News from the Board of Directors

Restless? Need fulfillment? Do you want to do something different? Do you crave excitement - that
feeling of having done a really great job? Do you have opinions about how our community is managed
and wish you could implement them? Do you embrace change when it makes an improvement? Can you
get your arms around decisions that are sometimes tough? Do you think being part of a business
management team would be fun? Don't just keep wishing...
...join the Board!
It's really easy. No primaries. No delegate count. No debates. No fundraising. No Super PACs. No CNN
or Fox interviews. Just ask Cindy or Karen for the right form and you're a candidate!
Each year we elect three Board members, one from each home type. Only one incumbent (from the
Carriage Homes) is running this year. The field is wide open!
So right now you're probably wondering, "Why would I want to do that? What could possibly motivate
me to make such a commitment?" Read the first paragraph again. If any of that describes you, Board
membership is a good solution. Yes, being a Board member does mean meetings - typically every two
weeks for a few hours each; then the open meeting monthly. Also, you would likely be a "liaison" to a
committee - that's sort of like being the Board's Ambassador to that committee - you don't do the
committee's work. Don't believe the myth that you'll get dozens of phone calls about "getting things
done." That's why we have Cindy and her management team. All in all, it's a good gig.
The best part is that you'll be responsible for the Board's primary mission - to maintain and build the
value of this beautiful community. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference. Give it some serious
thought.
In other news, we've recently concluded a ballot initiative within the community to determine approval or
disapproval of Bylaws modifications required by recent recommendations of the "Elections Task Force."
Those recommendations are that all residents can vote for all three Board candidates each year and that
term limits of six years would be implemented. Both measures passed by a majority vote of households
and the Bylaws are being adjusted accordingly.
Finally, this space is not normally used to eulogize residents who have died. After all, we each have a
personal story of value that could be told here. But sometimes a person leaves a mark on the community
so indelible that a few words are in order. Bill White was one of those people. As a Board member he was
instrumental in most of our engineering projects, including the Watts system in the Garden homes,
irrigation solutions, Transition, and many others. He provided sage advice and wisdom and often acted as
a stabilizing influence when turmoil was among us. As a resident, he showed us how the game of pool is
played by a master, yet did so with consummate humility. As a friend...well, he was kind, gentle, caring,
and giving. We will miss him but he will live on in our memories.

Our next Board meeting will be at Noon on Tuesday, April 5th.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

RSVP Policy
Most events have an RSVP date which will be set as close as possible to the
actual event date to allow the greatest degree of flexibility for participants while
simultaneously allowing well-organized event planning. To this end, checks are
not accepted by the Lifestyle Office or the event planners after the RSVP deadline.
New events will be promoted first in the monthly newsletter. Sign Up sheets for
these events will be placed in the sign up book at the beginning of the month of the
next newsletter issue.
Ex: Sign up sheets for an event first advertised in the November newsletter will be put out on
November 1.

Sign-up must be accompanied by a check for the event; only then will
you be considered enrolled. Separate checks must be given for each event; please put the event
name in the memo section of your check if you are unable to locate the RSVP form. Forms are
located in the back of the sign up book.
If you are paying for someone else please put their names in the memo section of the
check also.
There is no free admittance to any event for which there is an advertised charge
regardless of whether you eat or not. If you have special dietary considerations, such as
vegetarian or kosher, please let the event chair know about this at the time you sign up with your
check.

Refund Policy
The policy allows for refunds if the RSVP date has not passed. If the RSVP date
has passed there will be no refunds. Should there be any changes to this policy for a
particular event the changes will be noted in the event information. Should the
situation occur where you are unable to use your ticket after the RSVP date, please
call the Lifestyle Office and the activity chairperson to let them know as there may be
a wait list. Event chairs and the Lifestyle Office will try to arrange for you to sell your ticket
directly to the resident on the list.

