Description:
AsimpleaudioamplifierbasedontheLA4440IC.Thiswilltakeyourcomputersheadphoneleveloutputandamplifyit
todriveapairofexternalspeakers.Ifyouarelisteningtomusicormoviesonlaptopsandcomputers,thisisauseful
littleprojectforyou.Laptopspeakersareneverloudenoughtogivesatisfyinglistening.Theygiveuserstheabilityto
hearsomething,butforanythinglikemusicormoviesoundtrackstheyareverypoorperformers.Theoutputfroma
laptopsbuiltinspeakersisjusttoolow,andthiscircuitaddressesthatlowpowerwithsomeadditionalamplification.
ThiscircuitusesanLA4440andsomesupportingcomponentstogiveyoumuchmorepower,whileretainingasmall
packagethatyoucanuse.TheICisadualchannelaudiopoweramplifier,withlowdistortion,andagoodfrequency
range.
Using2channels,theLA4440willoutput6wattsperchannel,thatcandrivemuchlargerspeakersthanalaptopcan
hold.Whenyousetupasmallenclosure(s),a12Vpowersupply,andanaudiojackconnectiontothelaptopyoull
haveaniceenhancementtoyourlaptopaudioenjoyment.

DearMrMarian,sorrytocommentonthiscircuitsolate.Isawthisupdatetoday.Itisaverystandardcircuit,
canbeeasilymadebyhobbyists,butIthinkthereisoneseriousissue.Itisahealthypracticetoalwaysincludean
inputcouplingcapacitorwhichwillblockanyDCvoltagefromthesignalsource.Thisisespeciallyimportantin
thecaseofthiscircuit,sinceitismeantforusingwithalaptop.Thisisjustforprecaution,andacoupleof2.2uF
capacitorswillnotcostmuch!Ihavemadehundredsoftheseamplifiers(usingLA4440withLA3161as
preamplifier),theICisverystableandeasytouse.Ihavedesignedaudiocassettedecksandcomputeramplifiers
usingthisICwhichareproducedcommercially,soifanyhelpisrequiredindesigninganycircuitwiththisIC,I
shallbegladtohelp.

AsfarasIcanrememberthespecsheets,theLA4440canprovideabout5.8Wattsofpowerperchannel
instereomode.Yourspeakersshouldberatedatleast6Weach,butifyoureallywnattogetthe

maximumoutputfromthisamp.get10Wspeakers,preferably5dualconetypes.
Onemorething,theexessivevibrationsmaybedueto50Hzhumleakagethroughtheinputcables.Use
goodqualityshieldedcablesforsignalinputconnection.
