Sample Preparation Outline (Persuade Sales Pitch)

Name: John Doe

Topic: Curriculum Overhaul
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my supervisor that I am the best person for the Curriculum rewrite project.
Central Idea: Given my curriculum development, project management, and leadership
experience, I am the most qualified person for the Curriculum re-write project
Organization: Monroes Motivated Sequence
INTRODUCTION
Attention: (this covers steps 1 & part of 2 of Monroes Motivated Sequence) This will be
the organizations third attempt at re-writing EPME curriculum. The last two attempts
were dismal failures. They required multiple extensions, went way over budget, and our
data analysis indicates the curriculum is still not effective in achieving the learning
outcomes.
Topic/Purpose/Preview: (this covers step 2 of Monroes Motivated Sequence) A
curriculum re-write project (topic) of this size and complication requires someone
(purpose) with proven curriculum development, project management, and leadership
experience (preview) therefore
Transition: because neither of us want to see this project fail again due to a
lack of experience (backwards look), allow me to explain why I am the most
qualified person to take on this project (this begins to touch on step 3 of Monroes
Motivated Sequence).
Note: Credibility and Goodwill begin with introduction and then are expanded/enhanced
throughout the body
BODY
MP 1: I have over 10 years of proven experience (step 3 of Monroes Motivated
Sequence)
Sub-point #1 (curriculum): For example, I was on the 2003 curriculum team
that created the Combined Operations course for the Chief of Staff of the Air

Force (CSAF). As a member of that team I created all of the lesson plans for the
guided discussions on leadership, followership, and mentorship.
Source Support: Not only was that portion of the course rated number one
by students and faculty, I received a coin and certificate of recognition for
my work during the 2004 Operational Readiness Inspection.
Sub-point #2 (curriculum/project management/leadership): Another example
is the Chief Leadership Course (CLC). I was in charge of the team that created all
of the online content, which ended up being seven modules with 32 individual
lessons. That course is consistently rated between a 4 and 5 on a scale where five
equals outstanding.
Source Support: The course, which was recognized by the president of
Air University as a first-of-its-kind and one of the best distance learning
courses in the Air Force for enlisted members The course has received
numerous academic awards for being the first facilitated distance
learning course for the enlisted force in USAF history; the first course to
use Adult Learning theory as opposed to pedagogy; the first course
designed to achieve the highest levels of learning (evaluation, analysis,
and synthesis), and the first course to use essay/critical thing assessments
Sub-point #3 (curriculum/project management/leadership): Finally, I led the
team that designed, developed, and delivered the new instructor training course.
That project required a complete overhaul of the 6-week course, which still used
lessons from the 1980s and 90s. I supervised a team of 12 curriculum writers and
oversaw all three phases of the project, which launched two months early and
came in under budget.
Source Support: That course has received outstanding feedback from
commandants who say how happy they are to finally see new instructors
who actually know how to teach EPME and from over 2000 graduate
surveys that rate the course as tough but worth every minute. The course
gained so much attention, that Air University evaluated the course and
decided to scrap their existing course in favor of our instructor course.
Transition: Given my proven experience, putting me in charge of the curriculum
rewrite project makes sense.

MP 2: Giving me the project is both beneficial and practical to all concerned (step 4 of
Monroes Motivated Sequence).
Sub-point #1: One of most significant benefits is my track record; you know the
project will succeed. Not once in all my years with this organization, has a
project failed under my leadership. I have been in charge of minor projects with
budgets of only a few thousand dollars and in charge of major projects with
budgets in the millions, and not once has a project failed under my leadership.
Sub-point #2: Another benefit, which is also very practical, is that by keeping
this in house, the organization saves the time, effort and cost of finding, hiring,
and acclimating someone new.
Transition to conclusion: Let me conclude by emphasizing
CONCLUSION (Summary) (step 5 of Monroes Motivated Sequence)
MP 1: My experience
Key Idea(s): which amount to over 10 years of proven curriculum, project
management, and leadership experience as evidenced by the courses Ive oversaw
and the numerous awards and recognition they have received.
MP 2: And by emphasizing the benefits and practically of giving me this project which
Key Idea(s): amount to being guaranteed a successful project while also
eliminating the time, effort and cost of finding someone else.
Closure: Given the size and scope of this projectyou want guaranteed results, you
want a curriculum that worksthat achieves its stated outcomesthat comes in on time
and on budgetwell such a project requires someone with proven curriculum
development, project management, and leadership experienceI believe I am that
persongive me the positonyou will not be disappointed!
