    theyhadbeenpaintedinbyhandwithabrush.Ifthesharpenthresholdsettingismadeevenhigherthen
    theeffectstartstodiminish,tothepointwherenosharpeningisseenatall.
    Problemsinsharpeningdonotnecessarilymeantheuseoflowgradeequipment.Theimageontheright
    hadprintsharpensettingsappliedwheretherewaslittlecrispfocusdetailtostartwith.Theeffectsarean
    exaggeratedformofthesandpaperproblemmorelikeaplagueofblackspotsinstead.

    realproblemifdoneincorrectly.Astherearenohardedgesintheseareas,theresultcanbetoonly
    sharpenwhatdoesexisthere,namelyfilmgrainandscannernoise.Ratherthanseeingthecommonblack
    andwhitelines,thevisualeffectismoreakintosandpaper.
    Asshowninthetwoscansofthesameimage,above,therearewaystoavoidthissandpapereffect,but
    alltoooftenblanketsettingsareusedthatcanruinanimage.Photographersusevariousmethodstodraw
    thecentreoffocustotheimagesubjectkeepingonlythesubjectinsharpfocusforexample.Thesame
    approachcanhelpwhenapplyingsharpening,otherwiseyouruntheriskofdrawingattentionawayfrom
    theintendedsubject.
