Grade A Answer
A significant moral value in the novel The Curse by Lee Su Ann is the need to be
understanding. We see this value in the interaction between Azreen and the Old Lady.
Azreen understands the plight of the Old Lady and she finds her to be a very interesting character.
Azreen is labeled as nerdy and ganas. The Old Lady is also categorized as violent by the village folks
for killing her abusive husband.
The first time Azreen met the Old Lady, it was because of a dare from the others in school. The
villagers believed that the Old Lady had killed her husband and cooked him in a stew which she secretly
fed to all her neighbours. They also believed that she could turn anyone into a squirrel or a rat, and eat
him for dinner. The children were warned not to go into the jungle where she lived. However, Azreen did
not follow the order and as a result found the Old Lady and formed a special bond with her. After that, she
went to the Old Ladys house often.
The two of them cared for each other very much. The Old Lady was constantly concerned about
Azreens studies. She also wanted Azreen to hold her tongue

would find favour with her. Azreen, too wanted the villagers t understand the Old Lady and to realize that
all the tales that they were hearing about her were false.
The Old Lady later died in a fire, but her death taught Azreen an important lesson, and that is to
learn to forgive. Because of that, Azreen was able to forgive the villagers.
This moral value is relevant for the teenagers of today as they are often misunderstood by society
as brash and insensitive because of their need for individuality. Similarly, the teenagers of today
misunderstand their elders good intentions towards them taking these good intentions as a form of
control and restrictions. Thus, there is a need to be understand between these two generations for a better
future.
