
wood dust, and others as a substitute for soil media. Hydroponic farming can be done at home
as a hobby or to be commercialized. Some of the advantages of farming with hydroponics
system include: Environmentally friendly because it does not use pesticides or insecticides
that can damage the soil. Plants do not damage the soil because it does not use soil media and
also do not need a large place. Plant roots can check periodically to ensure its growth. More
efficient use of water for watering is not necessary every day. The results can be eaten whole
plant including the roots for free from dirt and pests. More efficient because it does not need
to splash the water every day, does not require a lot of land, crops media can be made in
increments. Faster plant growth and crop quality can be maintained. No problem pests and
plant diseases caused by bacteria, fungus and nematod worms there is lots of land. Can be
planted at any time because there is no session.
Some Plants Frequently Planted By Hydroponics is:
1. Horticultural crops: cabbage, kale, strawberries, and others.
2. Vegetables: lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, peppers, celery, garlic, onion, leek, lettuce,
and eggplant.

3. Fruit: melon, cucumber, watermelon, strawberries, tomatoes and peppers

4. Ornamentals: chrysanthemum, gerberra, orchids, kaladium and cactus.
How to Grow Hydroponics are the following:
A hydroponic cultivation is generally done in two ways, first by using hard media.
Media used, can be a coconut fiber, mineral fiber, sand, broken bricks, sawdust, and other
media as a substitute for soil. The second way is to use solution, without the harsh media for
the growth of roots, with just enough nutritious solution. This method can use techniques
static solution or solution flow.
Hydroponic Plant Care
Nursery
Is recommended to use hybrid seeds so that the quality of the fruit / vegetable
produced quite optimal.
Seeding
Seeding hydroponic systems can use wood or plastic tub. The tub contains a mixture
of finely sifted sand, husk fuel, compost and manure in the ratio 1: 1: 1: 1. All the ingredients
are thoroughly mixed and put in a tub with a height of about 7cm. Insert the plant seeds with
1 1.5 cm distance. Close tisue / sack / cloth that has been soaked so that conditions remain
moist. Do watering only when the growing media begin to look dry. Open the cover after the
seeds turn into sprouts. Move to a larger planting when the seedlings have grown at least 2

leaves.
Preparation Growing Media
Terms for hydroponic growing media is able to absorb and deliver water,
nonperishable, does not affect the pH, sterile, etc. Planting medium that can be used can be
peat, coconut fiber, husk fuel, rockwool (fibers rocks). Then fill polybag, plastic pots, plastic
bags, or plastic bearings with planting medium that has been prepared.
Giving fertilizers
Because of growing media in hydroponic system only serves as a handle root and
intermediate nutrient solution, to meet the needs of macro nutrients and micro need
fertilizing in the form of a solution that is poured into the planting medium fertilizer needs in
the hydroponic system equal to the needs of fertilizer at planting conventional systems.

Pros And Cons Hydroponics
Advantages of hydroponics is the plants grow faster, fertilizer use more efficient, use
water more efficiently, the necessary manpower less, working environment cleaner, nutrient
and pH more thoroughly, the problem of pests and plant diseases can be reduced.
The disadvantage is the availability and maintenance of the hydroponic rather difficult,
requiring specialized skills to weigh and mixing chemicals as well as the initial investment is
expensive.
