Earth Day Open House

On Thursday, April 21, The Whole School welcomes

interested parents and their children to our Earth Day
Celebrations happening from 2 to 5 pm at the school,
5614 Highway 6, Winlaw.
Join us to learn more about the school, sustainability,
food systems and growing plants through interactive
activities for children. This is a wonderful opportunity
for parents to talk to our principal, Anniah Lang and
teachers, Eli Geddis and Roxanne Mackay, about our program and see if our school would be a good fit for their
family, says Tara Harvey, school board member.
This year, the students are exploring how the permaculture garden will help them reach their healthy living goals.
Last year, with the Columbia Basin Trusts generous support, The Whole School fenced the garden; this year the
students will learn the principles of permaculture design.
They will use compost generated
in the past few years through the
bokashi composting system to start
edible plants and herbs.
The Whole School program
emphasizes connection to the natural world through our Outdoor
Leadership Program and now our
Permaculture Gardening Program.
Earth Day is an important celebration for the students and the focus
this year will be on food systems
and designing the garden, explains
Roxanne.
It is our hope that the garden will
become a key piece of what makes
our school unique a platform for
learning and community engagement, explains Jose Corrigan,
school coordinator.

Students will be key participants in garden design,

building and upkeep. The garden will provide a healthy,
outdoor space for curricular learning about growing food,
nutrition, food preparation through the hot lunch program and food preservation. The Whole School students
plan to work alongside community members, food bank
clients, staff and parent volunteers to grow healthy food
and offer an education space about permaculture by leading tours and workshops for community members and
other schools.
The school strives to create a nurturing and safe environment and has chosen to block all WiFi and cordless
phone signals at the school. The Whole School is now
accepting applications for kindergarten and elementary
level students.
For more information, contact the school at wholeschool@gmail.com or call 250-226-7737.

3rd Annual Spring Farm Fair

Our 3rd Annual Spring Farm Fair will be held on May

14 from 11 am until 5 pm, at the Pass Creek Regional
Exhibition Grounds in Robson.
The Spring Farm Fair is associated with the Annual Pass
Creek Fall Fair which informs and educates the public
regarding the importance of the agricultural industry and
the positive impact to the economy of British Columbia.
This event brings ranchers, farmers, local business, local
food producers and vendors, who raise all different types
of livestock, fruit trees, nurseries, poultry, grape vines,
nuts, herbs, bees etc, together.
We invite farming related businesses to attend and support farmers by offering information on merchandise and
how it could impact their farm, improve their operation
and financial bottom line. We invite the public to attend
and give the option of purchasing items from farmers
direct and/or the ability to purchase locally in the future!
Educating the public to purchase food and farm items
would create a huge financial impact to our local economy.
If each household spent just $40 a month ($10 a week) on
locally produced food, multiply that by 12 months that
equals $480/per year. If you multiply $480 by the number of households in the West Kootenay (approximately
80,000), that would equal $38,400,000 back into the local
economy, yearly! This would greatly support local farmers
thus making them a viable industry in our area.
People are interested in where their food comes from
and they want to buy local, they dont want to buy offshore
food that they have no idea how it is grown or handled.

Board of Directors: There were fewer nominations than vacant positions on the board, so those nominated will become directors by acclamation. Therefore there wont be an all-candidates forum.
The composition of the board remains unchanged: Jeff Mattes, Steve
Fawcett, and Ross Lake begin new two-year terms. Glen Settle, Stan
Baker, and Sean Brenton have a year remaining in their terms. Chris
Webster and Rick Hewat have ongoing appointments by the RDCK and

Focus On Water, Drought

And Climate

The West Kootenay region experienced record-breaking

high temperatures in spring and summer 2015. By early
July, wildfires burned at Nelsons doorstep and the city
was on Stage 4 water restrictions for two months. Outside
Nelson, rural residents, dependent on surface water, continued to see lower water levels in the streams they rely on
for drinking water. Some residents were completely without water at times during the summer.
If there had been a significant wildfire closer to the
city, we dont even know if the city wouldve had the water
resources to fight it and keep the taps running, said Valerie Warmington, City of Nelson councilor.

