Stat670 - Introductory Statistics

Semester 2, 2015 Statistics Report

Due Friday 6th November, 5.00pm via the iLearn link only
Submit via the Statistics Report link in the ASSESSMENTS area of iLearn.
Instructions:
1. The answers to both questions must be word processed and presented in report format.
2. This assessment task should be uploaded as a Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF file (created
from a Word processed document) ONLY. Other formats, including a PDF created from an
image, will not be accepted by the system. This cover sheet must be attached to your
document.
3. Please note that iLearn is fairly reliable, but, like any website, it is occasionally unavailable
for short periods. Therefore, do not wait until the due date/time to start trying to submit
your work. If you have technical difficulties in submitting this assessment task, it is your
responsibility to ensure these difficulties are resolved by the submission deadline. (The
University has Help services to support you in the event of a problem; see
http://ilearn.mq.edu.au/login/MQ/help.htm.)
4. No submissions will be accepted by email or other means.
5. When you think you have submitted your assessment, please check to make sure: In
iLearn, click on the Statistics Report, and you should see your uploaded files.
6. This assessment task is worth 20% of your total grade for STAT670. You may discuss the
Assignment with other students if you wish, but must write up your reports on your own.
Submitting your assignment via iLearn is a declaration that the work is your own.

Information:
This assessment task is worth 20% and is marked out of 80. Penalties apply as follows:

The Energy study was conducted over a six year period to investigate factors which could be used
to predict the net hourly energy output of a power plant. The Minitab file, Energy2.mtw, which is
on iLearn consists of a randomly selected sample of 500 observations recorded during the course
of the study. Each observation consists of information recorded on the variables described below.
Some of the data from this study were used in Assignment 2. However, the sample used in this
question is not the same sample that was used in Assignment 2.
Variable

Description

ID

Observation identification number

AirTemp

Hourly average air temperature (C)

AirPressure

Hourly average air pressure (millibars)

RelHumidity

Hourly average relative humidity (%)

Energy

Net hourly electrical energy output (megawatts)

a. Use the Minitab file, Energy2.mtw, to fit a simple linear regression model for predicting
energy output from each of the three potential predictors described above (ie. three
separate models).
b. Write up a statistical report on your analyses (ie. one report that addresses all three
models). Your report should include a comparison of the three models. Your report should
include an introduction, a methods section, a results section, a conclusion and an appendix
containing all relevant Minitab output. You will be marked on both the content and the
presentation of your report.
Report 2 (40 marks)
A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of two drugs for the treatment of cocaine
addiction. The 195 subjects in the study were all cocaine addicts who were seeking treatment.
Each of the subjects were randomly allocated into one of three groups. The first group were given
Drug A, the second group were given Drug B and the third group were given a placebo. All
subjects recorded some withdrawal symptoms. After six weeks of treatment, researchers
recorded whether or not each subject had relapsed. The Minitab file, CocaineTreatment.mtw,
which is on iLearn consists of information recorded on the following variables for each subject in
the study.
Variable

Description

ID

Subject identification number

Treatment

1 = Drug A, 2 = Drug B, 3 = Placebo

Withdrawal

1 = Physiological withdrawal symptoms only,

2 = Psychological withdrawal symptoms only,
3 = Both physiological and psychological withdrawal symptoms

Relapse

0 = Subject did not relapse, 1 = Subject did relapse

a. Use the Minitab file, CocaineTreatment.mtw, to carry out appropriate analyses to

address the following questions:
i.

Does the relapse rate differ among the three treatments?

ii.

Do 50% of cocaine addicts who seek treatment to quit suffer both physiological and
psychological withdrawal symptoms with the remainder equally likely to suffer
either physiological withdrawal symptoms or psychological withdrawal symptoms?

iii.

Do the results for part ii. differ if we only consider those who relapse?

b. Write up a statistical report on your analyses (ie. one report that addresses all three
questions. Again, your report should include an introduction, a methods section, a results
section, a conclusion and an appendix containing all relevant Minitab output. You will be
marked on both the content and the presentation of your report.
