O.

At midnight hour, in mirkest glen,

I'd rove, and ne'er be eerie, O,
If thro' that glen I gaed to thee,
My ain kind Dearie O;

The hunter lo'es the morning sun;

To rouse the mountain deer, my jo;
At noon the fisher seeks a glen,
A-down the burn to steer, my jo;

Altho' the night were ne'er sae wild,

And i were ne'er sae weary O,
I'll meet thee on the lea rig,
My ain kind Dearie O.

Gie me the hour o' gloamin' grey,

It makes my heart sae cheery O,
To meet thee on the lea rig,
My ain kind Dearie O.

Notes:

A lea rig is a ridge in a field left unplowed between two plowed ridges bearing grain
The A and B parts can repeat as shown for instrumental playing only; when the song is sung, do not repeat either part.

D.S.

The similarity to the Old-Timey varsovienne, "Put Your Little Foot," is no accident; both are descendents of an Austrian or French tune ca. 1865.
In the reign of Maximillian, Spanish and Austrian missionaries brought European music teachers and instruments to Mexico, gave them to indians,
and taught them to play. The musichas evolved independently since then in several regions of Mexico, including the Rio Grande River valley in
what is now New Mexico.
