Things I Wish I Knew Before
Coming To School
Become familiar with the faculty and staff in your department. You'll need to
work with them much more than you may think.
Check FirstClass e-mail multiple times a day.
Classes progress quickly and are cumulative, so don't fall behind.
College students have a lot of free timealthough at times it won't feel that
way.
Do not start packing up your belongings when your watch says it's time to go.
Your instructor hates when students do this, and she or he says when it's time
to go.
Even though it is supplied in residence halls, buy your own toilet paper stash.
Get involved in extracurricular activities to make connections.
If possible, bring a futon to your residence hall your first year.
Strong study skills are needed to succeed.
The first day of each class is usually syllabus day, and it's easy.
Use www.RateMyProfessors.com to choose your professors.
Your professor and teaching assistants want to help you. Go to them.
The Visitors Center, located in the Buchanan Alumni House, offers student-guided
campus tours, maps for self-guided tours, Saturday UMaine information
sessions, and interviews with faculty by appointment. Hours are MondayFriday
8 a.m.4:30 p.m. (year-round) and Saturday 10 a.m.3 p.m. (academic year
only). For more information, visit www.umaine.edu/orientation/visit.htm.
Faculty interviews are not required for admission; however, meeting with
members of faculty and admissions staff may be desired by individuals during
their campus visit. Scheduling a personal interview is easy. Call the Admissions
Office at (207) 581-1561 to schedule an interview appointment.
Campus Tours
Campus tours are available weekdays at 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:15 p.m. and
Saturdays at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Summer tours are only available on
weekdays. Tours leave from Buchanan Alumni House. To schedule a tour,
prospective students may call the Visitors Center at (207) 581-3740.

Gay Pride
The University of Maine has a significant gay community. Many members of the
gay community are active in campus organizations. There is a GLBT office in
Memorial Union, with a liaison to the dean of students. The Safe Zone Project
has been implemented at the University to provides gay, lesbian, bisexual. and
transgender persons and their heterosexual allies with a visible means of
indicating support for the GLBT community.
Political Activity
The New England states are typically known as blue states. More students lean
liberal than not. Maine favors the working families and the working poor and
typically holds an anti-war stance. There are more Democrats than Republicans
at the University, which is to be expected for a public New England university.
Economic Status
Students coming from out of state frequently come from households with higher
incomes. UMaine attendance tends to dwindle among the more economically
stressed states.
Catholic and non-denominational Christians are most common, but there are seven
religious organizations recognized on the UMaine campus. Most religious
activities occur off campus. To find out more information, students should check
out the Wilson Center and Newman Center, two churches strongly geared
toward the college student population. Both churches are located off campus
on College Avenue.

Even with a small Greek life population, the organizations still maintain a highly
visible role on campus and in campus events.
Both the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils, in addition to the University of
Maine System, have very stringent policies against hazing within any
organization. Hazing is broadly defined as the emotional, mental, or physical
degradation, discomfort, or humiliation of another individual. All new members

Guys & Girls: I'm from California, which people assume is a very
st uck up and judgment al place, but I have found t hat here is so

on int elligence when it comes t o making friends. If you aren't

have an except ional amount of friends. You'll make some but it

Social Scene
The social scene is really dependent on what students decide to make it. The social
scene also tends to have the highest visibility on Thursday nights and
weekends. The Greek system's participants have a greater social scene with
other Greeks. Those involved in academic clubs usually participate in activities
with those involved in the same or similarly oriented organizations. The
residence halls are also a great place to find friends and other people to do
things with on weekends.
Hookups or Relationships?
Dress Code
Some students dress better than others, a lot better. Occasionally, one will see
someone walking down a pathway dressed as though they strutted onto
campus sidewalks after departing from a Saks Fifth Avenue model runway.
Most commonly, men and women will be wearing jeans or khakis with a nice
top. A lot of the students will be seen wearing popular name brands such as
Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Express, and Gap. It's nearly
guaranteed that you will be annoyed at some point with another student in one
of your classes who thinks that sporting pajama pants is something new and
exciting. Dressing warm for the winter weather is a necessity, so be sure to
pack a jacket for anytime and a nice coat for special occasions and dress-up
days. Please note: If you plan to wear pajama pants, get something unique, not
teeny-bopper Aeropostale brand pajamas with monkey faces plastered all over
them, and wear sneakers, not nice shoes. Otherwise, you'll just look silly.

