SHMEL
INFANTRY WEAPONS
ROCKET LAUNCHERS
RPO-Z (incendiary) warhead, used to set landscape, buildings, and oil depots on fire;
RPO-D (smoke) warhead, used to set up
smoke screens, blinding weapon system
crews, as well as to create unbearable conditions inside various covers.
The Shmel flamethrower boasts high combat capabilities and reliability, and is easy to
handle.
General description
The disposable launcher (which is also
sealed container for storing and transporting
the warhead) houses a capsule-warhead and
a gunpowder booster. The launcher is made
of glass-reinforced plastic. It mounts firing
mechanism with safety catch and mechanical
sight, consisting of a fore sight and an
adjustable folding dioptre backsight. The
flamethrower can be fitted with an optical
sight as well. A portable set of Shmel includes
two loaded launchers, connected so as to
make a 24-kg pack to be carried on the back.
When launched, the capsule-warhead flies
along a ballistic trajectory. The warhead is finstabilised. The unique design of the warhead
ensures minimum variation of muzzle velocities and high accuracy. Hit probability against
an IFV at 400 m is 0.8. Lethality of the thermobaric warhead is similar to that of a
122mm HE-fragmentation round. The
flamethrower is shoulder-fired. It can also be
fired from a room (over 60 cu. m in volume),
and with obstacles behind it.
The RPO-A, RPO-Z and RPO-D-equipped
flamethrowers are in service with the Russian
Armed Forces.
Mission
The Shmel disposable flamethrower is
employed to increase combat capabilities of
the ground forces. It is designed to attack personnel and weapon systems in various covers,
as well as to destroy fortifications, automobiles
and lightly armoured vehicles, and set fire and
generate smoke screens.
Features
Shmel is most effective in terrains, where
artillery or armoured vehicles are restricted, i.e.
in mountains, built-up areas, forests, on the
plain when roads are impassable, or when
enemy aviation and artillery enjoy obvious
superiority, and also in ranger (guerrilla) operations.
The flamethrower can be fitted with three
types of warheads:
RPO-A (thermobaric) warhead, used to
attack protected weapon systems in built-up
areas, fields, mountains, as well as to destroy

The AP-T STING projectile consists of Tungsten Penetrator, integrated into lightweight body. On
impact the penetrator starts to progressively break-in through the armor, forming a bundle of highspeed fragments. The higher energy of the fragments ensures more damage and higher kill probability
behind the armor.
The ammunition is safe in transport, storage and handling and ensures the reliable performance of the
gun systems. The automatic guns 2A42, 2A72 and modifications are mounted on the following
carriers:
- Infantry Fighting Vehicles BMP-2, BMP-3, BMD-2, BMD-3, BTR-80A, BTR-100 and
modifications
- Reconnaissance Vehicle RIS

The round with 81 mm mortar bomb fitted with thermo baric warhead for L16A1, US M1 and
M8-111 mortars is intended for defeating the enemy manpower in the open, in urban built-up
areas, in fortifications, bad country and vehicles. It causes heavy damage and impossibility to
deliver combat thus minimizing civilian casualties. At burst, the mortar bomb creates a peak
of overpressure of 50 kPa in a radius of minimum 5 m from the hit point in an open ground or
a closed room with a volume of 60 m3.
The blast wave is propagated copying the surface contour. In the burst zone, oxygen "ignites"
and the temperature goes up beyond the limit of 800C.

FUZE
The mortar bomb is fitted with the OFZ-2M Point Detonating Fuze.
The 120 mm mortar round with thermo baric warhead for US M120 mortar is intended for
defeating the enemy manpower in open and urban built-up areas, in fortification and bad
country, bunkers and vehicles. The round can be fired from all 120 mm mortars
At burst the round deflagrates, rather than exploding. By the explosion the munitions sprays
its gel out in the form of a fine mist, and ignites it. The resulting expanding fireball uses up all
the available oxygen. The burning assumes all the oxygen hasn't already been sucked out of
one's lungs. The detonation creates over-pressure, the blast wave is propagated copying the
surface contour eliminating protection like walls and armored vests.

The non-contact fuse system NV-PTM-RC Is a remote controlled fuse designed to operate
with anti-tank mines TM-62M and TM-62P3. The system consists of one control unit NVPTM-RC/T and five fuses NV-PTM-RC/F. The fuses can be activated or neutralized singly or
In groups by the control unit.
The fuse Is a state-of-art high-tech detonator incorporating the latest achievements of the
technologies. It Is provided with a coded VHF remote control system enabling to switch the
fuse on/off from a distance up to 3 km. The fuse can also be switched on manually or
automatically In case of machine mine laying. The control system of the mine Is activated by
mechanic and electronic timers after a certain time delay, which allows a safe withdrawal
after laying the mine in operation state.
The electronic circuit controls different types of sensors (some chosen as options) and ensures
that the charge will detonate only In case of a tank passing over. Other vehicles, as well as
nearby passing tanks, can not detonate it.
On activation the fuse, the HEAT charge penetrates through the vehicle's bottom and
simultaneously detonates the main charge of the mine.
If not activated during the entire pre-set armed state time, the control system initiates the
firing circuit for self-destruction or neutralization of the fuse in accordance with the relevant
preliminary field-programmable mode. This command can be performed by the remote
control at any moment during the armed state time. The neutralized state of the fuse Is clearly
visualized.
