AfterThought Heel Socks

by Laura Linneman

Materials Needed:
Skein of fingering weight sock yarn that
has at least 380 yards (Sample shown is
Twisted Fiber Arts in Arial base) and has
a gauge of around 7 stitches to the inch.
Size DPNs (or prefered needles to knit in
the round) that are appropriate for the
yarn (I used a size 1 (2.25) with the Arial)
Tapestry Needle
1 foot of waste yarn (Fingering weight
yarn that is smooth and a contrast color)

The Cuff:
Using the long-tail cast on method (or stretchy method of your choice), cast
on 56 (64) stitches. Divide evenly among 4 needles and join in the round (Be
careful not to twist!). Work in 2x2 rib (K2, P2) for 2 inches.
The Leg:
Work in Stockinette Stitch for 4 more inches (Your whole piece should now
measure a total of 6 inches).
Heel Placement:
Knit 28 (32) stitches. Using the waste yarn, knit the remaining 28 (32)
stitches. Using the sock yarn, knit the stitches that were worked with the
waste yarn again.
The Foot:
Knit all stitches until the foot measures 4 inches from the desired length. The
toe will account for 1.5 inches and the heel 2.5 inches. If you want your heel
or toe longer or shorter than those measurements, you can adjust the foot
accordingly.

Toe:
Round One:
Needle 1 and 3: K1, SSK, K all remaining stitches.
Needle 2 and 4: Knit until 3 stitches remain, K2tog, K1.
Round two: Knit all stitches
Work these 2 rounds until 6 stitches remain on each needle-24 total stitches
(make sure you try your socks on at this point). Combine stitches on needles
1 & 2 onto a single needle. Combine stitches on needles 3 & 4 onto a single
needle.
Using a tapestry needle, Kitchener the toe, and weave in all ends. Make
another sock!
The Heels:
Using a needle, pick up the right leg of 14 (16) stitches along the bottom of
the waste yarn. Using another DPN pick up an additional 14 (16) stitches
from the bottom half of the waste yarn. Flip the sock so that the top of the
waste yarn is facing you and repeat the process again. You should now have
56 (64) stitches on your needles. Using your spare double point, remove the
waste yarn. Begin to work in the round. Knit 1 round, when you get to the
gap between the top half and bottom half, pick up 2 additional stitch on each
side. After completing the round, you should now have a total of 60 (68)
stitches. Knit 3 rounds of stockinette stitch (If you would like to add or
decrease depth to you heel, knit more/less rounds of stockinette stitch during
this section). Begin to shape the heel as follows:
Round One:
Needle 1 and 3: K1, SSK, K all
remaining stitches.
Needle 2 and 4: Knit until 3
stitches remain, K2tog, K1.
Round two: Knit all stitches
Continue to work these two rounds
until you have a total of 24
stitches. Kitchener the heel in the
same manner as the toe.
Complete another heel on the
second sock.