Thats why a group of citizens have organized the first

Water, Drought and Climate Change Forum in Nelson, on
Saturday, April 23 at the Prestige Lakeside Resort. Register now at www.hotandbotheredinthekoots.org
Anyone who drinks water, wants to know more about
climate change, what we can expect here in the Kootenays
and wants to be part of creating local solutions to these
emerging issues, should join us on at the free forum,
says Jan Inglis, a member of the Forums planning committee. We want a way to share information about our
common concern about the future of water in the region,
says Ramona Faust, Regional District of Central Kootenay Rural Area E director. This forum is a place where
people can learn more about the projected local impacts
of climate change and what it may mean for the water we
rely on.
If you are talking about water and climate, youre talking about droughts and wildfire too, because they are all
connected. Thats why the free forum dubbed Hot and
Bothered in the Kootenays includes presentations, panel
discussions and mini workshops on water conservation
and fire preparedness.
Everyone is invited to the free forums daylong discussion, including presentations on climate change, local

Burning Period Approved

By Fire Chief

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services chief Len MacCharles

is encouraging residents to reduce the amount of deadfall, woody debris and long grasses around their homes to
minimize the fire risk posed by these ground fuels.
The best way for residents to rid their properties of these
fuels is to take them to the Grohman Narrows Transfer Station. Charges are $5 per load for loads up to 2.5 cubic metres
and $50 for large loads and $25 per tonne, if chipped.
The chief has approved a burn period subject to weather
and local fire conditions, until Sunday, April 17. Do note:
burning of woody debris requires a permit and is subject
to Bylaw No. 3268. https://nelson.civicweb.net/filepro/

Jasper is a very lovely cat who has quickly become a staff favourite
at the Nelson Branch BCSPCA. He is shy at first but warms right up
as soon as you touch him. He is great with children and doesnt
seem to mind the other cats he shares a communal room with.
Although in his previous home he was an outdoor cat, we think
Jasper would love to have the comforts of a warm window
perch in his new home. For more information on Jasper, please
contact the BC SPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178 or visit

The Spirit In The Landscape At

Convergence Weekend In Silverton

Registration is now open for the 3rd Convergence Writers Weekend in Silverton, May 13 - 14. Featured will be
best-selling environmental memoirist and fiction writer
Sharon Butala and nonfiction author and native land
claims expert J. Edward Chamberlin.
The event, at Silverton Memorial Hall, will feature talks
and writers workshops conducted by the two featured
authors, plus a panel discussion. Cost for the weekend
is $35. More information is available at www.heartsrest.
com/convergence/convergence-writers-retreat, to register
email: convergence@heartsrest.com
The theme of this years weekend, The Spirit in the Landscape, looks at the deep connection with nature that many
Kootenay residents report experiencing. Butala, from
Calgary, is best known for her memoir The Perfection of
the Morning about her time on a ranch in southern Saskatchewan. Her most recent novel is Wild Rose (2015).
Chamberlin, from Halfmoon Bay, has been on faculty at
the University of Toronto since 1970. His books include If
This Is Your Land, Where Are Your Stories?: Finding Common Ground (2003), which explores how stories and songs
locate people in a landscape and A Covenant in Wonder
with the World: The Power of Stories and Songs (2012).
Butala and Chamberlin will speak Friday night, May 13,
followed by a Q & A. Their talk is open to the public for a
$5 admission, as well as to conference registrants. On Saturday, May 14, Butala will conduct a three hour writers
workshop in the morning and Chamberlin will conduct
a similar workshop in the afternoon. A Saturday evening
panel discussion will feature the two guest authors plus
New Denverites, Therese DesCamp, a United Church
Minister and co-founder of the Hearts Rest Retreat Centre
and the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society and Sean Arthur
Joyce, a journalist, poet and social historian, whose most
recent books include Laying the Childrens Ghosts to Rest:
Canadas Home Children in the West (2014).
Previous Convergence Writers Weekends were held in
New Denver in 2012 and 2013.

Not Your Average Makeup Routine

The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture and Rossland Youth Action Network are presenting a two day
workshop on Special Effects Makeup, April 16 and 17,
from 1 5pm. The workshop will be facilitated by Carolyn
Ferraro and will teach the skills needed to create everything from simple cuts and bruises to prosthetic appliance
application.
Ferraro is originally from Trail, she moved to Vancouver to earn a diploma in makeup design for film and TV
from Vancouver Film School. She has worked on numerous sets in Vancouver, now she is back home and is excited
to share her skills and knowledge with the youth of the
Kootenays.
The great thing about this workshop is that it will appeal
to a wide range of youth, says Tara Kowalchuk, RCAC
executive administrator. It is part of our film workshop
series, however, the skills can be used for activities that
have nothing to do with film, such as theatre, dance, or
even Halloween.
The first day of the workshop, Ferraro will teach the
basic skills, how to create fake cuts and bruises. The second day, she will build on these skills and teach the use
of prosthetic appliances. Prosthetic appliances are what
people primarily think of when they think of makeup
effects. Whether its creating a fake injury, making someone look fifty years older, burned, or like they came from
Mars, prosthetics are what are used to make these changes
in appearance.
The cost of the workshop is $30 for the two days, which
includes all the makeup and supplies needed, as well as
snacks. The workshop will take place at the YAN Space,
2076 Columbia Avenue in Rossland. Space is limited and
preregistration is required. Registration can be done at
www.u19filmfest.com
For more information, contact Tara Kowalchuk, RCAC
executive administrator, 250-921-8272 or rosslandarts@

Dance Beat Society presents the Baker Street Blues Band,
playing a mix of songs for
dancing in this great venue.
Since our New Beginnings
dance in January, the Kootenays social dance club has

Nelsons Bigby Place

Receives Donation

Nelson and District Credit Union director Michael Bancroft, presents a cheque for $493 to participants and staff
of Bigby Place (Kootenay Society for Community Living).
After winning the proceeds at a recent gathering of
Kootenay-Boundary region credit union directors and
executives, Michael felt the money would be best suited
to assist Bigby Place and their day program that supports
adults and children with life skills, community access, recreation and leisure programming, in addition to employment and volunteering opportunities in Nelson.

