MUMBAI: GATEWAY OF INDIA
Attraction type: Landmark/point of interest, Maritime museum
Address: Peninsula at end of C. Shivaji Maharaj Marg Mumbai
India
The most important thing about the Gateway is not the arch at
all - it's the sea beyond it. You see, it was this deep and safe
harbour that
first
attracted the
Portguese,
who called it
"Bom Bahia"
- Good Bay (that's where the city's name comes from).
The Portuguese later gave away the island to the English
as part of the dowry of the Portuguese princess Catharine
Braganza. And the English East India Company
developed Bombay into a major shipping and trading harbour.
Also is here the famous TAJ Hotel

CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI TERMINUS
Attraction type: Architectural building
Address: Mumbai India
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus
Station, in Mumbai, is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival
architecture in India, blended with themes deriving from Indian traditional
architecture. The building, designed by the British architect F. W.
Stevens, became the symbol of Bombay as the ‘Gothic City’ and the
major international mercantile port of India. The terminal was built over 10
years, starting in 1878, according to a High Victorian Gothic design
based on late medieval Italian models. Its remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches and
eccentric ground plan are close to traditional Indian palace architecture. It is an outstanding example of the meeting of two
cultures, as British architects worked with Indian craftsmen to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms
thus forging a new style unique to Bombay. (© UNESCO World Heritage Centre)

demanding the expulsion of John Child, who had provoked the Siddi. The Siddi's investiture caused many to leave the fort and
the surrounding settlements. However, the work on the fort continued until 1716. The fort had three gates, called the Apollo
Gate, Church Gate and Bazaar Gate. The castle was surrounded by residences, shops and places of worship. A moat was
also built in 1743. An esplanade, level open space along the western fringe of the fort, was maintained for defensive reasons, to
provide a clear line of fire. The fort itself was demolished by Sir Bartle Frere, Governor of Bombay in the 1860s, as serving no
purpose. The ramparts were removed, the moat filled in, and the area was significantly re-structured. The business district's first
