Lists of Courses (Masters Program)

The lists of courses show the names of courses (which are the same names as shown
on the English academic transcript) and their curriculum codes. In principle, the classes
for the two-credit courses are held once a week (one period: 90 minutes) and four-credit
courses are held twice a week (two periods: 180 minutes). Please note that the codes
for each course are curriculum codes and not registration numbers required for course
registration.
Research Concept and Methodology Courses ()
The courses in the Research Concept and Methodology Courses are divided into the
Conceptual Framework group and Advanced Research Method group. Each course
offers two credits.

Project Courses () (70001)

The Project Courses are the core of research activities at the Graduate School of Media
and Governance. The curriculum of the graduate program not only follows the traditional
learning method where students listen to lectures, but is also designed to encourage
students to participate in the Project. By participating in cutting-edge Project Courses
led by faculty members, students receive training in planning, implementation and
evaluation of research. Thus, they are well trained to become excellent business
persons and researchers.
These courses systematically teach the process of problem identification, analysis, and
presenting results on frontier research topics. These courses provide students an
opportunity to work and conduct research autonomously and cooperatively through
planning, implementation, and evaluation process.
Project Activity Report (for Masters Students)
After students have completed their Project Courses, they are expected to write a
project activity report (one page report, A4-size) at the end of semester which is
viewable online. (Excluding students who have not registered Project Course and
doctoral students)
Students must register the URL of their project activity report at the following website:
http://vu5.sfc.keio.ac.jp/m-pro/ (in Japanese only)
If students fail to submit their Project Activity Report, Program Funds for the next
semester will not be provided. Please check the report submission deadline in the
Academic Calendar in the beginning of this guidebook.
In principle, each Project Course has two registration numbers. Number of credits
offered by each course is four credits (two credits for each registration number).

Courses Considered as the Same Course

Students are not able to register for the same course more than once as credits to
acquire a masters degree, except for Project Courses.
Courses with the same name are treated as the same course even if they are taught by
different instructors.
There are some courses from the previous academic year which are renamed and
revised. These courses may be considered as the same courses that are renamed or
revised. Students can check the list in the Japanese version of the Guidebook of the
Graduate School of Media and Governance in order to avoid registering for the same
course again. If students need to confirm about these courses, please consult with the
Academic Affairs Office.

Grading Criteria
Keio University adopts the grading criteria A, B, C and D. The criteria A, B or C
mean pass, and the criterion D means fail. The table below shows the way to measure
the grading criteria:
A
B
C
D

Excellent
Good
Satisfactory and pass
Fail

Other grades that will be recorded as given are grades for courses using P for pass
and F for fail; and grades earned during study abroad at universities, etc., using the
19

grading criteria A, B, C and D. If grading criteria A, B, C ,D , and F are used, a

D will be considered as a C, in principle. When grading criteria are unclear, a grade of
G will be recorded. The Independent Research () of the doctoral program
uses the criteria P or F.
Students who abandon a registered course will receive D or F for fail.
