1. Pre-requisites

Existing 3D CAD knowledge is beneficial

2. PRIMARY COURSE TOPICS

• Evaluate and identify both good and bad qualities of measurement
data.
• Segment measurement data into functional "networks" (features).
• Clean or smooth the features as needed.
• Use the "networks" to define accurate and/or smooth NURBS curves.
• Analyze the curves to verify qualities such as accuracy or
smoothness create NURBS surfaces using measurement data,
curves, and/or existing surfaces information.

IMAGEWARE Training Curriculum

• Align separate measurement data sets to create complete

measurement models.
• Align measurement models to CAD models for comparisons.
• Modify models to achieve optimal qualities.
• Verify a model's integrity at every stage of the Imageware modeling
process to ensure accuracy.

• Basic Procedures
• Creating a Surface from a Cloud
• Extracting Smooth Edges
• Offsetting Polygon Models
• Filleting Between a Surface and Curve
• Creating a Multi-Surface Model
• Reverse Engineering an Automotive Bracket
• Reverse Engineering an Exterior Surface
• Using Iterative Alignment

3. What is reverse engineering?

Conversion of a physical part to 3D cad model.

If we don’t have drawing /design and we want to copy the design from
existed part then we have to go for reverse engineering .where we are
going to scan the part under laser scanner or white line scanner or co-
ordinate measuring machine the output is a point cloud data (that is
scan), which could be opened in image ware as STL binary file. Then the
point cloud is processed to create 3d cad model.

As we opened the point cloud data in image ware, we have to study the
scan data by taking cross sections at different places of the scan.
Determine whether the part is symmetrical or not.

Symmetrical part

Symmetrical part for example seat, bumpers, helmet etc where we need
to do only half and then mirror it to another side with respect to mirror
plane.

IMAGEWARE Training Curriculum

Mirror plane It is the plane with respect to which we are reflecting one half
to get full 3d part.

4. Why reverse engineering?

• To improve existed design.

• To add new features/to alter styling on existed model.

• To meet global quality requirements.

• To generate drawings.

• To develop free form surface models and to create aesthetically

good models.

• To compare physical part with cad model.

5. Methodology reverse engineering a part

• Scan the part using white line scanner or laser scanner etc

• Output is the point cloud data

• Align the data to mould axis

• Analyses the part to be designed for centre symmetry

• Takeout portion of scan depending upon the feature for generating

surface.

IMAGEWARE Training Curriculum

• Repeat the procedure for all region of scan

• Construct sharp intersecting model

• Fillet generate

6. The high quality process

The high quality process with Imageware can be summarized as follows:

• Analyze and understand point data.

• Create a series of cross sections to define the surface.

• Create the major surfaces.

• Diagnose these surfaces for quality and styling intent.

• Edit surfaces as required, continually checking quality and styling

intent.

• Create transition surfaces.

• Edit transition surfaces with required quality and continuity.

• Create any required trims.

• Make final edits to meet requirements.

• Transfer model to other platforms for downstream processing.

7. Imageware Project Planning for Surfacing

A project should have the set of goals and requirements. If you plan properly,
you will save time and meet the desired output.

• Determine job requirements

• Evaluate your data

• Define your project goals
