Dear Commissioner Proctor,


In response to your request to the Florida Department of Education, the teachers of Oak Ridge Elementary would like

to inform you of the following:


Although we appreciate your concern and effort, it would have been more appreciated and beneficial to the 0ak Ridge
community (administration, teachers, staff, parents, and studen*) f you had consulted with the Oak Ridge community
bere your request to the Florida Department of Educaton. However, we the teachers of Oak Ridge Elementary would
like to share with you how you can help our community (specifically our students) and school progress academically and
socially.

Create strategies to encourage parents to enroll pre-school children in quality Pre- K progrms.
Create opportunities for daycares to provide extended hours for the working parents. (A single parent might
be working two jobs or working hours that overlap or conflict with school hours and the child is at home

alone or with a baby sitter that cannot provide home work help)'
Create opportunities for more quality Pre-K providers.
Create programs and opportunities for families that are over the income limit and do not qualiff for
supplemental daycare or families of children that do not qualify for programs for children that are
developmentally delayed. (Some families cannot afford expensive child care and continue to pay their
regular household expenses).
Extend days and hours for the BL Perry Public Library and create opportunities for mentoring and tutoring
at the library.

Create strategies to bring library resources into the community to encourage reading.
Example l.Bring the book mobile back into the community for residents that do not have transportation or

supervision to get the public library.

Develop a plan to encourage churches and businesses to become business partners and mentors at school
and in the community,
Create strategies and opportunities to encourage and increase parent invovement'

Town Hall meeting on parent involvement, education, transportation, and other community concerns. (lnto the
community means; a church in the neighborhood, a neighborhood clubhouse, or the yard of a house or provide
transportation for residents to your designated location and allow the community members to speak).
