More About Nursing Homes…

By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab
Center, 770-834-8243, MMurphy@GramercyHealth.com
Okay, if you have been reading my series of articles in this mag-
azine, you now know how to pay for nursing home care, what
questions to ask when signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan
and pretty much what reasons there are for admission to a nursing
home. This month, I am going to talk about what to look for when
choosing a nursing home.
First, determine the primary need for the placement. Are you
looking for rehab services? Does your family member need skilled
nursing service, such as a feeding tube, wound care or injections?
Does your family member suffer from dementia and need special
services because of that diagnosis? Answering these questions will
determine what is important to look for in choosing a facility
Second, determine the most convenient location for your fam-
ily member. Should they be closer to your work or to your home?
Which family member or friends are most likely to visit more often?
Is there an elderly spouse to consider? Is there traffic to consider
that will make your commute to and from more difficult?
Third, will your doctor recommend a facility, or do you know
anyone who has had any experience with a nursing home? Opin-

ions are helpful, as long as you keep in mind that, very often, state
of mind determines whether an experience is positive or negative.
Pine Knoll Nursing and Rehab is located just minutes from For most people, admitting someone to the nursing home is very

Photographer Candy O’Hern Childrey calls Coral Gables, Florida
home these days, but spent much of her youth in Carrollton,
graduating from Carrollton High School and spending lots of
time with her grandparents Dr. Will and Howard Thomasson. Her
photography tries to capture a moment in time for all to see and
experience. Birds are such beautiful, graceful creatures, and most
of us never have spent time observing their behavior and habits.
Childrey’s growth as a photographer has been nurtured through
contacts made in artistic and photographic organizations. She has
been very fortunate to have formed a friendship with one of the best
emerging nature photographers in South Florida. He has taken her
under his wing and shown her the tricks of nature photography,
and specifically photographing birds in flight. He has also provided
advice on PSA (Photographic Society of America) expectations.
Childrey is involved in several camera clubs and is the past vice
president of the Coral Springs Art Guild and is the present vice
president of the Coral Springs Camera Club. She has received over
30 regional awards for her photographs and has exhibited all over
the southeast. In 2008, Childrey was listed in the Who’s Who in
Photography by The Photographic Society of America.

RDCONTRACTORS.COM know several people who live
in average-size spaces and
have two or even three bee
hives. They enjoy honey, wax
candle making, body-product
crafting, teaching their children the wonders of bees, while pollinat-
ing local fruit trees, vegetable patches, and other important fauna.
This idea, and the fact that my vegetable garden suffered from lack
of pollination last year, lured me to start a few colonies in my yard.
We have the hives ready, have taken a class from the Atlanta Bee
Keepers Society and are anxiously awaiting our first bee colony.
Why are bees important? It has often been said that bees are
responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. Most
crops grown for their fruits (including vegetables such as squash,
cucumber, tomato and eggplant), nuts, seeds, fiber (such as cot-
ton), and hay (alfalfa grown to feed livestock), require pollination
by insects. Pollinating insects also play a critical role in maintain-
ing natural plant communities and ensuring production of seeds in
most flowering plants. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the
male parts of a flower to the female parts of a flower of the same
species, which results in fertilization of plant ovaries and the pro-
duction of seeds. The main insect pollinators, by far, are bees, and
while European honey bees are the best known and widely man-
aged pollinators, there are also hundreds of other species of bees,
mostly solitary ground nesting species, that contribute some level of
pollination services to crops and are very important in natural plant
communities. Why are bees good pollinators? Bees make excellent
pollinators because most of their life is spent collecting pollen, a
source of protein that they feed to their developing offspring. When
a bee lands on a flower, the hairs all over the bees’ body attract
pollen grains through electrostatic forces. Stiff hairs on their legs
enable them to groom the pollen into specialized brushes or pockets
on their legs or body, and then carry it back to their nest. Individual
bees tend to focus on one kind of flower at a time, which means it is
more likely that pollen from one flower will be transferred to another
flower of the same species by a particular bee. Many plants require
this kind of pollen distribution, known as cross-pollination, in order
to produce viable seeds. The business of collecting pollen requires a
lot of energy, and so many flowers attract and also reward bees with
nectar, a mixture of water and sugars produced by plants.
Maintaining good cultural practices whether keeping bees or at-
tracting native bees to your garden is important. Minimal use of
pesticides, providing water, and planting a variety of flowers will en-
sure your garden is bee ready.

Thoughts
from the
Mayor
Submitted by Mayor J Collins
You may have heard talk about
it or even driven downtown and no-
ticed construction at the corner of
Temple and North Carroll Streets.
The stir is the new addition to Villa
Rica’s historic district – a 700 ca-
pacity “green space” amphitheater
where as many as 13 concerts and
annual events will be held from the Grand Opening on May
8 to the lighting of the Christmas tree in December. Conve-
niently located, this grassy, three-terraced amphitheater, with
buildings designed to look like a train depot, will include a
state-of-the-art stage, concession building/ticket booth and
public restrooms.
With the help of the city’s Historic Preservation Commit-
tee, City Council and countless others, the city was issued
$400,000 in SPLOST funds provided by the Carroll County
Board of Commissioners for green space at the former loca-
tion of the Coca Cola Bottling Company and later Golden City
Hosiery Mill. As this exciting project progresses toward com-
pletion, you may further beautify the amphitheater grounds
with a personalized plaque (in honor or memory of a loved
one) that will mark individual trees.
This venue will have an immediate and positive impact
on Villa Rica’s economic development. Benefits for the com-
munity include increased tax revenue and more business for
merchants, restaurants and hotels. The new amphitheater
will make our city more of a destination. As people drive by,
I hope that they will stop to see this new venue or come for
a concert. It will bring people to the old downtown, and it’s
good for business. These concerts and annual events will en-
hance tourism, quality of life, community pride, invite com-
munity involvement and build a sense of belonging.
Our city has plenty of parks and sports fields and also has
a vision to have a community gathering place that reaches an
expanded demographic group. Amphitheaters help people
connect with one another and are just fun ... a good way
for cities to provide affordable entertainment that caters to a
large audience.
While future concerts will require tickets, enjoy three “free”
summer concerts sponsored by the Downtown Development
Authority, FUNcert Friday, a Golden City Cruise Car Club Sock
Hop and Beach Blanket Theater – movies in the park.
I invite you to enjoy leisure time at this beautiful park
throughout the week with your family and friends.
