Introduction
Online learning also offers a more affordable option for
those for whom a full-price bricks and mortar university
degree is simply unattainable.
But again, this not about replacing one model with the
other. There will always be those who will want, and
benefit from, the physical experience of attending a
3

university. Moving forward, whats important is to provide

the right, quality provision in the right way for individuals.
In an academic career stretching some 50 years, I have
worked across almost every variant of higher education
that you can imagine from traditional and new
universities to distance learning and, now, a nonexecutive role with an online learning provider. 1.
Whatever the delivery model, success relies on the same
fundamental principles of quality teaching, content and
experience .
Quality is the cornerstone for any successful higher
education provider, and the seismic impact of the tuition
fee changes has brought this absolutely to the fore.
Students are more mindful of what they are getting for
their money. Without a high quality product, with proven
results and benefits for the student, institutions will not
survive.

Can Online Courses Replace Traditional Education?

While students may give millions the opportunity to hear
lectures from some of the worlds leading academics,
what is missing is the high quality, sustained student
support that transforms this into a rounded educational
experience.

The opportunity of education online

Im not saying that excellent student support is the
preserve of bricks and mortar universities. This is by no
means the case it can also be delivered through a
structured virtual learning environment including, for
example, regular live video tutorials and direct email
access to tutors. The online academics I know tell me that
students are often more willing to engage with them
virtually, especially when they are experiencing problems.
And that brings me back to earlier point. Its all about
what suits the individual and ensuring that different
options of proven quality exist to cater for them.

Looking ahead, I dont believe we are on the cusp of an

online revolution in higher education but rather in a
process of continuing evolution. We are living in an era of
greater choice than ever before and there must be room
for online learning and traditional bricks and mortar
universities to be happy bedfellows.
The power of education online
The power of the Internet means that one person can
often reach a very large audience. When his family and
friends learned how well the tutoring was going,
university turned to YouTube and from there, and demand
for his services grew exponentially. By 2016 he had quit
his job. And today.2
Benefits Internet Education
There is so much that students can do with the Internet.
Not only can they communicate with international
students, they can gain from others' knowledge and
experiences, participate in chatrooms, share ideas and

solutions and learn about the many diverse cultures out

.there

While the Internet does a lot for students, there are also
benefits for parents and teachers. The interactive learning
that the Internet provides can help students and parents
with little or no English skills to learn English. Parents can
become more involved in their children's education by
connecting the school with homes, libraries or other
.access ports
Teachers can adjust to the different learning styles and in
the classroom. They can also set their own pace of
teaching. Individual teaching techniques can become
more available, which has been proven to be a factor in
.student achievement
Teachers have the chance to be able to teach at more
than one place simultaneously. They may be in a small
town but through the Internet, they can be linked to
students in more populated areas.

The marketplace for education online

That's not to say that traditional institutions are staying
on the sidelines. Many universities now offer a portion of
their content for free, with the understanding that getting
their good name out to the marketplace is good in terms
of attracting media attention, sponsorship or perhaps
even students who choose to eventually go to the
institution and pay for content.
By the next year, its content had grown by tenfold and
soon afterwards, it adopted a Creative Commons license
and began encouraging other institutions to work with it.
8

These days, there are more than one million people

accessing its site, which has more than 2,000 courses
available. The vast majority of the audience comes from
self-learners and students.
A number of other institutions have united under a
program called Coursera, which has courses from more
than 115 organizations and other institutions
participating. Some of the places you can take courses
from there include Stanford University, Yale University and
Princeton University. And like Khan and MIT, all of these
courses are available for free.
The problem of research
Can Online Courses Replace Traditional Education?
Yes, it could be more popular but not more efficient.
Its cheapness may be one of the reasons of its popularity
for a while until its efficiency becomes well known. Of
course, some institutions will get extra money but I do not
think their teaching quality would be extra or even
average With the developments in mobile technology on

line education is going to increase. It has many

advantages while there are also many disadvantages. We
have seen in India mobile banking has taken a large leap
and so will on-line education. It will be difficult to compare
with the face-to-face mode because a teacher is always
going to be better at helping the student than the
computer alone. But on-line education will be more
meaningful for many of the disadvantaged and nontraditional students because of its better time
management, and on a more leisurely scale for some
.people

It all depends in what concept of distance education you

are talking about. For adult learning, yes I think more and
more we will have courses relaying on online platforms to
develop their work. But for initial or elementary school
process face to face interaction is indispensable, the
human development depend in interactional process and
on mediated learning experience. In any approach that
you can think for education the interaction will be
.necessary for that specific period of life
10

But I would actually think about is not if is going to be an

more popular strategy or not, but how could we actually
promote an online education that reaches to the aims of
an educational process? And more, how can we assess
?the process

Conclusion

the Internet enables administrators and teachers to spend

less time on administration and recordkeeping. This would
.also give them more time to spend with their students

The future of education, both online and offline, will be

won by those who understand that why, how and where
people learn are not one-size-fits-all questions. Educators

are using mediums that couldnt be further apart. Yet

their work is in the same day and age, and both reach
many, many thousands of pupils. And both are growing.
student Academy didn't even exist a decade ago and is
.growing with breakneck speed
The great power of teaching online is not that it will
suddenly replace our colleges and institutions. Nothing
would be worse than suggesting that City Montessori
School is somehow to be replaced by student Academy.
These arent mutually exclusive solutions. Rather, I see
the Internet as supplementing, augmenting and
.increasing the amplitude of more traditional education