Wait List Policy

When events are scheduled months ahead of time it is common to have many
cancellations; we often go through the Wait List in an attempt to sell these tickets.
If an event is sold out there will be a Wait List established. All purchased and unusable
tickets must be returned to the Lifestyle Office initially. The next individual(s) on the Wait List
will be contacted.
The number of tickets available for sale and the number required for someone on the
Wait List will affect which name will be the next contacted. The primary goal will be to sell the
tickets while, at the same time, adhering to the list.
If there is no Wait List for the activity the tickets may be sold by the ticket owner to
family/friends

conversation and inspirational topics. Do you often want to give your opinion when you
watch talk TV? Do you always agree, or NEVER? WE WANT YOU!
If you would like to speak individually about a subject, please call me prior to the

to hearing from our residents who are knowledgeable about any subject.
Bring a cup of coffee and we will get to know each other on a different level and provide
a setting for group dynamics. If you dont attend anything else at the Reserve, please

When is the Summer Solstice?
The solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2016, the solstice
falls on June 20th. Sunrise is 5:32 a.m. and sunset is 8:33 and dark is at 9:36.
The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the
equator. In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day and
its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer.

One of Nichols' last films, this cinematic triumph is a study of modern

relationships as we watch two couples searching for the formula for a

KNOWLEDGE. Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Natalie
Portman star in this corrosive, powerful dissection of love and sex in the 21st century.

MEDICAL ADVOCATES GROUP

Medications are critical to health but when they are no longer needed they become a serious health
risk to family members and pets. This can happen through accidental exposure or intentional misuse
of the drugs/unused supplements if they are not disposed properly. Do not flush medications down
the toilet or sink where they may endanger the ecosystem. In Upper Gwynedd the best thing to do is
take them to the Police Department where there is a specific, safe receptacle in the lobby for drug disposal. If
you cannot do this, remove the drugs from their containers, mix together with wet garbage such as cooked food
or coffee grounds. Block out any identifying information such as your name, prescription number and address on
the empty prescription containers before throwing them away to prevent identity theft.
Surprising contributors to weight gain: Nearly 70% of Americans are overweight and 38% of those are obese.
The basic equation in weight gain is taking in more calories than are burned off. But there is increasing
awareness that its not that simple. Compared to 1960, we are now more sedentary, eat up to 400 more calories
per day, eat more processed food and have diets containing 13% more sugars, especially high-fructose corn
syrup which is particularly adept at promoting fat storage. Another casualty of an unhealthy diet is our gut
microbiotathe trillions of microorganisms that reside in our intestinal tracts. Fiber-rich plants and fermented
foods nourish gut bacteria but are lacking in the average American diet. Gut bacteria not only aid digestion but
also influence appetite, fat absorption and metabolism. Antibiotics, which are over prescribed by doctors and are
inappropriately used in animals, kill off our healthy bacteria. Other drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics,
insulin, steroids, statins, beta-blockers, birth control pills, antihistamines and anticonvulsants are notorious
causes of weight gain.
Inadequate sleep is linked with weight gain. Sleep apnea is closely tied to obesity. Sleep deprivation
causes changes in hormones that affect appetite and fat storage. Environmental toxins, which are everywhere in
us and around us, may have a role in weight gain. Endocrine disruptors interfere with the signaling of hormones
and adversely affect growth, development and metabolism. Despite all these factors, diet and exercise are still
the most powerful tools for achieving and maintaining optimal weight.
Boost your hearing by changing your environment. Decrease background noise: Turn off music or the TV
when you are having a conversation. When going to a restaurant, sit with your dinner partner in front of you, the
kitchen/restaurant noise behind you. Chose a quiet restaurant or go at an off-peak time. Use assistive devices to
let you hear better: For the TV turn on the closed captioning feature. For the doorbell or smoke alarms get
devices with louder signals or flashing lights. Use the assistive listening systems available in many public places
such as a courtroom, movie theater or auditorium. Use visual cues to help you understand what someone is
saying. Talk in well-lighted areas so you can see the speakers face and expressions. Watch the speakers mouth
to help you pick up on words. Get close to the sound~~be close to the person you are speaking with. At public
events sit near the front. Try to reduce the echo of your environment such as hard floors, which make sound
bounce and hard to interpret. Ask people to speak up and slow down.
If you are going on an extended trip and ask your doctor for an antibiotics in case of illness, make sure the drugs
prescribed are not Cipro or Levaquin. These powerful drugs have dangerous adverse side effects. Ask your
doctor for safer medications or non-drug alternatives such as milk of magnesia tablets for prevention.
