QUESTION 1
(P01,C01,C2,C4)
a) Define the following terms:
i)
ii)
iii)
iv)
Isochoric
Adiabatic
Control volume
Closed system
(8 marks)
Determine the yearly energy cost of lighting for 5 similar exam halls if the unit
electricity cost is RM 0.075 kWh.
ii) Discuss the effect of the lighting to the air-conditioning requirement to keep the halls
temperature at 25C.

QUESTION 2
(P02, C02, C2, C3, C3, C3)
a)
Steam in piston cylinder with a volume of 25 liters, is at a pressure of 1.4 MPa and
temperature of 350C. While the pressure is held constant, the volume is reduced and
35 kJ of heat is taken out of the cylinder.
i) Identify the new temperature of the steam in C.
(6 marks)
ii) Calculate the work involved in the described process in kJ/s.
(3 marks)
iii) The piston is now locked and further cooling is done until all the steam becomes
saturated vapor. Determine the final pressure of the steam in kPa.
(3 marks)
b) A closed cylinder is divided into two rooms by a frictionless piston held in place by a pin
as shown in Figure 1. Room A has 10L of air at 100 kPa, 30C and room B has 300 L of
saturated water vapor at 30C. The pin is pulled, releasing the piston, and both rooms
come to equilibrium at 30C and as the water is compressed it becomes two-phase.
Considering a control mass of the air and water, determine the work done by the system
and the heat transfer to the cylinder.

QUESTION 4
(P02, C03,C4,C5)
a) Funasonic Bhd is conducting a test on a newly designed air conditioner before it goes
into the market. During the test, the air-conditioning unit is set to cool a room at TL. The
maximum power input of the unit is 1.2 kW. At the same time, the room is gaining
energy (in kW) as Q = 0.6(TH -TL).
cycle of the unit (COPAC) is given as COPAC =0.6COPCamot, and TL= 20C determine
the maximum outside temperature, TH (in C) for which the air conditioner will provide
sufficient cooling.
(10 marks)
b) Identify whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. Justify your answer.
i)
Lowering the condenser pressure of an ideal Rankine cycle with fixed turbine
inlet conditions will not affect the amount of heat supplied to the cycle. (Use Ts diagram to support your answer)
ii)
The overall thermal efficiency of an ideal Rankine cycle will be increased if the
steam is superheated to a higher temperature. (Use T-s diagram to support
your answer)
iii)
In a simple ideal Rankine cyle with fixed turbine conditions and constant
power output, the mass flow rate of cooling water can be reduced by
increasing the steam generator pressure.

QUESTION 5
(P02, C03, C3,C4)
A Rankine cycle with a maximum temperature of 600C uses an 84% efficient turbine. The
turbine is operating between 4 MPa and 10 kPa. If the steam is reheated at 400 kPa to
400C and the steam mass flux is 10 kg/s:
a)
b)
c)
Calculate the mass flow rate of cooling water if it increases to 10C as it pass through
the condenser. (Take the specific heat of cooling water as 4.18 kJ/kg-K).
