Transmission Power Flow (2nd Gear Forward Example)

The explanation of the All Wheel Drive (AWD) manual transmission for two-wheel drive
operation is the same as the two-wheel drive manual transmission. Refer to System Operation,
"Transmission (Two-Wheel Drive)" for explanation and power flow for all speed gears.
The torque converter turbine drives input shaft assembly (1). The operator moves the direction
control lever that is mounted on the steering wheel column to the forward position. This lever
engages the forward clutch. The oil pressure is sent through input shaft assembly (1) to
pressurized forward clutch piston in clutch pack (2). Forward clutch pack (2) engages sending
power to forward input gear (3).
Forward input gear (3) transmits the power to drive gear (5), which turns countershaft (4), which
is constantly engaged with the speed range gears. The neutralizer button that is located on the shift
lever must be activated in order to neutralize the solenoid control valve of the transmission. This
engages first speed gear (7) or second speed gear (9) with output shaft (8). Activating the
neutralizer button releases a direction clutch and the button places the transmission into
NEUTRAL. The shift lever can now be moved into first gear or second gear. Shifter fork (11)
slides synchronizer collar (10) to the left so second speed gear (9) engages with output shaft (8).
If there is no torsional load or mismatch of speeds between the speed gear and the output shaft,
synchronizer assembly (10) will engage the speed gear with the output shaft. Once the shift is

complete, the neutralizer button must be released. The speed shift is completed and the direction
clutch is engaged again. Power is sent from the output shaft to the rear axle.

All Wheel Drive (AWD) Operation

The output shaft (13) for front wheel drive may be engaged at any time by activating all wheel
drive switch (16) that is located on the left side of the front dash panel. The switch may be
activated when the vehicle is stopped or while the vehicle is moving. All wheel drive attachments
include the following parts:
output shaft for front wheel drive (13)
clutch pack for front wheel drive (14)
gear for front wheel drive (15)
The output shaft (13) for front wheel drive connects the transmission with the steerable front drive
axle.
When the operator activates all wheel drive switch (16) on the front dash panel, the all wheel drive
solenoid is energized. A passage opens in order to allow oil under pressure to flow to output shaft
(13) for the front wheel drive. The oil flows through output shaft (13) for the front wheel drive in
order to engage clutch pack (14) for the front wheel drive. The input gear (12) for the front wheel
drive transmits power to gear (15) for the front wheel drive. Power from gear (15) for the front
wheel drive is then transmitted through clutch pack (16) to output shaft (13) for the front wheel
drive. The output shaft of the front wheel drive is connected to the drive shaft of the front axle.