New Student Access Card

Benefits Area E Students

Students who live in Area E will now be eligible for a Student Access Card at the Nelson Public Library. The pilot
project supported by Area E Director Ramona Faust through
community grant funds allows students living outside of the
Nelson Librarys service area to enjoy the same barrier free
access to library materials that other students enjoy.
At a referendum on Library service that took place in
2010, the majority of Area E residents voted in favour of
subscription based library access rather than universal
access supported by taxation. This put students of Blewett
and Redfish schools, as well as students of Trafalgar and
LV Rogers schools who reside in Area E, at a disadvantage. When the topic came up as an area of concern at a
recent school principals meeting in Nelson, Chief Librarian June Stockdale decided it was time to take action.
I reached out to Area E director Ramona Faust, who
agreed that all students should have equal access to the
Library, she says. Were delighted that she saw the need
and took the initiative to fund the program.
Area E students from K 12 will be eligible for the new
five item Student Access Card. This way, Area E students
looking for school research materials, wanting to access
online resources, or just wanting to read for pleasure will
be able to check out items from the Nelson Library. The
card is not transferable to other family members. Area
E families are still free to purchase family memberships
at the regular rate, with which each family member may
borrow up to 20 items.
It is important that educators can take advantage of
what the library has to offer without leaving Area E children out says Area E Director Ramona Faust. The Student
Access Card is a one year pilot project. For more information go to www.nelsonlibrary.ca or call 250-352-6333.

Spring Farm Fair contd from pg 25

Spring Farm Fair has continued to grow in its second

year and has become an important event for farmers to
gather and source local livestock, seeds, plants and equipment for the upcoming growing season. We anticipate a
larger turn out for the 3rd Annual Spring Fair as word
of this unique event spreads. We want to encourage more
people to have backyard gardens growing their own fruit,
vegetables and herbs. And want more backyard poultry
and small livestock, where permitted, so people can have
fresh protein that is raised humanely. Farming knowledge
and being able to meet and talk in person to local farmers
and ranchers is priceless.
Spring Farm Fair will have two bunny petting zoos and
horse drawn carriage rides, which are free. There is no
gate admission and there will be a concession and ATM
on site.
We are hoping you will consider attending the Spring
Farm Fair as a vendor business rate is $50 and noncommercial is $10. For more information and for vendor registration, go to www.passcreekfair.com.

EarthMatters Polls Residents

The RDCK is currently preparing an amendment to

their Resource Recovery Plan that could include a composting facility and the EarthMatters program will be
bringing a survey of area residents regarding municipal
composting to the table.
The survey asks composting related questions such as if
organics in the garbage should be banned, if people want
to see a municipal compost pickup program and how
much they would be willing to pay for it.
We are in the early planning stages of the Resource
Recovery Plan amendment. One of the RDCK Resource
Recovery staff proposed priorities for the amendment
is organics diversion, says Nicole Ward, Environmental
Services coordinator at the RDCK. Input on this theme
and others, is required from the Resource Recovery Plan
Advisory Committee.
The Advisory Committee is made up of technical
personnel involved in the plan as well as community

members. The RDCK plans to have the amendment finalized by next February.
EarthMatters sits on the Advisory Committee and we
will be bringing the results of this survey to the RDCK at
the next meeting on May 11 says EarthMatters coordinator Bruce Edson.
From a financial perspective, a centralized composting facility could reduce tipping fees by reducing waste
volumes, but the cost of collecting, transporting and
centrally composting organics from households would
also be significant. From an environmental perspective
composting reduces methane emissions from the landfill
and produces a soil conditioner, but transportation and
processing also have impacts. The most environmentally
friendly way to compost is probably at home, but many
people are unable to do this for various reasons.
Im hoping this survey will kick-start a discussion
about municipal composting, because the planning process is happening now that will decide what policy we
are going to see in the near future from our local governments, says Edson.
The survey, open to all residents of RDCK, can be found
at www.ecosociety.ca/earthmatters, or contact Bruce
Edson at bruce713@gmail.com for more information.

