2.0 INTENT

These design calculations cover the design of the supporting

steelwork of Main Steam Safety Valve Operating Platform at 51.97m & 53.47m
LVL (TOS), Main Steam Hydro Valve Operating Platform at 52.3m LVL (TOS).
Loads are applied with reference to design documents mentioned in this
document. The structural configurations used were originally from layout
department are made to suit the requirements of project specifications/ client
requirements of EDP Brazil. Analysis/design is performed by using STAAD Pro
software.

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

The design of columns, Beams, vertical bracings and plan bracings

are covered by this calculation. These calculations are to be read with drawings
listed in Annexure 1
For strength and stability requirements the structure is checked against code,
AISC-LRFD and design indent.
For deflection requirements the following criterias are adopted
Unfactored imposed loading alone is taken.
The vertical deflection of the structural members has been limited to the
following values
(Reference 2 design Intent for boiler supporting steel structures)
(a) Main Beams and Floor Main Beams for Variable loads 1/200 x Span.
(b) Beams for Platform for Variable Load 1/200 x Span
The Horizontal Displacement due to the wind loading is limited to Height/500
(Reference Design Intent)

The STAAD Pro finite element program version v8i is used for the analysis and
design.
5.0 MATERIAL

1. The Material rolled, welded I sections and attachments are to be used

structural steel design grade Q345B.
2. Channel and angle sections are to design grade Q235B.

6.0 GEOMETRY

The original references for geometry the model is taken from layout
department are made to suit the requirements of project.
7.0 LOADINGS
Seismic Load

Seismic loads have been ignored for the design of Valve operating platform.
Wind Load

Wind loads have been ignored for the design of Valve operating platform.
Self Weight Load

The self weight load case for all members is automatically generated by STAADPRO.
Gallery dead Load

The valve operating platforms were taken from the below mentioned G.A
drawings issued by layout from the 3-D Model.

i.

GA of galleries plan view section NN (+48470,+51810,+52000lvls)

ii. Main Steam Power Operated SV LHS

iii. Hot Reheat Hydrolock Valve Platform B
The galleries and platforms are metallic comprising open grid flooring (21.9
kg/m2). The load 0.22 kN/m2 for the grating is applied by equally distributing the
load across the width of platform as U.D.L on the load bearing beams.
An U.D.L of 0.147 kN/m for handrail and toe-guard is applied on the perimeter
beams.
Gallery Imposed Load

The extent of platform is taken from the below mentioned gallery G.A drawings
issued by layout from the 3-D Model.

i. GA of galleries plan view section NN (+48470,+51810,+52000lvls)

06361/X250/AD/22360/X./0028

ii. Main Steam Power Operated SV LHS

iii. Hot Reheat Hydrolock Valve Platform B
A live load of 5 kN/m2 unfactored loads is applied by equally distributing the load
across the width of platforms and applied as U.D.L on the load bearing beams.
8.0 LOAD COMBINATIONS

Load combinations for strength checks are based on the factors in

ASCE 07-05 as mentioned in design intent (Reference-2)
9.0 CODE STRENGTH AND DEFLECTION CHECK

Strength and Deflection for all the members was checked against the
codes and Maximum allowable deflection (as per design intent reference 2) by
STAAD.
For STAAD input, strength check and deflection refer the following mentioned
document
i. Main Steam Safety Valve Operating Platform(LHS).std
ii. Main Steam Hydro Valve Operating Platform.std
From the design strength check and deflection check outputs (refer to document
mentioned above), the basic design drawings are generated and released for
connection design and detailing (see Annexure 1 list of drawings).
