Im really hooked on the Net. I spend hours and hours at night

in front of the computer surfing the sites of my favourite football
20 teams, downloading games and talking in chat rooms. I love
computers! I believe they are essential in our lives and theyre
also user-friendly. I consider myself a computer-literate! My
mother thinks Im a bit of a nutter I rarely watch TV and only
go out with friends on Friday evenings. What my mother doesnt
25 like is that I monopolise the phone each evening and she cant make a single call. Nigel, hung
up the phone! I have to call granny!, she yells.
I like talking in chat rooms its a good way of meeting people from many different places and
developing great friendships. Im a bit shy (although my nickname is Tiger) and this is how I can
communicate freely with people from other backgrounds and cultures. Ive made many online
30friends in distant places such as New Zealand and the United States. We talk about many things
and Ive come to the conclusion that we have similar tastes and ideas and even have the same
problems at home and at school.
I know there are many funny stories about people who became close friends and ended up
dating or getting married. I have one to share with you.
35 One night as usual I went to check my e-mail and by mistake I entered a chat channel on
music. One of the persons, whose nickname was Sweetie, liked one of my favourite bands and
we started talking. She was a 23-year-old French girl. She graduated from law school and had
just moved to London to work in a lawyers office. We exchanged e-mails and for two weeks we
wrote to each other every day. We shared the same kind of musical tastes, we liked the same
40books and thought almost the same way. I was so happy that I could hardly wait for 9:30 p.m.
each evening to be connected with Sweetie, my cyberfriend.
As we were getting along very well, we decided it was time to have a face-to-face meeting on
a Saturday afternoon and we arranged to meet in Piccadilly Circus outside the tube station at 4
oclock. She told me she would be wearing a red sweatshirt and I told her Id be holding my CD
45player in my hand. I was so nervous!... To my great surprise, at 4:20 p.m. I saw Joanne, a new
girl from my Spanish course, with whom I had never talked much. She approached me, looked at
my hand and said she was Sweetie. We looked at each other and suddenly began laughing. How
could that be possible?