Boots In The Koots

Firefighters in Robson continue to flex their fundraising muscles by filling their boots for Muscular Dystrophy
Canada. The volunteer fire department raised a whopping
$6517 for the organization on Saturday, March 19.
Im so proud of our amazing group, said Jeff Grant, Chief
of the Robson Volunteer Fire Department. For a community of our size to create results like we did is nothing short
of incredible. Not only did it feel good doing it, but we continued to build on what are truly outstanding benchmarks.
In 2014, the department raised $6200, a feat which
garnered the team the Up and Coming Fire Hall of the
Year Award at Muscular Dystrophy Canadas annual
conference.

The following year the team surpassed that amount by

raising $6400. From executing calls like the professionals
we are, to taking training deadly serious, to recognizing
our little community of Robson, we can make a big difference if we just decide to do it, said Grant.
The Robson firefighters ongoing commitment to protecting their community and raising funds for a cause they
are passionate about is truly outstanding, said Andrew
Bellerby, the RDCKs Regional Fire Chief.

Physiotherapy in Kaslo

Kaslo & Area

HEALTH MATTERS

A physiotherapist is available through

Interior Health two days per week.
However, she has only limited service for
outpatients. Most of her time is spent
working with the residents in Residential
Care and seeing clients in their homes
under the Home and Community Care Program. She is able to see a few outpatients
after they have had orthopaedic surgery
such as knee and hip replacements.
However, this service is not available if
the person is covered by insurance such
as ICBC or WCB. For more information call
the physiotherapist at 250-353 2742.

tougher pieces such as a chuck roast and
use in roasts or stews.

Combat Rising Food Costs

Healthy Eating and Treats

It is becoming more difficult all the

time for Canadian families to put healthy
and satisfying meals on the table. Weve
experienced rising food costs over the
past year and this is forecasted to continue throughout 2016. According to the
Guelph Food Institute the highest price
increases will be fruit, vegetables and
meat. Knowing this, how do you maximize
your food dollars?
Grocery stores want shoppers to buy
products on impulse and therefore spend
more. Plan ahead by checking prices and
making a grocery list in order to avoid
spending money unnecessarily. It is also
a great idea to prepare larger meals. This
way you can buy in bulk to save money
and then freeze leftovers for lunches and
dinners.
To cut costs and boost your nutrition
intake remember to use fruits and vegetables that are in season. Try to buy in bulk
when prices are low and freeze or preserve
to have on hand year round. At certain
times of the year frozen or canned fruits
and vegetables may be cheaper than their
fresh counterparts. Freezing is an especially
good method for preserving nutritional value. Remember to choose canned products
with little or no added salt and sugar. Cook
with root vegetables such as turnips,
parsnips, potatoes and carrots by boiling,
baking or microwaving.
Using protein alternatives at least two
to three times per week is also a great
idea as meat is often the most expensive
part of a meal. Pulses are a great source of
nutrients and fibre and they provide good
quality protein to keep you full for longer.
You can either soak and cook dry beans,
which is the cheapest option, or buy

We often think of healthy eating as an

all or none situation. Many of us feel that
in order to eat healthy we have to eat a
salad every day and avoid all treats. When
we dont accomplish that, we feel guilty. I
suggest we re-think that.
I was recently at a friends home celebrating her birthday. Someone at the party
mentioned they were trying to eat healthy
but they had failed that day because of
the cake, chips and drinks. That got me
thinking. Healthy eating is much more
than eating only nutritious food. Enjoying
treats on special occasions, eating a
couple pieces of chocolate after a meal or
going out for a burger and fries once in
a while can all be part of healthy eating.
Treats are okay as long as we focus on
eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains,
dairy, plant based proteins like lentils,
seeds and nuts most of the time. Having a
good relationship with food and enjoying
all food, even those not-so-nutritious, can
set us up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
This mindset allows us to not feel guilty
when eating treats and it can keep us on
track with healthy eating!
We are bombarded by so many messages
on social media about what foods to eat
for certain health benefits. The truth is, all
food provides health benefits. The piece of
cake that I ate at the birthday celebration
was good for my sense of well-being and
social connectedness. I enjoyed eating
that small piece of cake with friends as we
talked, laughed, and enjoyed each others
company. And of course that chocolate
cheesecake tasted really good too it was
the real deal made with real cheese and
real chocolate. Many desserts and recipes
out there use alternative ingredients to

make them seem healthier, but the reality

is that date loaded, cashew cream-filled,
carob soaked cake is really not any healthier than your grandmothers recipe.
Sometimes we all need a reminder of
what healthy eating really is. Registered
Dietitians help by working with you to
determine what works best for you. And,
yes, that might include having a small
treat every day! Registered Dietitians take
a holistic approach, looking at all aspects
of your life, to help you to make healthy
lifestyle changes. To speak to a Registered
Dietitian, call HealthLinks BC at 8-1-1.
