Fig. Many physical, chemical and biological factors disturb mitochondrial respiratory chain and increase the production of reactive oxygen
species beyond the level of antioxidant system. This establishes oxidative stress (OS) in the male reproductive system. mtDNA close to
electron transport (ET) chain gets damaged by ROS and undergoes mutation, which results in the formation of defective ET chain. The altered
ET chain further increases the production of ROS and also impairs the spermatogenesis and sperm function leading to male infertility.
