Senior Recognition
It is already that time of year! We are looking
for our 2016 graduates to recognize on Sunday,
May 22nd. Please give the name(s) of our
Seniors to the church office (903-873-2569)by
Sunday, May 15th. Thank you in advance. We
can not wait to celebrate their
accomplishments!
Food Drive
We are sponsoring the
Middle School back pack
program once again. This vital
program sends backpacks
filled with food home each
weekend with students in
need. Items should be easily
opened and consumed by a child (nothing
requiring a can opener). Small containers and
single-servings are helpful, as well. I was hungry, and you gave me food. (Matthew 25:35)

(cont. from pg. 1) Here is the explanation. While the score is factual, it is misleading to call
it my score. The more honest statement would be to say that it was our score. The round of golf
was not a normal individual round. I was playing on a team entered in the annual Rotary All Fore
Kids tournament. (Speaking of which, thank you to all who participated. The money raised will go
directly toward grants to support education in our local schools.) The tournament was done in a
scramble format. Each player hits his/her tee shot. The team determines which is the best shot,
then all players on the team hit their next shot from that location. Play continues in the same
manner with each shot and through the entire round.
One of the benefits of playing a scramble is that players of different skill levels can more enjoyably
play together, and at the same time produce scores that are markedly better than any one of them
would otherwise. Throughout the round, every player is encouraged to hit the ball, and inevitably
every player will have contributed to the teams success. It makes for a pleasurable round of golf,
and it provides a great image for life in the church. Every person is encouraged to participate, and
every person will have contributed to the success of the whole.
Scramble Church may not be the perfect image. Nearly any analogy falls short in some way. Still,
it is a better image than what may be reality in church life. Too often we operate from the 80/20
rule. I have heard this rule stated and applied in various ways, one of which is that 80 percent of
the work is done by 20 percent of the people. I can promise you that in playing the round of golf,
my shots were used quite infrequently compared to those of my more skilled teammates.
Nevertheless, I was encouraged to hit the ball every time. My participation mattered, and I was
glad to offer it. The 80/20 effect in the church is sometimes because too many people are unwilling
or are not encouraged to participate. Scramble Church says that everyones participation is
important, and the team will consequently have greater success.
There are many opportunities for us to step up and take a swing in church life. Believing that you
dont have something to offer, that someone else can do it better than you, or that it is someone
elses job will lessen our effectiveness. Lets employ a scramble mentality in our work. Step up,
take a swing, see what happens. You might be the one who scores the hole-in-one for the
Kingdom!