What's this?
UMaine offers great housing options for firstyear students and upperclassmen. The
apartment suites on campus work on a priority
basis, so it is difficult to get in your first year,
unless you have plans to live with a relative
that attends UMaine and already resides in
one. Oak Hall also provides very nice and
renovated singles for upperclassman housing.
The Graduate School is housed in Balentine,
where mostly singles are available for students
ages 21 and up.
First-year housing is mixed between all of the
dormitory-style residence halls. These rooms
consist primarily of doubles, and some singles
are available, but they must be requested far in
advance due to the limited capacity for firstyear students. The halls have all the amenities
students need, including communal kitchens in
the basement, as well as ample study lounges
and areas to socialize. The residence halls are
fairly strict about restricted items such as
candles, halogen lighting, and hot plates. They
are clean and up-to-date. The University is
very good about making the necessary
changes and renovations to housing, even
though most lack modern aesthetic design
features. However, preserving the original
appearance of the buildings, which marks the
era of UMaine history that they were
constructed in, appears important to the
University. The historic side of campus still
maintains the beautiful original architecture that
first occupied the campus.

All dorms are non-smoking. Most requirements state that there is no smoking
allowed at least 50 to 100 feet from all buildings. Each building is individually
marked for requirements.
Students can select Living-Learning Community housing throughout the
residence halls in order to be housed with other students who have similar
interests.
All residents on campus have access to all dorms until 9 p.m. when the
MaineCard will only get a resident into their own building. No commuters have
MaineCard building access at any time.
Androscoggin, Cumberland, and Gannett halls cluster around Stewart
Commons, creating a quad-like feeling.
Aroostook, Kennebec, Penobscot, and York halls are located on the south end
of campus.
Knox, Oxford, and Somerset halls are in the Hilltop area.
Hart and Hancock halls are close to the central mall.
Students in residence halls have cable television, Internet, wireless capability,
and access to UMaine's advertisement channel.

Campus Quality: Facilit ies are clean and spacious, alt hough
t hey oft en seem generic and impersonal. The modernit y of
facilit ies varies - it is quit e obvious which buildings are newly or
have been recent ly redone. The preforming art s facilit ies are
up-t o-dat e, as are t he research labs and dining areas. The
dorms, library, and classrooms are a bit dat ing. UMaine t akes

Best Ways to Get Around Town
Biking and walking are not only healthy but reasonable ways to travel around
Orono.
If you're in need to go a little faster, try a bicycle or some nice new roller blades.
(If you choose to blade or skateboard, don't get caught on the patio of
Memorial Union!)
Don't drink and ride! Operating a bicycle under the influence of alcohol may
cost you your driver's license.
Take your car or ask a friend for a lift.

Lobster rolls, a cold lobster sandwich on a hot dog or hoagie roll, are not only a
favorite Mainer's lunch, but they are available at many McDonald's restaurants
throughout the state.
Popovers, a traditional bread product with a hollow-like inside, are frequently
substituted for regular breads in some coastal restaurants.
More wild blueberries are produced in Maine than anywhere else in the world.
Try them in your muffins, pancakes, or waffles. You're sure not to be
disappointed with the freshest supply available anywhere.
Orono has a variety of restaurants to suit even the pickiest appetite. Students
will find that many restaurants and other local businesses have discounts and
participate in programs to attract student business. Many of the businesses are
owned by local residents who feel that UMaine students are the reason Orono
businesses thrive.

Organization Parties
Many organizations hold parties and dances on campus, but they are both
University-catered and difficult to misbehave at. Some organizations have
parties at Ushuaia and other local establishments, and they're usually a great
Friday or Saturday night activity. Hall Governing Boards and other
organizations will occasionally sponsor chem-free parties, which give students
the opportunity to participate in dry social events within their own residence
halls, or at Memorial Union.

Staar Club at the University Inn
Academic Suites
The Staar Club is a small place with a regular crowd. It doesn't matter how you
look when you go there. Admire the Jagermeister bottles lining the back of the
bar, or socialize with the locals. This bar is always sporting a mixed crowd.
There are some nice activities to take up time, including pool. But this bar is
small, gets crowded fast, and is a home base for overly intoxicated individuals
who need a short walk home. The staff is incredibly friendly to students
patronizing the establishment.

Awesome hand-made margaritas are their specialty. Some are made with as
many as seven different alcohols, so drink with caution. Tied with some
Mexican food or dessert, you and your friends are in for a treat.

Woodman's is one of the newer spots in town and is a great spot to hang out
with friends. There's a large beer selection.

Bear Brew Pub is a great place to meet with friends, have a few beers, and
hang out, or to dance and enjoy the music. The club and the restaurant,
especially the bar, are packed on weekends. The establishments have a great
atmosphere, good food, friendly service, and they fit within the college budget.
For a good time locally, this is the place to be. It's not only very popular among
the students, many residents frequent the establishments, and you will regularly
run into one of your professors having dinner in the pub.

The pub is built around a railroad theme. It's a good place to kick back with
some Irish beer, but it's not really party central.
